IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgrade

After IOS 8 upgrade many aplications ( Safari, Facebook, etc) load very, very slow (comparing with 7 version) , with a significant delay of more than 10 seconds...

Who can I solve this problem? Any workaround?

PD

Apple should better test the software before delivering.

Thanks.

John, thanks for the update. I suppose I am lucky I am a casual user of my i pad and as I don't need mine for work I did not see or I did not have the real bad issues that a lot of us on here did. I can report that 8.1.1 is better but not as good as 7. Still have some copy and paste issues. I have advised my partner and daughter not to "upgrade" from 7 and we can see sat side by side that their 2's work better than mine. My only problem is when they eventually need a factory reset they will get what ever IOS is out at that time and then..........Who knows?

Anyway I'm out of here before anyone tells me it wasn't real and just some bad dream.

No, they will not get the latest iOS unless you ask iTunes to install it. They can backup and reset their iPads and iPhones to whatever iOS they are currently running.

Why do I care? I do want people to understand that 8.0.0-8.1 iOS releases had major flaws that affected nearly every single one of our business users, enough for them to open tickets with us. Enough for them to spend hours on the phone, and at the Apple store. Enough for them to replace their tablets.

But I also want people to know that with the release of 8.1.1, these same people (the ones who did not ditch their tablet) are somewhat happier and back to doing some work.

It's important to note that not a single person. Not. One. Single. Person.... Has said "This is so much better than 7x". Nobody has said it was faster, offered important improvements that help them do their work, or that it fixed anything that was not working for them.you

So, if you are reading this, and you use your iPad 2/3/mini in a business environment, it is my personal recommendation that you do not update to 8x from 7x.... Your mileage may vary...

My brief update as well. As previously mentioned, I planned to update from 8.1 to 8.1.1 on my iPad 2 and test. I'm happy to report this update has indeed helped. I would say it's about 80-85% as good as 7.x was. Given that; I'm going to leave my wife's iPad 2 at 7.x; there's not sufficient benefit to upgrade. And I anticipate that even if I were to update it I would still need to do the factory reset; etc. for cleaner performance. As John states, if you're reading this and for some reason you are still at 7.x; it's my strong recommendation to just stay there. If you've upgraded to 8.1.1 and still have significant performance issues I would follow the posted procedures on backing everything up and doing a factory reset. That was the most significant improvement that helped me.

Cheers,

Jerry

Dead-on, Mr. Hoyt.

Amazing how much trouble we had to go through only to end up with 75% of the performance we had in the first place, with 7.x.

Hopefully the next update will address iPad 2 performance because as of 11-27-2014 it is a deal-breaker. My recommendation is NOT upgrading from ios7 at this time.

Updated my iPad 2 last week after reading the fixes specific to iPod 2 performance listed in 8.1.1 update. Overall, there is a very noticeable reduction in performance. Safari is "choppy", pages load much slower as compared to ios7. The same can be said for the main page with app icons. The night of update the battery was depleted from 65% and has to be charged every three days since the update; it would go for 10+ days prior to update, typically used 1 hour per day.

Heres an update from my previous post:

I have managed to get fast internet back on my ipad2 after the iOS 8.1.1 update. Some of you in this discussion had already seen a fast internet experience after 8.1.1 but i hadn't. The internet was very bad/unuseable/non existent. So if you are having the same issue hopefully this may help you.

* I reset my iPad (General>Reset>Erase all content and settings). It was still 8.1.1 but deleted everything else. (i backed up pictures/videos and did a backup to iTunes first of course). That didn't help!

* I reset my network settings (General>Reset>Reset network settings.) That didn't help!

* I noticed that the iPad2 was doing everything else quickly, like opening apps, switching between apps, etc, it was just safari that was not opening webpages. I began to think maybe it was the wifi or the router rather than the iPad. I have a dual frequency router (2.4GHz & 5GHz) with the same SSID (wireless network name), so you don't actually know which frequency the iPad is connected to, it could be 2.4 or 5 GHz. I went into the router and gave the 2.4Ghz a new SSID, the iPad automatically connected to the 5GHz wireless network but when opening safari it would not load a webpage. That didn't help!

* I connected the iPad to the 2.4 GHz and hey presto it worked and opened a webpage very quickly. After opening a few more webpages it seemed to be fine. Its now been a few days and its still working fine viewing the web, streaming youtube and tv programmes. That did help!

* I connected back to the 5GHz wireless and it couldn't load a single webpage again. Is the iPad2 5GHz enabled? I read in another post it is.

* Of course you need to bare in mind that this has wiped the ipad2 and as yet i haven't added apps, emails, etc or done a restore from iTunes of the backup.

My ipad2 was unuseable before this so I hope it helps you get back on the net. Good luck!

Presume you mean go to page 1 and answer first post. Ok, that seemed a little odd to go way back there but ok thanks for your help.

Unfortunately that is not what most posters do and the thread ends up as an unhelpful mess of opinions, off-topic rants and bickering. Starting your own thread drawers more helpful responses to your specific issues and they do not tend to get lost amongst all the squabbling some folks like to do o these forums. Hopefully then your issues can be addressed properly.

thanks. i wanted to continue in this thread to continue the conversation, and not the ranting! Its not obvious to me that you have to go all the way back to the original posting, but hey I’m not a regular in forums as you can probably tell. After some googling on this problem i ended up here. Thanks for your help and assistance Pete.

To be fair, they aren't actually requiring you to update. All system apps are maintained as legacy software because Apple recognizes that so many owners of this obsolete model still need it to function. Sure you can't get the big, fancy, full-screen Instagram; boo-hoo I can't download Delectable and catalog my wine bottles, but my load times are down, my screen transitions are smooth, and it gets the job done.

It's unfortunate to see that nobody read any reviews beforehand or if they did, just installed the update anyway.

As you'll notice below, I tend to skip most OS releases

I sent out a warning, in email, and posted it on my blog which is read by thousands of people and hundreds of our clients... "DO NOT UPGRADE"....

They did it anyway.... My business was swamped with phone calls and tickets that were started asking us for help.

There was one case of a business owner who said that they saw my email and my blog post but upgraded because Apple offered it and it had to be better.

We had hundreds of calls and tickets.

We were down to 22 tickets of over 400 on December 1st, when I closed them all out.

I have been a long term Apple user. Macs, laptops, IPhones, IPods, Apple TV and so on. For the first time since I started spending my money on Apple, I have decided to STOP using an Apple product, because the performance level has dropped significantly, and I experience many of the complaints above, on various devices. Basically, at home, I use the Internet as many do, for work. Until about three weeks ago, I used Safari. Previously, I had 20 Gb broadband and wireless, but after various upgrades, Safari on all devices seemed to be getting slower and slower. The Pad, which had a significant amount of use, was the worst. It would often crash, or simply stop and require a reboot. Tolerance levels reached an all time low, so I have decided to replace safari on the Mac with Mozilla Firefox. Problem solved. On the IPad, there I s no version of Mozilla Firefox for IOS yet, so currently I am trying out different browsers, and performance is better. Currently I am using Mercury, but if Mozilla release a version of Firefox for IOS then I will move to that. Apple need to smell the coffee, and realise their products are starting to lose the position they previously held, as those of first choice.

BTW, I even upgraded to 50Gb fibre optic broadband, but due to safari problems saw no improvement. Now with Firefox, I am finally benefitting from the broadband speeds. Sorry Apple, but it appears since the sad demise of Steve Jobs, some of your products have become third rate, which they never were before.

AAnd this is why I am no longer replacing my apple devices with new Apple devices. I should not have to research an upgrade, and I use that term loosely, to see if it will kill my device. I was a loyalist briefly before I got tired of closed systems, no way to upgrade desktops to my liking, and update shenanigans. I replaced my iPhone with an S5 this time around and it's been a dream. I replaced my Mac with a home built PC that blows any Mac out of the water for the same price and I can customize to my hearts content. People are buying a trendy brand in Apple. That trend is over for me.

this is ridiculous but it worked for me and I found it in the forum (many many pages back) , but did not bookmark it so I'm going from memory now...

close all apps

open safari

open multiple tabs, at least 6, with different websites on each

pinch the screen to change the into a table format

select on of the web windows to restore it to full screen

perform a hard boot (home key plus power button)

seriously..that was it. no more hanging with safari or Facebook. I think it is still slightly slower than it used to be (pre upgrade), but VERY useable now, barely noticeable

good luck
