I've always instructed our clients to NOT use one type of backup. I know that Timemachine can and does fail for instance - I've seen that many times. However, I only serve as a consultant for the iThings (iPad/iPhone) - those are generally not under my control in the business networks. So many of them are bring your own device type environments, so unless they need help getting it to recognize their server, or loading an oddball app and configuring it, or even repairing a broken display, we don't even touch them. We send out emails and have documents we distribute which give best practices, but do the end users see them? I doubt it.
The three people who I encountered last week with lost documents had all backed up prior to the update, multiple times. But had simply used the cloud backup and the iTunes backup on their computers. They did not utilize a 3rd party app. Nor did I.
All my emails are on my Exchange server, I can't lose those, short of a disaster that affects 1000 miles from here 8-)... The apps, I can redownload and reconfigure. Photos are mostly all on Dropbox/Copy as well as the iPad, which means they are on 3 desktops I use, and those desktops are imaged to our NAS and remote backups and redundant servers. Leaving my notes... That's the only thing I didn't have some form of multiple backup of...
I'm not going to cry over them.
