iPad Air since iOS 8: Apps not updating and downloading no longer possible. Fix?

This problem only really started in the past couple days. I can no longer update apps, cannot download books from the store in the books app and cannot download newspapers in my newsstand. Also, my Adobe reader for iPad open but shows a blank page for 15 seconds before closing and returning to my iPad home screen.

Previous to this, the first few days of iOS 8 did not give me problems, though I had not yet tested all of the above items but apps updated easily for first few days (until 22 sept). Is there a fix?

(A) Try reset iPad

Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

Note: Data will not be affected.

(B) Try reset all settings

Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings

Note: Data will not be affected but settings for Wi-Fi, FaceTime, Message, Home Sharing will be reset

I am the originator of this thread and I see many people talking about resets and various other measures as well as this very helpful post from someone who knows about the workings of Apple.

I Mentioned earlier that I did find a solution that worked.:

I downgraded to 7.1.2 and reinstalled all my apps.

result: everything works perfectly!!!!

it may not be ideal but with this, all is working normally, speedy and everything updates and my purchases all download without any problems whatsoever. I did this change Thursday night and since then, I have not had a single problem.

if the downgrade option is still available, I recommend it to all having this type of problem on their iPads.

good luck and let's hope Apple is paying attention and addresses these issues quickly. So far, they have not even acknowledged these issues and no press member has yet written about it.

Apple has decided that iOS 8 is good enough to move forward with and has disabled downgrading this weekend, I have wiped and restored twice now, and I always, eventually end up total hung. As others have mentioned, you can reset your way out of the issue some of the time temporarily, but you end up back hung. You can see the problem quickly by doing a massive (500+ songs) iTunes match update. I did this twice and was able to get everything hung. When the update stops, you can see in the iTunes store, some songs hung waiting (even though they have been downloaded, for some reason the sync all on my 500 song play list queues 700+ downloads). You can then delete the waiting songs, reboot the device, then depending on the luck of the draw it may still work. It appears to get slower after this on subsequent downloads. My guess is there is some leak in the download manager that is sticky (as many things are on tablets).

Bottom line, for me anyway, it this is broken and I have nothing to do but wait for a fix. In the mean time, I will be downloading no content from Apple and asking for a refund for subscriptions I can not access.

Sadly, I gather the downgrade window has passed: apple are not signing 7.1.2 any more. You can't go back. when I suggested this a few days back (25th) I did say you should do it ASAP before they closed the window...

That being said, I'm really glad it worked, jdfrms! Good on you. Apple did a late ios7 update for iphone4 when it had similar levels of trouble: it may be the case that the iPad 2 gets a "slimmed down" version of iOS 8 to help cope with the problem the new OS appears to have running on a memory-constrained platform.

I have had the same issue as you since about September 24.

I reset the iPad, (not a full reset, not willing to do that yet) and reset network settings. I tried to update from iTunes and that has also failed. I was able to update to iOS8.0.2 from iTunes, since I was also unable to update over the air with the iPad.

I have 9 updates waiting for a solution by Apple.

I know all iOS upgrades have issues, it just seems like this one is sloppier than the others.

Ipad Air and 8.02 - first noticed that Zinio magazines wouldn't load. Then the Zinio app wouldn't load - just hung up with a circle I've never seen before. I deleted the app and tried downloading through WIFI. Wouldn't work. Restored Ipad and reloaded the Zinio app hardwired to Itunes - App "loaded", but will not open. Now no app updates will load, just get a circle with the box in the middle. No new apps will load. Wifi slower than before. Some apps work fine, some start then stop. I've tried restoring a number of times. I've done resets a number of times. I've signed off of my Apple Store account a number of times. I guess we need to wait for another release? I bought an Iphone 6, had the issues with 8.01, but those seem to fixed with the 8.02. Frustrating at best.

I've had the same problem on an iPad mini Retina. I first observed it while running 8.0, and the 8.0.2 update made no difference.

I've just now noticed the same problem for the first time on an iPhone 6, which is also running 8.0.2. I guess I'll jump through the hoops, either at the Genius Bar or on the phone. It's frustrating enough, but I'm preemptively more frustrated because I know they'll want me to wipe the device and start over.

I'll try deleting all the hung apps and reinstalling, but there's no reason to believe that, or a factory reset, will be a long term cure, from what I've read here.

Same situation Exactly. Except I am on an iPad Air. First noticed the problem on September 23rd with Zinio and the strange spinning circle.after deleting Zinio no Apps have updated. A full week now. This was caused by Ios 8 not 8.0.2.

This is the company that says everything just works and not even acknowledging what is clearly a huge problem. Very disappointed Apple.

Thanks for trying to get this some attention. I should just go to the Genius bar.

For others considering a complete wipe and restore, don't. It most likely won't fix this problem. I have done two such resets, and the problem returns. I have signed into different iCloud and iTunes accounts, turned on an off automatic downloads, looked for stray downloads, deleted apps left and right, and prayed to pagan gods, but nothing fixes the issue. I have set it up as a new iPad twice to no avail. My iPhone, on the same wifi network works fine. Just the iPad 4th gen. So, there is nothing wrong with the network. The issue is that something in iOS 8 borked my iPad's ability to update or download apps.

In fact, I have 5 iPhones and an iPad in my household. All on various versions of iOS 8, and only my iPad 4th generation is experiencing this issue.
