Yosemite and Logic Pro X

Hello.

Since there does not seem to be a thread regarding Logic Pro X on Yosemite yet, I thought I might as well get the ball rolling.

For the early adopters, how are you experiencing LPX on Yosemite? Good or bad so far?

For those who have not yet adopted Yosemite but are thinking about doing so, here is some really good advice from community participant "The Art of Sound": Latest OS X & Logic Pro Compatibility Information

Thanks for the contribution if any.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Logic Pro X.0.7

Hi there! I suffered from the same issue with CPU spikes in Yosemite and Logic Pro X! And i was forced to roll back to Mavericks..

So I've tried to give one more chance to the system and updated my mid 2011 iMac to Yosemite 10.10.1 and got the latest LPX update 10.1 as well. Sooo... here's COMPLETELY the same story 😟 At first start there was no any CPU problems, but after rebooting my machine it started all over again.. I guess it's buried somewhere deep inside relationships of mid 2011 iMacs specification with Yosemite.

HOWEVER

The following fix has completely resolved the problem:

1) Open a terminal

2) Enter and run the following command, entering your password when prompted:

sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0xd4e"

3) Restart the computer

So after this solution not only Logic works flawlessly - the overall OS X UI works smoothly!!!

Hope it will help you too!

Actually,... from what I understand... from the VMWare forums where this type of 'fix' first reared it's head... to solve slow performance when using VM Fusion....

1) Open a terminal

2) Enter and run the following command, entering your password when prompted:

sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0x10"

3) Restart the computer

...should provide for the same benefits and is a lot less intrusive....

However, it's worth noting that many people recommending this 'fix' do not know or understand how it works or what it really does and there may be unforeseen consequences in doing so.... so I'm not absolutely sure it should be recommended.

In other words, such a fix is applied at your own risk!

The excitement at seeing a Logic update overwhelmed me... I will take deep breaths and try to calm down.

Hey Murray

Ok... I'm going to say after testing 10.1 and OS X 10.10.2 exclusively for the last 36 hours almost non stop.. on two different Mac Testbed setups...that a lot of the performance related issues seem to be fixed.. Things are running a lot more smoothly and efficiently now then they did the last time I tested out 10.0.7 under 10.10.1 and 10.10.2 Betas

However, I still find 10.1 a little unstable at times.. with random crashes that don't seem to have any rhyme or reason... on both Macs.

The crashes aren't exactly showstoppers because they are not that frequent.. I've had maybe 4 in total during the last 36 hours of pretty intensive use...... and in each case the project was auto saved and restored perfectly after such a crash... but what concerns me is that i don't know why Logic crashed as the reports don't show a constant or repeatable cause, each one being different to the last.

However, so long as you have a good working backup you can roll back to... then I think it's worth taking the chance and pulling the trigger on the update to both 10.10.2 and LP10.1

Of course, it's still very early days in testing and other things may come to light later....... so please take that into account but so far, performance wise, which was my biggest complaint during my prior testing, that has improved a great deal.

Cheers..

Hi Nigel

Thanks very much for your report, really appreciated.

Is one of those test-bed setups your mid 2011 iMac ??

4 random crashes in 36 hours sounds ok to me, I'm a thrill seeker 😉

I've already got 10.1 running.

As stated in another thread, it installed itself in the back ground without me having a chance to copy 10.0.7 in the Application Folder. Of course I have 10.0.7 in Time Machine if I really want to go back.

So far 10.1 seems fine to me on 10.9.5.

Sounds like I can give Yosemite another chance now with 10.10.2.

I will of course do a SuperDuper backup of everything running on 10.9.5 before taking the dive.

Thanks again Nigel.

They both are... Two identical 2011 i7 3.4Ghz Quad Core 32GB iMacs.

Heh! Well for me, its a bit unusual given I have otherwise had only 1 crash in the last 6 months using LP9.1.5 and OS X 10.6.8 (due to a bad Kontakt Library) and 3 crashes in the last 3 months on my OS X 10.9.4.. and 10.0.2 rig... (random causes) so 4 in 36 hours is a bit... extreme for me 🙂

Note: If you do find you have performance issues with 10.10.2 and LPX then try the 'fix' I posted earlier in this thread first before rolling back....

1) Open a terminal

2) Enter and run the following command, entering your password when prompted:

sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0x10"

3) Restart the computer

As this does seem to fix things for those that are still having such issues with performance under 10.10.2

Thanks again Nigel.

You are welcome Murray.... and as always, please let us know how you get on as such feedback is always appreciated!

In the meantime I'll be continuing testing for at least the next couple of weeks to see how things go and I'll report back as and when needed, if anything changes...

Cheers..

Please keep regular updates about Yosemite and LPX. You seem to be the only one posting about this topic in great detail. Two thumbs up for you!!

I'm in a bit of a pickle where I stand. I'm running Logic Pro 9 on OS 10.6.8 with a SSL MadiXtreme PCIe card and a SSL Alpha Link A/D D/A....It's been rock solid it's entire life!!! However, nothing and no one supports 10.6.8(new Waves, UAD or even Chrome for that matter). I really would love to make the switch to Logic ProX.... but I'm forced to use Yosemite as the OS. And, with all of the issues, SSL may or may not choose to fully support Yosemite drivers for the MadiXtreme. If and when they do I would love to make the switch to Yosemite.... and you seem to be my only outlet for information.

As for now I'm stuck several years in the past. But, Logic Pro 9 currently is absolutely stable..... so there is at least that. Bare minimum I can always upgrade to Mountain Lion and have evything work..... just can't move to Logic ProX at that point.

Cheers!!

MFB4040,

Like yourself and a few others here... I use 10.6.8 and Logic Pro 9 (9.1.5 in my case) as my default working setup still... because of it's stability and general performance compared to newer LPX and OS X combinations...

While it would be interesting to use some of the newer 10.8/9/10 only plugins.. I just don't find that incentive enough to switch to a LPX/OS X 10.9/10 setup for my main work...

However, you can of course (if you don't have two Macs that is..) add an external HD to your current Mac... and install OS X 10.10 and LPX on that and boot up using that config when needed.... retaining your 10.6.8 and LP9 setup for use when you truly need stability and overall performance so you end up with the best of both worlds, so to speak...

Anyhow, I'll be continuing on with my testing over the next few weeks and I'll be reporting back as and when I can.... and so your kind words, in respect to this.. are appreciated, truly.

Cheers..

You and I think exactly alike!

My plan is..... if SSL will support OSX 10.10 fully(which is hard to tell on their support page) to add another internal drive with the new OS and

Logic X.....Retaining everything I've done until now on a separate drive and choosing which drive to boot into. Drives are silly cheep on OWC. If the upgrade doesn't work well at first, I can ride it out until things smooth out with Yosemite..... and still work in Logic 9 not sweating bullets.

I'll keep you posted

Exactly! I do much the same thing except I use multiple Macs but thats because I'm an idiot who buys up cheap Macs from Apple's Refurb store.... when they are at prices i cannot refuse!

Anyhow.. as an aside....my other, alternative workflow method with LP9 is... I use Vienna Ensemble Pro on a Mavericks or Yosemite Mac to host the 3rd party plugins (Like the latest Kontakt) that will only work with those newer OS X versions (or even Windows VST plugins running on a Windows PC I have here..) and send them over to my main LP9 Mac using the VEP AU Plugin in LP9.... so LP9 then can still utilize all the recent updated plugins that won't work under Snow Leopard...

I'll keep you posted

Please do so Marty....

Cheers..
