ios 8 Push Email Delays

Since ios 8 release (including on 8.0.2), a number of users within our organization have noticed delays in Push email being delivered to the mail application for activesync (exchange) mail connections.

This hasn't ever been noticed on ios 7, but consistently since 8.0 and 8.0.2 were released.

Anyone else seeing this issue? I have verified it is still setup as PUSH for that profile. We use Maas360 as an MDM tool also but changes there.

I know that you are just users, so I honestly thank you for your time. I also know that serious companies monitor their official forums for complaints.

So I am using google apps for business and I set the exchange mail up appropriately. It was working perfectly from the day that I got the 6plus (launch date), till late December. After that push stops working for no reason and in a non predictable manner. For example it was working properly for the whole last week (until Friday), however today I pressed the mail app button and suddenly 30 new emails showed up all sent during the weekend (2 days delay!). Now it is working like a charm again, I tested multiple times, I get the emails instantly, without changing anything.

But I cannot rely on my phone anymore for the emails. I don't know if it's the day that push is in mood of working or not. We have some more cases of iPhone6 behaving the same way, the rest of the people that I know (e.g. android users) are not affected. This is why they have to address this issue as soon as possible.

I just verified today. The gmail client on my iPhone, outlook on my pc and windows 8 mail apps got 4 emails today. Iphone mail app got zero! Actually when I opened the app at 8pm and it was showing at the top : last updated today at 1:42 am.

so the problem is iphone mail app specific since all of the other apps in iPhone and other devices got the mails on time.

What are your exact iOS settings for fetch? There is an overall fetch schedule (15 min, 30 min, hourly, manual) as well as a Gmail-specific fetch setting (Fetch or Manual). If either setting is Manual then that's why you didn't see the new email until you opened the iOS Mail app.

I explained already that the nature of this issue is intermittent. That means that even when I don't change the settings it works normally, but at random.times it just forgets completely to push or fetch for hours or even days. So when I open the mail app I get flooded by mails that I should have received much much earlier. I gave up I just made outlook my default mail client. I cannot play with my work waiting for Apple to fix it.

This exact issue has been a major disruption in our enterprise since October 2014. I have been working directly with Microsoft Premier support services to further troubleshoot the issue. Basically - to reiterate what has already been stated in these posts: Our enterprise iPhone users stop receiving exchange e-mail until a manual step is taken - sometimes manually refreshing in the native e-mail app, sometimes a reboot of the iPhone, sometimes the mail app itself has to be killed and restarted, then after the manual step is taken all of the e-mail gets delivered at once
(sometimes days old). We are using iPhones for our on-call services and they have shared mail accounts on them that are also experiencing the e-mail delay/ non-delivery issue. I am now no less than 100 hours into working on this including setting up a lab with several iPhones with EAS (Exchange ActiveSync logging), and the data traffic routing via Wi-Fi through a pc running Fiddler. All we have found so far is that - the devices stop communicating with EAS for long stretches of time- we do not have a root cause. If anyone out there has any suggestions - any idea what may be causing the issue - please respond. Our Enterprise moved to Office 365 in October 2014 - about when this issue started happening - this is also roughly when iOS 8 came out. Any help is appreciated.

We are still engaged with Microsoft since December of 2014, to try to troubleshoot this e-mail delay - non delivery issue. Since my last post we have confirmed reports of this issue "Exchange e-mail is not delivered to iOS 8 device until a manual sync / step is taken" in other organizations which are not Office 365 and just running exchange 2010 on-premise. Here is the first response I have gotten from Microsoft with anything looking like a root cause. Our Premier support specialist replied with this, which he said he got from Microsoft's internal Apple team.

“There is a new feature in iOS 8 where the device protects
against a Ping/Sync loop. If Exchange responds to 3 consecutive Ping requests
with a status of 2, and then does not send any data in the corresponding Sync
request, the device will “black list” that folder and not attempt again until
the user manually syncs the folder.”

This "Sounds" exactly like our issue. I am still trying to catch the problem in our lab with iOS 8 devices setup to route through a PC running Fiddler tracing.

My question is - even if I catch the above mentioned behavior - what am I supposed to do about it?

Thanks for this. I am having a similar issue with iPhones and Activesync on a site I am working on.

You can see the "Ping" requests stop for iphones to the exchange server and from then on only a "sync" message is sent. This seem to affect the exchnage global address list loading as well.

We seem to be only seeing the issue on iPhone 5 and 5s devices on iOS8 (any version), funnily enough iPhone 6 and ipad etc are working fine and do not seem to show the issue.

Please keep us updated - I am about to log an apple support call to see if they can help us with this issue.

I was able to catch the issue in our lab and submit the "fiddler" log - and EAS (Exchange ActiveSync) logs to Microsoft Premier services. FYI - Fiddler is free utility that monitors web traffic, which we configured to route all of the test iPhone e-mail traffic through. Originally we had several iPhones routing Wi-Fi traffic (with cellular data off) through a test PC running Fiddler logging. We caught the issue but Microsoft wanted a cleaner 1 to 1 log. So, Just last week we caught the issue with only 1 iPhone connected to the test PC running fiddler. I am not familiar enough to analyze the logs on my own but did catch the issue and submitted them. I will respond back to this forum when/if I get a good answer. I fear we are all waiting on an iOS and/or Exchange update to finally fix this. Please put pressure on your Microsoft and Apple support contacts to see this issue resolved. If anyone has any insight please respond, I check back regularly. My internal customers have been patient with us but the issue is painful, literally missing e-mails from bosses and on-call tickets.
