I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite yesterday. I found that Apple TV mirroring is broken. I can only hear voice and can't choose mirror.

I had the same issue when trying to mirror Netflix. What worked fine before in Mavericks suddenly didn't.
Come Yosemite, what happens is -- start playing Netflix in Safari, ask to mirror it to Apple TV and up pops the message "Whoops, something went wrong...Display Error. There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirrored using Airplay."
Yet I could mirror my screen, YouTube, whatever. I could also mirror Netflix on my iPad to the selfsame screen.
Then got wonderful help from Netflix: "Try with Google Chrome". It mirrored fine!!!!
So it's an issue within the Safari/Netflix hookup. The workaround is Google Chrome.
Michael, I love the multiple Time Machine suggestion and will consider it after this last experience.
However, specific to your wifi comments - I thought the same thing and switched the ATV to ethernet but no dice... the only thing that worked, and worked perfectly, was restoring back to Mavricks. As soon as it was restored, everything worked beautifully... Basically, I think Yosemite is a half baked OS.
Dave,
I had HDCP error before from time to time when using Apple TV in earlier software version. This may be caused by the fact that my Apple TV is connected to AV receiver.
The new issue is that Yosemite broke iMac airplay mirroring. My Macbook Air airplay mirroring is fine. I'm not sure if Apple is going to address in upcoming 10.10.2 patch. But 10.10.1 didn't fix it.
Several of us have submitted a bug report to Apple but it seems that nobody from Apple has attempted to contact us for more details such as a system report to try and identify the cause of the problem. Very frustrating
Grrr
A possible workaround for the airplay/wifi issues is to use the following terminal command
sudo ifconfig awdl0 downThis will disable AWDL & Airdrop but will allow you to have bluetooth on with airplay...
sudo ifconfig awdl0 upWill re-enable.

I tried the terminal command and there was no change - Airplay mirroring is still not working from my iMac. I went to the link you suggested and realised that the tip might also address another problem I was having with Yosemite - making and receiving mobile phone calls using my iMac was not working. Now it is so thank you!
Sorry it didn't work out for you. I had been turning off bluetooth to use Airplay to now but this allows me to use both together now. Funnily enough this was suggested to me as a fix for something else but wound up being a solution to this!
I'm curious to know if you've tried on both 2.4G & 5G networks? I also switched wifi off and on again after running the command...
I haven't played with wifi settings as Airplay mirroring works perfectly with my Macbook Pro on my wifi network. The iMac won't work (Airplay mirroring) with either ethernet or wifi. Also iTunes on the iMac successfully play movies on my Apple TV. It is only the inability to use the Apple TV as an extra display that it so frustrating after "upgrading" to Yosemite.
This solution seems to have fixed my issue, but only on the 2.4 ghz network.
Background on my issue: 2013 iMac and 3rd Gen Apple TV, airplay mirroring worked flawlessly before the upgrade to Yosemite. After upgrade airplay mirroring had audio and video stuttering at regular intervals and display name showed as Living Room Apple TV (2) [this display name seemed strange and was new after upgrade]. The interval seemed to be slower on the 2.4 ghz network than the 5. Frequent restarts of both the apple tv and imac would temporarily remedy the audio stuttering and very rarely the audio and video stuttering. Airplay from iphone 5s and ipad mini one works well in iOS8.
The fix: Ran the recommended script while connected to the 5 ghz network. Reset both devices. First airplay connection worked flawlessly, but both issues returned after disconnecting and reconnecting airplay connection. Ran the reverse to script to re-enable AWDL & Airdrop. Switched to the 2.4 ghz network on both devices, ran the script to disable AWDL & Airdrop again, airplay connected a couple of times, and the problem seems to have been remedied. Device name has returned toLiving Room Apple TV. I have since re-connected to the airplay mirroring 5x or so and it seems to be stable.
I have 802.11 ac router, 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz uses two different SSID. Are you saying that it solve the iMac mirroring problem once restart both iMac and Apple TV and then use 2.4Ghz for wifi?
Could you share your script? Restarting iMac takes me 4 to 6 minutes. It is not fun to do it again and again.
Ricky,
This was the fix suggested by doovers above. Script came from these guys:

And yes, my 2.4 and 5 use two SSID's as well. I has been using the 5. Switched to the 2.4, ran his script and the mirroring was fixed.
On a side note, Yosemite broke my shut down also. But I'll gripe about that on another thread.
Just to add to the mystery here... I upgraded to Yosemite and it broke my connection to Airplay on all of my devices, iOS and OSX.
I reverted to Mavricks and it seemed to have immediately solved the connection issues. However, I've now noticed that my local wifi connection in the house is somehow horribly degraded. I don't have benchmarks to compare against - as I never anticipated this issue - but my local wifi is now one step above dial-up.
I have yet to run the scripts above - seriously Apple, ***?!? - but I did disable Airdrop per the comments in the link. No net benefit.
I Had to diSable AWDL on both my IMac and Macbook Pro to get the home network working well again.
STill no airplay mirroring on the iMac though
I should have mentioned that the medium.com page suggested by doovers is mainly about wifi problems with Yosemite. Mario suggests that Apple Wireless Direct Link (AWDL) is causing some of the problems. AWDL links devices that are not on the same wifi network. Most people, like me, don't need this "feature".
Also I see that you have reverted to Mavericks and are experiencing wifi problems so this probably won't help you.
This is giving me deja vu of Windows around 2003 when I switched to Mac!
I have a 13" MacBook Pro with retina display, purchased in September. I have a 3rd gen AppleTV purchased about the same time. The MacBook is typically connected to the network via a wired connection, and the AppleTV is on wifi. Mirroring worked flawlessly until about a week ago.
I upgraded from Maverick to Yosemite on November 16, and to the latest release (10.10.1). on November 21. I have a 3rd gen AppleTV and according to Settings-General the software is up-to-date. In the past week AppleTV mirroring with the MacBook has become very erratic with symptoms similar to those described on this thread: from "stuttering" performance, to video without sound, to loss of mirroring altogether. Same results with both Firefox and Safari. Mirroring with an iPhone 4S (iOS 7) works fine.
Based on this discussion, Yosemite might be the problem. I haven't tried any troubleshooting steps mentioned on this thread and am not sure whether I should attempt to revert to Maverick or try something else first. Appreciate any advice ... thanks.
