iPhone 6 Plus Crashing (a lot)

Hi All,

I was hoping for some very detailed advice on getting my iPhone 6 Plus to stop crashing. It's happening many times per day and almost makes using the device futile.

When it arrived, I backed up my old iPhone 5S to iTunes (encrypted) and then restored that backup onto the iPhone 6 Plus. During the restoration everything went smooth, but after it rebooted and began syncing the apps back over, I would hear the phone ping (charge sound) and syncing would pause for a moment. Turns out it was having a mini crash and the Apple logo would appear for a few seconds, then it would start syncing again. No problems or errors were produced on the iPhone or iTunes.

Once restoration was complete (iOS 8.0.2), all of my stuff was there and iTunes still reported 0 errors. But as I used the phone, I would notice some weird stuff:

1) Swiping between app pages quickly would cause the same mini crash and the Apple logo would appear a few seconds before the phone came back up.

2) After launching an app a few times, the "preview" iOS shows when zooming into the app would become the app icon itself (rather than a preview of the app). This would happen for all apps when entering and exiting.

3) Some stock apps (like Calendar) would be missing their icon altogether.

4) The dark area representing a folder would disappear and the tiny icons just looked as if they were floating.

5) Lots more crashing (when using Siri, when just in my pocket, etc).

If you're still reading this, it's obvious I have a problem in my backup that is causing springboard issues (or something). The obvious solution is to restore the phone to factory settings and not reapply the backup, but I have valuable text messages dating back to 2007 that I'd really like to retain. Keeping that in mind, here's what I've tried:

- Restoring from the same iTunes backup again

- Turning off "Documents and Data" in iCloud

- Reset all Settings

- Reset Home Screen Layout

- Restore from slightly older iCloud backup

- Reduce the number of apps being synced over

When I setup as a new phone after restoration, the problem does appear to go away (in the brief amount of time I spent trying to crash it). I really just need some troubleshooting advice I haven't tried that would (at a minimum) allow me to retain the text message conversations and related media (picture and video messages).

Any thoughts that could accomplish this or information on what this problem actually is? I'm willing to supply logs, etc, if that would be useful.

Thanks very much!!

Payton

I have had two AT&T 6+ 128GB space gray iPhones with 877 apps with the same issue. I restored the first from my 5s backup from iTunes. My first 6+ crashed every minute or so doing about anything even unlocking it. Sometimes it would reload the spring board, crash again two or three more times before I could use it. I was using 8.02. I changed from "Standard" view to "Zoomed". I only got maybe one crash every two days. Much more stable. Looked to be some sort of rendering issue where iPhones have to convert resolution to the screen I suspected. I hoped for a software bug fix with 8.1, so I updated to version 8.1, and before it completed, the phone got stuck in endless reboots. The top bar with the time and battery would just show up with the apple logo, then disappear and reboot again. I held the power button and home button for 10 seconds, and it rebooted, crashed again, then came up saying 8.1 installed successfully. I turned on "standard" view. It crashed within a 30 seconds.

More symptoms to note: Wallpapers can't be changed in "Standard" view. I couldn't change in "zoomed" view consistently, but was able to pick one wallpaper, then pick a second while still in the wallpaper app. This allowed the first wallpaper selected to show up after exiting. Some sort of bug there...

Other symptoms besides crashing: Screen shots don't work when it is about to crash. When I open or close apps, the icon goes full screen like a splash screen of the actual icon being zoomed out or in on all pixelated instead of the app. This is the case for any app including Messages, Calculator, Mail, etc. For example, when I tap the calculator icon, the actual icon zooms to full screen and looks 1980's video game pixelated, then the calculator appears. Same when I hit the home button, the pixelated icon zooms out back to the folder. This is all with "Standard" view.

The first 6+ had a hardware issue where the home button made a crunching sound like a plastic sack when I pressed it, so I got an express replacement in the mail from Apple. It came with 8.02, so I installed my SIM, set it up as a new iPhone, and installed 8.1 before restoring my iTunes backup from my old 6+ backup. After the new on had 8.1, I put the sim back in the first 6+, backed it up in iTunes, put the sim back in the new 6+, restored everything, and hoped the clean 8.1 install resolved the issue.

It didn't. I switched to "Standard" view, it crashed like the other 6+ did. All of the symptoms are the same as the other 6+. I don't think it is a hardware issue as I have had the same issue on two 6+ phones. I am stuck in zoom view until Apple hopefully identifies and resolves the issue with an update.

I see sometimes it can be remedied by setting up as a new iPhone and manually adding each app back in. I don't have time to deal with that as I am a busy person with two jobs. My luck, it wouldn't work on mine, and would waste a day working on a bug workaround. Apple needs to identify and resolve the issue with an update as many people have this issue, and this is their most expensive flagship phone.

I have excellent eyesight, and want to fit more text on the screen to take advantage of the screen real estate I have been waiting for for 3 years or more. I have kept staying loyal to Apple going through the new model each year waiting on more storage space and screen real estate to suit my needs while all of my fellow techy Android co-workers laugh at my past tiny Apple phones. Now, I finally have the storage space and screen size I have needed, but this large screen is basically zomming in on everything making the text big enough for my grandpa to read without glasses since standard mode doesn't work.

Sorry guys... had to rage a little. It's been painful.

MacRumors has picked up on the story suggesting it may be a hardware problem. http://www.macrumors.com/2014/11/04/iphone-6-128-crashing-boot-loops/

I swapped my original 128GB 6+ and the second one exhibited the same problems so it's either a common hardware problem, an uncommon hardware problem and I'm unlucky, or a software problem and hopefully fixable in a future update.

Same exact symptoms on my 6 Plus (64 not 128). And like isup3rf1y describes above, too. Springboard- and wallpaper-related crashes, app icons stretching weirdly at app launch, etc., and only if I restore from my old iPhone 5. (I have about 1k apps and 10 GB free. Not many photos, and 1 few GB of music.)

But I CANNOT lose all that stuff. I'll try restoring AGAIN (hours-long process) and enabling Zoom mode. Otherwise, I'm really stuck until Apple fixes this.

There is very clearly more than one type of problem being discussed here, although some of the symptoms are common.

I have a done a LOT of experimentation now, and have 100% confidence I know what the cause of my own problem is. I suspect however that Apple engineers also know the cause, but are not telling you. There is no way I could find it in 4 hours of experimentation, and they could not.

I need to collate my notes, which I wrote as I ran the experiment, and then write them up in a legible manner. I will then share it here shortly. I had 2 identical phones to work with.

I have performed a detailed experiment which has found the "cause" of the problem. The root cause (hardware or faulty iOS) is of course unknown to me, although I am sure Apple engineers already know it but are not disclosing the information for commercial reasons.

In summary, my conclusion is that anything over around 793 apps installed causes noticeable instability. There may be infrequent crashes even at 793 apps, but none were noted in a short test period. Size of apps or other non app files have no effect on crashing behaviour.

EXPERIMENT:

iPhone 6 Plus 128GB crashes repeatedly, even sitting idly untouched. It always crashes when it goes into sleep mode (screen off), or when manually put into sleep mode using the power button. It also has a number of bugs, including always crashing when attempting to change wallpaper. Cannot take screenshots.

A replacement identical iPhone showed exactly the same behaviour, but additionally has unreliable wifi.

USAGE:
ios 8.1
Normal (not zoomed) view - I have found that changing zoom mode appears to be a placebo effect
88 songs
45 videos
388 photos
1052 apps
51.0 GB available free

Decided on the following test methodology as it is opposite to Apple's suggested technique of using a fresh install and installing apps one by one. This way I started with a supposedly flawed backup/installation, and removed files.

TEST 1:
Put phone into Airplane mode. Touch ID and passcode off. No iCloud.

Crashing as above.

TEST 2:
Deleted all photos, all videos and all music.
Crashing as above. No change.

TEST 3:
Decided to delete the 12 biggest Apps, to see if App size was a factor.
1040 apps
62.8GB free
51.3GB used
Crashing as above. No change. BUT can now take screen shots.

TEST 4:
Decided to randomly start deleting apps.
980 apps
48.6GB used
65.5GB free
More stable. But folder backgrounds still vanishing. Crashed when trying to change wallpaper.

TEST 5:
Deleted more random apps.
908 apps
47.1GB used
67.0GB free
No change to above.

TEST 6:
Deleted more random apps.
888 apps
46.6GB used
67.5GB free
Appears stable, no crashing. Will not crash even when repeatedly putting into sleep & wake modes. Folder backgrounds present. No crashes when trying to change wallpaper, but will not actually effect any changes.

TEST 7:
Deleted more random apps.
793 apps
43.7GB used
70.3GB free
Appears 100% stable, no crashing. Will not crash even when repeatedly putting into sleep & wake modes. I tried filling the memory with lots of big games running in the background. It would not crash. Folder backgrounds present at all times. Wallpapers can be changed at will. No abnormal behaviour noted whatsoever.

RESULT: iPhone is STABLE!

Excellent testing! If you install one app now, will it start crashing again?

I have the same symptoms you mentioned plus the halo around folders missing randomly in standard view. With my phone, I definately notice a big difference with the frequency of crashes with standard view. I have less with zoomed view, but it is much more stable. With zoomed view the most common crash I get is when trying to switch apps by pressing the home button twice and tapping the app I want. About 40% of the time it crashes regardless of the app. I get other random crashes with zoomed view, but nothing like standard view. I have switched back and forth from standard to zoomed, and standard is consistently very unstable beyond usability. After getting last being upset about the phone being a piece of junk in standard view, it starts to be somewhat enterraining to have friends gather around the phone to watch it respring randomly no matter what you try to do on it. Just ttying to unlock the phone becomes unstable causing one or many crashes.

Does anyone thino there is anything to this article? They suspect TLC flash is to blame for the 128GB iPhone 6 Plus issues we are seeing.
