On shut down, popup appears to ask if I want to abort installation

Hello!

I am currently on a Macbook Pro Retina late 2013 model running Maverick (10.9.5). I have noticed if I shut down my computer, the screen goes grey and a popup appears with the package icon asking me if I want to abort the install in progress. I have no idea what install. If I chose abort, then it immediately shuts down. Next time I try to shut down, it will do the same thing again.

This time, I selected Yes to continue installing, another box that was blank appeared and then a few minutes later the Mac shut down.

I have not noticed anything weird since-- although I am a paranoid maybe I started to download something nefarious and mistakenly installed it.

Any clues as to what this was? Or has anyone else seen this?

I am running a Macscan now but I have heard it is pretty unreliable. Any other ideas of things I should do?

Thanks!

Christina

Thanks Jack!

I searched for "Reset Search" in Spotlight (with Application as a filter, click that little plus icon to the right to filter the search) and then used AppZapper to completely remove it. Now, no lame "Abort Install" dialogue on restart or shutdown.

Thanks bananapurry and all of you for your answers

I follow all the topics Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support and it works

Follow instructions particularly for Vsearch and Genieo in your Applications and Preferences System and Users and empty trash in secure mode

Since i do that i turn off my computer and the window "abort install'" disappear

I wish you all an happy new year without malware

AdwareMedic worked for me. Two anti-virus programs took hours and found nothing. AdwareMedic worked and did it in less than a minute. I donated US$20. Nice. Fixed Safari and Firefox crash problem (so far as I can tell after a day's use). Considering all the time I had spent, I didn't want to have to keep reading articles and trying things. I was totally frustrated in part because I wanted to do a clone (which I do weekly).

DISCLAIMER: I am not in any way associated with the AdwareMedic people. I lucked out finding this thread during a search, tried AdwareMedic (and a couple other suggestions in this thread) and it worked for me.

I worked out how to get rid of this message you need to go into activity monitor, you can find it by opening finder, click on applications, and then further click on the Utilities folder and you will find it in there. You should see the installer icon (there was 2 on mine) and all you do is force quit these. that sorted it out for me. Not sure what they were but happy my Mac is back to normal. Hope this helps.

Eric Root provided the solution to fix my pop-up at shutdown which was related to the Adobe Flash Player that I recently upgraded. The thing is, I use the Chrome browser and I didn't know that Chrome keeps Flash up to date automatically. I can't recall which website I was on that told me to update my Flash Player but there was the problem; I didn't need to update it. Hum, I wonder why the Flash Player wasn't working on that site then. Hum... well, I may have been using Firefox at the time. Anyway, to Eric, thank you! 🙂
