FaceTime camera appears off-center

I noticed today that on my iPhone 6 the FaceTime camera on the front appears way off-center. I've attached a photo, but it's a little hard to see. It doesn't seem to interfere with the camera, but I don't really know that without a comparison and I haven't seen any other iPhone 6 in person to compare how it looks. Should I

take this in to have looked at?

I'm just quietly laughing to myself until someone actually posts a picture. The general question is: will this cause interference? The answer is: maybe, so let's have a look.

But no one wants to post a picture taken with the 'affected' lens. It's starting to get ridiculous.

If someone said on this forum, "Hey, I've got a weird effect on my display," then usually we'd ask them to post an image. If they don't, then it gets ignored.

If you think your device is defective, get Apple to look at it. If they agree, they'll probably exchange it.

Fair enough, you never know people's background in the forums.

If you've been shooting for a long time, then you should understand that someone can't just post a picture from the camera with a diffraction problem without comparing it to another sample that doesn't have the issue. That means taking two phones with and without the crescent, setting up a test scene ideally with some detail, and take photos using both devices in identical lighting conditions.

But what someone can do is post a picture to see if there is any kind of distortion that seems to correspond to what I'd expect to see if there was an interfering obstruction. Which ConorJW just did.

And now that I see that, I agree that, at least in his situation, there is a defect that is causing interference. And in similar situations, I would think there would be similar interference.

Now, based on that, I completely agree that it's causing actual, technical problems, and should be addressed by Apple.

It took about a month or so for someone to finally upload a picture. Could have saved a lot of effort if that had been posted much earlier.

Not sure if you mistyped something there. I know far more than the average person about photography, both in practice and in theory.

Been using both film and digital for years, and no I don't mean a 'point & shoot' either. Just got my Nikon D1 back from a repair shop actually. And it's always such a hard time deciding which of my 15+ lenses to pack, or whether I'm really going to need my closeup Speedlight. *sigh*

@ TJBUSMC1973 I don't think you need to prove yourself to anyone. I'm taking the neutral side here just like you. I think these people are refusing to see your point and quite bluntly I don't know what all the crying is about. I've got the crescent moon thingy, you've got it, almost every other person here has got it. It's some kind of weird but normal behavior for the space grey iPhone 6. I have it and other than only noticing it now after reading online about it it's caused me no issues. Yes I do get it people pay a lot of money for it so they expect perfection. I'm so anal about the condition of mine I keep it in an OtterBox which is so bulky and if I got the most minuscule mark on it it would drive me crazy and I would swap it out. I'm financing my 128 GB Space Grey iPhone 6 from AT&T on the Next Plan and it's costing me the whole amount for the phone so yes initially I was annoyed and like what the heck the iPhone should be perfect. But ONCE AGAIN-AS PREVIOUSLY STATED-its happening to a lot of people-even right after swapping it out so after that I consider it a common behavior. Then I act like an adult and don't care. I have AppleCare+ so I'm covered. If Apple says something I'll swap it out if my pics become defective I'll swap it out but enough people have swapped it out to no avail. It's a common behavior. If it's causing camera issues swap it out. If you just don't like it swap it out. Otherwise be mad but what's that going to fix? Nothing. Just saying.

My iphone got that today. Went to an Apple store and they refuse to replace the phone but to open it up and fix it.

I referred to this post that most,if not all, customers with the same problem got their phone replaced right away. Then a "GENIUS" laughed at me and said "the internet also says the world is flat? Do you believe everything the internet says?"

That was extremely rude and unprofessional. I had to call in the manager and he refused to swap the phone either and said I could either choose to get it fixed or simply keep the phone as it is.

So What I did is to ask him for the apple care number, ask him to stay with me, call the 800 number on speaker phone and wait patiently as the bot says 15 minutes waiting time. 2 minutes later the manager told me that they would replace the phone.

The misalignment is not a big issue but the attitude from that GENIUS was very offending. I went to different apple stores in California, Nevada, and Boston and never had this kind of experience before.

Not sure whether this is the Arkansas apple store tradition or what.

An Apple store in Nashville refused to replace mine. They offered a screen replacement but said it would probably do the same thing since Apple hasn't officially addressed it. Half their displayed space grey 6's had it in the store but the Genius bar acted like I was the first one to bring it to their attention. Initially they refused to do anything at all about it and stated it was a cosmetic issue. I complained to a manager at the store and he offered a screen replacement. I didn't like the idea of having the screen replaced on a otherwise perfectly new iPhone 6 so I declined until I could see what other options I have. Based on my past experiences, I was floored they didn't offer me a replacement. I should probably call customer care.

Im on my 5th, yes 5th replacement that I got from the apple store. All 4 leading up to this one had the camera issue either out of the box, or had it show up within a week. This last one I have had for a month now and its still been perfect. Maybe they caught this issue finally. But I went to a huge store here in IL. They all too gave me crap about replacing the 3rd to 4th and the 4th to 5th. But I screamed at people and called apple, and they bent. Im glad I did. This 5th one is perfect. Goodluck to you people and keep on them. Their quailty had turned to shat.

Oh and one last thing. And this is a Bombshell. My wife's silver launch day 6 has also developed this issue. We all thought it was just the space gray ones, but honestly after looking at hers under direct light, the cresent shape is there too but its almost the same color as the screen(white), so you can almost miss if it you are not directly looking for it.

But yes, the silver 6's have it too.

Dec 18, 2014 9:56 AM in response to brianfrommchenry

oh 😟 i guess its less obvious on the white screen border models. so is this ALL iPhone 6 that have the defect???? if you've got the defect why not post the colour, capacity (16, 64, 128GB), and the rough date of purchase (and country). there may be a pattern. personally i feel apples products are becoming now more quantity than quality 😢

mine is a 64gb space grey, pre-ordered in UK and arrived on day of release

Sounds like he was taking a light-hearted approach, trying to keep things casual, and you had an attitude. He's got a point; there's a lot of misinformation on the Internet. All that matters in regards to an Apple product is what is official in Apple's policies/procedures. Nothing on this forum is official. Says so in the Terms of Use of the forum.

well if the person being served feels the Genius is being rude and unprofessional, then thats more credible then us debating whether or not the employee was being light hearted or not. the main issue is he was refused a replacement. also, it says 12639 viewed this conversation- this probably means a lot of people have the lovely iCrescent, if i may call it that lol

Number of views would not correlate to the number of people with an issue. Many people read these threads, myself included and neither of my iPhone 6, nor anyone I personally know with an iPhone 6 have had shifting front facing cameras. And no, just because I haven't experienced this doesn't mean I have doubts other's have had this issue.

Faulty logic. The number of views does not correspond to the number of people that have viewed this thread. Each individual view of any of page in this thread counts as a view. So, if I start at page 1, then go through all 9 pages, that's nine views. If I come back to this thread again, on any page, that's another view. And so on.

There are about 130 replies. And many of those replies are the same unique person. And only 13 people have clicked on "I have this question too." And that's 3 Users and 10 Guests (anonymous users that didn't sign in).

Mike Gonzales, tsanga & jdvl116 are the only Users that have said they have this issue too.

And he wasn't refused a replacement. Read it again. The manager replaced the device, after the customer consulted with Apple Support, who probably investigated the issue and approved to waive the out-of-warranty fee.

Again, anything posted on this forum is not an official Apple response. Therefore, there could be a thousand people that posted here that said Apple just replaced their iPhones. That doesn't matter. Each situation is unique. It is always at the discretion of Apple or an Apple representative whether or not to allow for an exchange of a device. This forum does not set precedences, so no one should base their expectation of their interaction. Anyone who does so is foolish.

If hellozero didn't like the Apple Genius' comment, then he should report it to the Store Manager, which is what happened. No one here has anything to do with that store, so the 'complaint' was already been filed.

And to be honest, IMNSHO, anyone that is upset over this minor cosmetic issue is probably touchy & uptight to begin with, and probably lacks a sense of humor, and having seen many such people out in the world, IMNSHO, it's far more likely that the Apple Genius was trying to keep things lighthearted, and hellozero was already on edge. In the end, according to him, he did get the issue resolved. So, not really sure what the point of the post was; to complain about an Appel Store? Interesting... that's a direct violation of the intent of this forum.
