Yosemite broke Apple TV mirroring

I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite yesterday. I found that Apple TV mirroring is broken. I can only hear voice and can't choose mirror.

I'd say save your sanity and revert to Mavricks. Yosemite is half baked.

From the reading I've been doing it is more than just the AWDL protocol that is screwing with things. Yosemite and iOS8 both attempt to scan local networks for other devices to push content to through the Air Drop for photos, etc and the hand off functions (take a call on your computer, for example) and it seems all this chatter is clogging the airwaves.

Suppose I am of two minds, it's great they want to push this level of functionality but it's incredibly annoying that it is half baked and they are using us as guinea pigs to experiment with.

i have another sign of wifi connection issues. I (stupidly) upgraded my old imac to Yosemite. It is mainly used as a server for the Apple TV. However now the ATV is intermittently not recognising the iMac on the wifi network. I have to restart the iMac to make it appear on the ATV menu. The iMac is too old for AWDL and so it is something else. Anyway, it occurs to me that changing form WPA2 to WPA might be similar to restarting the iMac as it adds the iMac back into the network.

BTW - I use 2 Apple Time Capsules for wifi Through the house. One extends the network and is connected to the other by ethernet cable. this might be a factor in the continuing Airplay mirroring (video) problems with my new(er) iMac. Airplay works fine for streaming music and even iTunes video.

Mirroring is now working fine for me, and I've done absolutely nothing to address the problem I reported on November 30. I just kept trying it every day or so. On two occasions, the Apple TV/mirroring icon disappeared from my Mac's menu bar, but returned after restarting the AppleTV (disconnect/reconnect power). We've mirrored several times since Thursday without any problems.

So, I don't think this has anything to do with Yosemite, and I suspect my wifi could be a factor. There might be something to the WPA2 theory posted above. I'm dealing with another wifi issue that goes away if I remove WPA2 security from my network.

So ... to summarise the Airplay display mirroring problem:

iMac - ethernet - timecapsule - wifi - AppleTV DOES NOT WORK

iMac - ethernet - timecapsule - ethernet - AppleTV DOES NOT WORK

iMac - wifi - timecapsule - wifi - AppleTV DOES NOT WORK

iMac with AWDL disabled - ethernet - timecapsule - wifi - AppleTV DOES NOT WORK

CAPTION: NOT WORKING ON iMAC (EXTENDED DESKTOP IS A BLANK SCREEN ON THE APPLETV AND MIRRORING OPTION CANNOT BE SELECTED)

But the iMac running iTunes will Airplay video and audio (eg playing movies from iTunes)

Retina Macbook Pro - wifi - timecapsule - wifi - AppleTV WORKS

Same issue! Can't work in mid-2011 after upgrading to 10.10 or 10.10.1 ... black screen shown on TV. I have checked all solution from web, and 100% sure no third party library or remote screen library existed...

That really suck!! I really feel today's apple no longer like previous generation...it's been many months and still no solution come out! I want go downgrade to previous version now.. 😟

If you want to raise this issue to Apple, file a bug report to https://bugreport.apple.com/. After I waited for 10 days, Apple replied the following. Although there is no solution, at least they should/will aware this mirroring regression bug as more and more people chime in.

We need more information to investigate this issue.

Please collect and attach a sysdiagnose after experiencing the issue.

More on running sysdiagnose:

1. Launch Terminal.app

2. Enter this command: sudo sysdiagnose

3. Enter your admin password

4. When sysdiagnose has completed (may take several minutes), locate the new sysdiagnose file in /var/tmp or /private/var/tmp. Upload that file.

An alternative approach uses a key command:

1. Press Shift-Control-Option-Command-Period when the issue reproduces

2. Wait for a few minutes (you can release the keys).

3. When sysdiagnose has completed (may take several minutes), locate the new sysdiagnose file in /var/tmp or /private/var/tmp. Upload that file.

Please provide your response or results by updating your bug report.

Please compress any bundled files (e.g. nested folders) prior to uploading.

Ricky - the bug report link only works for developers:

"You must be a Registered Apple Developer to file bugs via Bug Reporter..."

They aren't interested in that level of detail from ordinary users via Feedback (but I am happy to provide it, if there is a way)

In any case this is not like a crash or software glitch - an existing menu item no longer works. So I am not sure if sysdiagnose will help them isolate the problem.

Michael,

I didn't notice that requirement to file a bug report. I registered iOS developer certificate.

sysdiagnose generates all sort of log files -- total around 50MB.This may be helpful for them to identify the issue. But I don't have tools to do analysis since there are too many of them. I understand that it is hard to replicate it for Apple OS X development team. Especially, this doesn't always happen.

I found that if I do the following, mirroring may work:

1. disable handoff in iMac, iPhone and iPad

2. delete ~/Library/Caches

3. restart iMac

I can't guarantee that. Because sometimes it suddenly failed to work and sometimes it works in a magic way.

Good luck and give a try.

A possible workaround for the airplay/wifi issues is to use the following terminal command

sudo ifconfig awdl0 down

This will disable AWDL & Airdrop but will allow you to have bluetooth on with airplay...

sudo ifconfig awdl0 up

Will re-enable.
