iPad Air since iOS 8: Apps not updating and downloading no longer possible. Fix?

This problem only really started in the past couple days. I can no longer update apps, cannot download books from the store in the books app and cannot download newspapers in my newsstand. Also, my Adobe reader for iPad open but shows a blank page for 15 seconds before closing and returning to my iPad home screen.

Previous to this, the first few days of iOS 8 did not give me problems, though I had not yet tested all of the above items but apps updated easily for first few days (until 22 sept). Is there a fix?

(A) Try reset iPad

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Note: Data will not be affected.

(B) Try reset all settings

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings

Note: Data will not be affected but settings for Wi-Fi, FaceTime, Message, Home Sharing will be reset

Since I started this thread yesterday let me provide an update since I see all the activity rolling in on this. There is for sure a problem with iOS8,8.01 and now 8.02. I have fixed my issue on the iPhone 6 but still exist on my iPad and on iPhone 6+. Hopeful that Apple is seeing some of this activity. I posted feedback on Apple.com/support as well as sent tweets to @Apple. Keep up posting the issues only way it will get fixed.

So, I deleted all of my programs except one. The Wall Street Journal was actually still, more or less, working. It was downloading content, but not ads (that's a feature not a bug). I figured that if it was anything, it would be in the 30 apps I already deleted. And I really hated to get rid of one that actually worked.

Finally, I said, screw it, and deleted it.

Then I rebooted.

Started downloading and they all came back nice as you please.

So far so good. I'll let you know if it stops working again.

It may be that there is more than one bug in play here.

My browsers are working again too. They had both become flaky (iCabMobile and Safari).

I have updated to iOS 8.0.2 - where to start with the problems on an iPad 4? I can't update apps, I can't sync apps, I can't keep the internet connection, I can't open some apps, and I haven't tried very much yet!!

I've turned off iCloud I've restarted the iPad - all the obvious stuff but the fact is that this is a software problem from apple and not my iPad or me. I hope that apple sort this out very fast - I have too much stuff on my iPad to do a factory reset - and why should I? Its their mistake - they should fix it (besides which I'm going away with work tomorrow and I can't spend all night resetting an iPad)

Come on apple.............

I have nothing to do with Apple, but I do work with a software development team.

It's hard to know how long this will take, but I can make some educated guesses. There are these problems:

  1. We have no idea if the development teams even have this bug on their bug lists yet. There may be quite a lot of them on that list already.
  2. Even if our bug is on the list, it may not be a high enough priority yet. This might be because other bugs affect more people or are viewed as more severe.
  3. There is little chance anything will happen on the weekend. iOS 8.0.2 is not generally viewed as a disaster, so they probably let everybody go home.
  4. If the bug fix requires another software release, Apple will gather up a number of issues and make one release to cover them all. This gives them more time to test and should reduce (but not eliminate) the chances of a bad release.

My guess is that unless we come up with a general solution ourselves, Apple will not fix this for at least a week.

In the meantime, there seem to be two "solutions" that have worked for at least some of us. The first is to delete all of the apps waiting to be updated:

  1. Go to the App store app and make a list of all the apps waiting for an update. I did this by using my iPhone camera.
  2. Then delete all of the apps on this list. You do that by touching and pressing on any app until they all start wiggling. Then each app will have an "x" in the upper left corner. Touch the "x" to delete an app.
  3. Touch the home button at the bottom of the screen to get out of this mode.
  4. Then reboot.
  5. Go back to the App Store app and at the bottom, touch "Purchased". The apps you have already bought, but that can be downloaded, show the little cloud icon with the down arrow. Touch the icon to re-download the app.

This has worked for a number of people myself included (at least so far).

The more drastic solution is to reset to factory conditions. In this case you'll lose all apps, photos, songs, accounts, and customization of any kind. It may be that you can back all this up to iTunes and restore it all once your iPad is working again, but I haven't tried this, so don't know. It would be helpful if one of the people that has done this could provide step by step instructions.

I had this problem with two iPhones and an iPad. All three were fixed by doing the following:

  • Connect to iTunes.
  • Click on the device in the sidebar, then click on the Apps tab.
  • Below the Apps window, there is a box to check to automatically download new apps. Check that box.
  • Click 'Apply' the click 'Sync'
  • Uncheck the box you checked two steps above.
  • Repeat 'Apply' and 'Sync'

All three devices went back to normal app updating after this.

Well, that would have been easier!
