Why does Siri bluetooth connection in 2008 Toyota Prius with iOS 8 terminate outgoing call with message "call terminated by network" on Prius screen

Since installing iOS 8 , we can't get Siri to make outgoing calls with the Prius Bluetooth. Incoming calls work, but we get a message on the Prius screen, "call terminated by network" whenever we tell Siri to call out. She will recognize who we're calling, but as soon as the dialing starts, we get the call terminated message.

Any similar experience or ideas?

Just to re-iterate this for people new to the thread. The people being affected here can make calls WITHOUT Siri over Bluetooth by selecting a number from the iPhone screen. In contrast, when you talk to Siri and say "call Diana" the call will fail.

This seems to happen on nearly all Toyota / Lexus vehicles made from 2006 to 2010 with the factory Bluetooth system. It began when iOS 8 came out in September, and is evidenced by the fact that thepeople still on iOS 7(regardless of what model iPhone they have) can verify Siri calling works.

Has nothing to do with JBL. This is a BT issue and the problem lies with Apple. It all worked fine before 8. BT is backwards compatible regarding industry wide BT. Apple plucked things up with the 8 upgrade and will be liable soon for any accidents or deaths caused by this. The aggressive attorneys are awaiting a feeding frenzy. It's Apple! They suck at times!

Good luck with that lol...

Shouldn't be on the phone in your car. No one is responsible for that but you

Hi All, I too have this problem and like others, not in a Toyota (I understand this thread is about Toyotas but I wanted to reiterate that you guys are not alone in this poor situation). I have concluded in this thread and many others, that Apple are getting to be as bad as "that other" software supplier! After all this time, all these complaints and multiple updates (I have in 8.1.3) and Apple just don't seem to be able to provide a decent voice-activated phone connection (anymore)!

Boy do I miss Steve Jobs and his customer-driven focus!

Apple may fix this one day (we all hope) but in the meantime, Androids steal huge market from Apple.

Understood, Andrew, and that is exactly the problem I am experiencing. ONLY an issue when asking Siri to dial. As I only just figured out that I could do that, it's not a huge change in the way I function in the car, but I did appreciate the relative safety of that method and am disappointed that it is so soon lost with my 'upgrade.'

That said, I did contact Toyota and learned the following:

  • The Siri voice dialing function is not supported by Toyota; it was unstable in original testing on various iPhones, therefore not officially supported by the car maker.
  • (Obviously) different model/year cars have different versions of Toyota BT software. So while iOS 8.2 may work in in the '09 Lexus, it doesn't work in my '06 Sienna. Will have to test in my '10 Sienna to see if there is a difference.
  • The rep I spoke to didn't want to be quoted, but she did say that she thinks Toyota *might* be working with Apple to rectify this.
  • Toyota recommends importing your address book to the navi system and using THAT voice dialing function (which in my experience, doesn't work...voice recognition is terrible).

Another tale of success this morning with a 2008 Toyota Prius! After updating to 8.2, we can now use SIri with the Prius's Bluetooth system just as we did with iOS 7. Looks like Apple sneaked in a fix.

If you're still having issues with a Prius after updating to 8.2, I'd suggest trying some of the standard troubleshooting techniques mentioned in this and other threads. If there there are multiple issues with the phone/Prius, then the 8.2 update might only remove one of them, and then you'd have to resolve one or more others before getting it to work.

The most basic troubleshooting technique is to delete the phone from the car and the car from the phone, reboot the phone, then try re-pairing.
