Yosemite broke Apple TV mirroring

I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite yesterday. I found that Apple TV mirroring is broken. I can only hear voice and can't choose mirror.

Thanks..Actutally I have tried all suggestions here too...Turn off bluetooth, restart the network card, clean up the catch , cleanup library , remove all third party drive in library, fix permission in HD

For further background: Bleow are my home settings, which can help people to locate the root problem...

Note it is "Mirring" Issue only not airplay from Ituen(Works fine on all)

  • mid 2011 2011 imac (Only this one not working)
  • 2013 imac
  • Apptv 3rd generation
  • IP52
  • IPH6
  • IPAD

I have been googing around, and I believe most of unresolved issues came from IMAC MID 2011 Version (after upgraded to Yosemite from Moxxxx)

I got an email from Apple bug report this afternoon. They dup mine to another open defect. Apple may start to take a look into this.

I'm still hanging there and using Macbook air at home to airplay, instead of iMac. It's not ideal but I have to live with it until they get it fixed.

I have serious concern on their quality control and update schedule. I will not upgrade i-stuff recklessly from now on. Lesson learned.

Folks...I've finally fixed my issue. After updating to OS X 10.10.2 updating to the latest apple tv software I revisited the conflicting drivers theory. Some have claimed that previous installs of display software was conflicting with airplay.

I uninstalled AirParrot2 with app zapper.

Then:

Used the link suggested by Siberiankj http://support.airsquirrels.com/article.php?id=8

Restarted, and it's iMac mirroring is finally back to working perfectly like it did before Yosemite.

FIXED!

Hi Guys,

I've got exactly the same issue.

  • MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.6GHz, 16GB, 1TB, Iris Pro 5200 running latest OS X Yosemite (upgraded from Mavericks)
  • AppleTV 3rd generation running latest iOS 7.0.3

When mirroring from my iPhone or my girlfriends iPad, Apple TV works like a charm but when I attempt to mirror from my MacBook, it's choppy and the sound doesn't work. I've tried the following:

  • Disabling AWDL & Airdrop (no change)
  • Disabling Bluetooth (minimal effect but this is unacceptable as I use a wireless APPLE keyboard and mouse)
  • Changing the display to 'Scaled' and setting the resolution to very low (somewhat fixed the choppy-ness but still no sound)

I'm convinced this is a OS X software issue and it's simply ridiculous that it does not work. I'm using only Apple products because I was under the impression that, when combined, they 'just work.' This is my first experience owning something by Apple other than an iPhone and it's really not a good one, which is sad because prior to this I had only heard good things.

When will Apple

  1. Own up to this?
  2. Provide some sort of practical patch/fix other than 'turn off features?'

I want to be able to do what it says on the box it can:

  • Mirror at full resolution (or at the very least 1080p without affecting the display on my MacBook) with sound
  • Mirror without having to turn off Bluetooth and loosing my APPLE keyboard and mouse connectivity
  • Mirror without having to turn off any features on the MacBook

You can have wired keyboards and mice with your iMac......There are plenty of USB devices available (and hubs for that matter if you run out of USB ports on the back of your iMac -- I use an Pluggable 7-Port USB 3.0 hub).

Also, slow Wi-Fi issues are a nature of the beast. I get by all that crap by running an ethernet cable (CAT 6) from my router to my iMac and also to Apple TV. Now, Apple TV downloads much faster and it eliminated intermittent rebuffering (spinning wheel) in most Apple TV content. Ethernet is much, much faster and more secure than Wi-Fi, but requires running (and hiding) ugly ethernet cables.

I have 2 identical iMacs both with Yosemite. One iMac can mirror the other can not. (iPhone and iPad both can mirror.)

On the iMac that can not mirror, it does have extended desktop. And I can play iTunes movies to the Apple TV.

I've uninstalled airparrot also removing additional files recommended in this thread.

Today I've re installed OS X and the iMac still can not mirror.

Perplexing.

Looks like Apple have acknowledged the issue but their solution is still only to turn off Bluetooth.

AirPlay mirroring might stop or drop connection on older 802.11 b/g networks - Apple Support

This isn't an acceptable solution as Bluetooth is essential to me (APPLE Bluetooth mouse and keyboard) and I recently started using Tether on my iPhone.

This is doubly irritating as I spent well over an hour with Apple technical support (case ID:751100289) where they went through and told me to reinstall the software on my BRAND NEW Apple TV and then advised me to reinstall Yosemite on my BRAND NEW MacBook (I don't need to tell you that doing this is a real pain in the ***). This all happened on the 21st of Feb, that statement above was released on the 18th of Feb (W T F Apple?!?).

Are there any representatives from Apple on here that are able to tell me if there are any plans to fix this in a future update or patch?

I know this is aggravating for you, but this in not entirely Apple's fault (or problem).

There are a lot of variables to keep in mind like how old you router is, how fast its WI-FI is and how many devices are using your network.

In my environment, I have a Late 2013 21" iMac running Yosemite 10.10.3 beta, Late Model 2013 Apple TV, Late Model 2014 iPad Air and a Late Model 2012 iPhone 5, an AT&T M-Cell, 47" Visio Smart TV, Canon MX922 Photo Printer and an LG Blu-ray player.

At times Wi-Fi (especially) for me has been an ongoing challenge especially considering all my devices. But I have found that, in my case, the best configuration is a balance of using WI-FI where absolutely necessary (iPhone, iPad, Blu-ray player etc.) and Gigabit Ethernet for more stationary devices (iMac, Apple TV, Printer, AT&T M-Cell, Smart Television etc.) And, at present, I have no complaints about my WI-FI performance (which includes AirPlay, AirPrint and AirPort as well).

But remember, this implies running CAT 6 LAN cables to your devices (which may not be so appealing to you). This also implies that your router and/or switches and networked devices are all new, and fast, enough to be Gigabit Ethernet capable.

The tradeoff is that Gigabit Ethernet is much, much faster and infinitely more secure than Wi-FI, hands down. Albeit, hiding ugly CAT 6 LAN cables can be a pain.

This takes saves a lot of bandwidth for my iPad, iPhone, AirPlay, AirPrint and other wireless services.

And if you own your own wireless router, I suggest you ensure that your are running the latest BIOS upgrade for it. However, if your wireless router is supplied by your internet service provider (Comcast, Charter, AT&T, Frontier, etc.) you probably cannot do this.

Finally, you might be able to boost your wireless router performance by setting it to use 802.11n or 802.11ac wireless protocols. Your networked devices are only as fast, or reliable, as the network you have them connected to.

And ensure you are running the latest OSs on all your Apple devices as well.

If you want to apply constructive pressure on Apple, demand that they make Apple TV Gigabit Ethernet capable in the future. At present it isn't. It still operates at 10/100 Mbps rather than 1000 Mbps (Gigabit) speed when connected via a LAN cable (CAT 6 or otherwise). That is the only real beef I have with Apple TV, when it comes to performance, at this point. Late model iMacs and MacBooks are Gigabit Ethernet capable.

And, once again, in this configuration, I have no problems with AirPlay or wireless in general. Gigabit Ethernet takes a lot of demand from it.

I hope this helps.

See my post of 7 December. I have tried numerous network configurations (wifi and ethernet) and still have the mirroring problem problem with one iMac. It successfully airplays video & audio to the ATV using iTunes but will not mirror the display or extend the display to the ATV. Other Macs on the same network will mirror. I tried numerous "solutions" from this thread.

Other users may have networking problems so your advice is very useful but it is not necessarily a fix for the mirroring "bug" with Yosemite.
