No incoming message sound when locked - iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hi All...

I've been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it. I have a new iPhone 6 plus. When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound. I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn't matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in. The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked. I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value.

Is this an iOS 8 bug? I've rebooted several times and I've done a soft reset.

Please help! 🙂

3 STEPS TO HOPEFULLY RECOVER SOUND ON YOUR IPHONE FOR INCOMING TEXTS/CALLS/ALERTS.

  1. Check that the ringer on the left of the phone doesn’t show an orange line – indicating sound switched off. If so, slide it to the right so only white is showing. This may have fixed it.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal symbols, music etc. Ensure that the half moon symbol is grey and not white. If it’s white touch it to make it grey – this will switch off do not disturb. This may have fixed it.
  3. Check your settings, Do not Disturb half moon icon, ensure that Manual is off and not showing a green on icon. If it is, touch the green icon which will make it white and switch it off. This may have fixed it.

(I hope that helps, it worked for my iphone 5C as I’d inadvertently switched on Do Not disturb as shown in step 2. above.)

I just got a new iPhone 6 and set it up. The settings above (jenhebert & cldm000) are exactly the same. Yet I still do not get a sound or alert when the phone is asleep/locked. Looking at the settings in the graphics - SILENCE: Only When iPhone is locked, is checked. You cannot deselect this, with out selecting Always.

This must be a feature (admittedly a poor feature).

I did the Settings>Reset per the Tech support request. (after verifying all the settings were "correct")

And after the reset, the iPhone would "ring" when asleep.

However, after enabling Passcode / Touch ID feature, no "ring" while locked

I can enable/disable the Passcode / Touch ID at will and it will (not) ring / ring.

That seems to be the issue.

OK - after trying a few more things I found that even with the Passcode / Touch ID enabled, I can get the iPhone to alert while locked, only if the Allow Notifications is set to Everyone. Not Favorites, even if the #s calling are in my Favorites.

Pretty strange set of settings.

Passcode /Touch ID enabled :

Will alert if Notifications>Allow Calls is set to Everyone; Will not Alert if set to Favorites( even if receiving call from a Favorite)

Passcode /Touch ID disabled:

Will alert if Notifications>Allow Calls is set to Everyone or Favorites (if receiving call from a Favorite)

Actually that probably wont work, turned out the problem was using icloud I had restored my contacts from an old iphone onto a new one that didn't have the text tone set for a specific contact. So when I did the notification reset I had some one text me and it appeared to be working. Later I received a text from the specific contact that had a different text tone set from the old iphone and there was no sound. Turns out I had to edit that specific contact and change the text tone to one the new phone has.

I have been having this problem with my iPhone 6 as well. Resting always seemed to solve the problem, but was tired of having to do that.

Today I noticed that I did not hear a sound when I received an email on my iPhone, but it did on my iPad. The problem seemed to be that my Bluetooth was connected to my Sony sound bar, but the sound bar was on TV and not Bluetooth for my phone. Once I disconnected from the sound bar my sound came back on my phone. This seems to be a weird glitch. Hopefully they will have a fix, but at least I now know to watch that I am not connected to another Bluetooth device.

i made a account just for this site. what fixed the problem for me was my phone relied on volume instead of ringer tone volume. go to any video app and turn the volume up all the way. its a crappy bug in apple's programming. the phone is using video volume as a text tone. it was like this for 2 days until i messed with the audio volume. it is definitely apples fault.
(do not disturb) wasnt on, it still vibrated too when text tones wouldnt sound.
