Touch Screen unresponsive after iOS 8 update

My 1 year old 64GB iPhone 5 touch screen started to become unresponsive after iOS 8 update

It's not consistent. Touch screen functionality will seize whilst phone is being used for either answering calls, typing messges, surfing, gaming etc and won't become responsive until it is turned off and on again (via power button). Home button is functioning with no problems.

As the phone is now out of its warranty period I want to verify if it's the OS that's causing this or do I actually have a hardware issue.

Also having the same trouble with an iPhone 5c newly purchased just after the new iOS came out and immediately set up with iOS8. Although the touch screen is inconsistently unresponsive, the real trouble comes with using the text in Messages. Turning off the predictive text was essential for it to work at all initially, but it regularly goes off the rails while I'm trying to type in landscape mode, simply adding in new letters, spaces, symbols, jumping ahead or going backwards regardless of what I'm trying to type. It has been much worse today for some reason (hence looking for this post). I tried resetting the settings, but that only sent it back to the original terrible-ness and didn't fix the basic problem. I'm reluctant to go back to factory settings, as that's how I got it in the first place.

Given that messaging is probably the service I use the most, not having control of the keyboard is most irritating.

Yeah, what the ****... I also love how every time they have a new update that ***** itself, undoubtedly the solution is to take a bunch of time and effort to back up your phone (takes me a while cuz I have a ton of stuff on it), and reset it and set up as new, blah blah blah. And then even THAT doesn't work half the time, or only works temporarily. Apple has more cash at their disposal than the federal government. So tell me, why is it that they continue to hire the D+ software engineers? Pardon my French and all, but ****, I've had iPhones since 2008, and without FAIL, every time a major hardware/software update takes place, there are a million issues that are just inconvenient and seemingly unnecessary with the proper testing and installation. Does anyone know if other phone brands and their software updates go through the same thing? Cuz if so, I sure as **** don't hear about it nearly as much as I do about Apple's annual disaster.

At last, I thought it was only me suffering from an unresponsive touchscreen after updating to ios8.

I First noticed an issue when using the App Store app and trying for ages to open the rest of the text in the detail section of apps by pressing the 'more' link, nothing was happening.

I Realised that in order to get this link to activate I had to touch somewhere slightly above and to the left of the actual text.

I Have also noticed a slight pause when opening apps that need vertical scrolling, such as My Fitness Pal. It seems that it takes a couple of seconds after the app is opened before I can scroll up or down.

I Have also noticed that the Music & Podcast apps are sometimes frozen when opened, displaying that they are playing but actually are not playing & no matter how many times I try to hit the Play/Pause button nothing happens. I have to close the app and reopen to resolve.

SOmething else else I have noticed since ios8 is the almost totally useless Today screen on Notifications.

For one, most app widgets seem to work OK for a day or two but then stop updating i.e. News apps should always show latest headlines etc.... only removing these apps from the Today screen and then adding them back sparks them to life again.

I use a lot of reminders and these also show on the Today screen and since ios8 it is a nightmare when trying to click on a composted reminder here. Prior to ios8 it was easy, I clicked, the circle filled with a red dot and disappeared from the Today screen. Now because of responsive issues I press the circle like crazy and it keeps opening up the reminder app instead.

It would seem like the screen calibration is ever so slightly off.

Typing this post on my iPhone 5 has been almost painful as it keeps randomly inserting uppercase characters, especially capital 'A' & also occasionally deleting the last letter of word when double pressing the space bar for a full stop.

Come on Apple, pull your **** finger out & get this sorted.

Not a happy customer but a potentially future ANDROID one.

I concur on the OTHER issues you mentioned about the update as well. I've mostly held my tongue on the other issues, because I never updated to any iOS 7 v version and kept the last version of iOS 6 until a few weeks ago when I just went straight to 8.0.2 or whatever it is. I'm sure that Safari isn't as different from 7 to 8 as it was from 6 to 7, but going from 6 to 8, I am definitely not happy about what they've done. I get making it easier to deal with only one browser bar, but for one, unless you have the iPhone 6 or 6+, it's too small a space on the 4s. And because now that bar does 2 functions, it's just..., and ***, when you open a page in the background, it doesn't automatically go there you have to go through a new and entirely pointless hoop which... aren't we supposed to be getting IMPROVEMENTS through new software updates? I am completely baffled by the idiots in charge of updates. It's as if Apple is trying to out-**** YouTube's mobile app with it's updates.

I am experiencing the exact issue. My son plays Clash of Clans on my iPhone 5 and he screamed at it this morning. "I hate the iOS update!!!"

The screen goes unresponsive. Closing the app and resetting to home usually solves the problem, but when playing a game this is particularly frustrating.

Breaking AirPrint to printers that worked under iOS 6 and 7 (and are still under Apples list as verified) , and $1200.00 pioneer receivers AV control app that freeze crashes, now that's the kind of thing that makes me just angry.

I Also faces same issue on my iPhone 5 after upgrading to iOS 8 (screen rotation, touch issues and app crashing). I believe Apple is charging premium price for stuff that should work... After iOS 8 my crush on Apple devices is overs. Already sold my iPad Air and mini. Next is iphone.....I can better device on half of the price....

i Think apple introduced these issues intentionally so people will give up and buy new devices....

good bye apple...

Just adding that I'm experiencing the same issues.

iPhone 5 - 64GB with iOS8.0.2 installed.

At first I thought it may have been a space issue, but I have 11 Gig space on the device which should be plenty.

The first time I noticed was I was listening to music and a phone call came through, and the phone crashed (all music stopped, phone stopped ringing, and the apple logo appeared)

Since then, the touch screen has been really unresponsive, pop-ups in apps such as sharing functions are incredibly slow, and even shutting down apps becomes tediously slow.

It is definitely the update causing this problem. If I use voice commands on my iPhone 5c and iPAd mini everything is fine. However if I try a use the touch screen, they freeze up within seconds. I went to the Apple Store and they told me I just needed to delete some apps to make space. Rubbish! I have 75% of my memory free on my iPad.

They don't have a clue. I'll never buy another Apple product. I'm going to try a Windows tablet next time.

By the way, if you think we have it bad think again. I know a blind person who uses the accessibility feature. Since the upgrade their phone has crashed permanently and Apple don't want to know as it's out of warranty!!!!!

Ahhh yes, I see that you have also been to the "genius" bar with an issue, only to be told by some smug teenager that it must be a user error of some sort... I bet this **** doesn't happen to people who buy new phones once a year. There's no way that Apple is the kind of company that has to just live with glitches or bad software engineers. I highly doubt it's random, either. I've had an iphone since 2008, but if they don't get their **** together with this update soon, my contract is up in January. I don't want to WANT to change and learn some new platform... I don't take advantage of all the bells and whistles, and am comfortable using what I know. But I'm seriously sick of this ****. The last 3 software updates have all had glitches that affected my phone, and each one is more vexing than the last. And then you talk to their people, and you get nowhere with these teenage hipsters that are trained that there is no faulty Apple product, only faulty customers. Then you go online for some advice, and they have the ******* gaul to CHARGE YOU almost 20 ******* dollars to fix a problem THAT IS THEIR ******* FAULT TO BEGIN WITH. It's so **** frustrating. It's no wonder that Apple has more money than Uncle ******* Sam. .
