airdrop with yosemite on two mac's not working

After upgrading my two mac's (iMac late 2009 and MacBook Air 2012), AirDrop does not work anymore. The two mac's are in the same WLAN.

With Mavericks it worked perfectly!

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I have an answer for you. Pasted from another Apple support forum.

"Unfortunately, only 2012 Macs or newer can use Handoff and Continuity. Here's the compatibility sheet for OS X Yosemite: Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity. If you check your "System Information", it will tell you if Handoff is supported: Click on  > About This Mac > System Report… Under Hardware, click Bluetooth and check the "Handoff Supported” line."

So ... if it is 2011 machine it will say No. Very frustrating. No handoff.

Correct, our mid-2011 iMacs will not support Handoff. However, Airdrop is not a Handoff feature, and it is technically still supposed to work with Yosemite. (It worked fine for me using Mavericks.)

I knew that Handoff would not work, but I'm frustrated that a feature that *is* supposed to work now doesn't.

FYI, you can still get SMS on iMessages on your iMac, as well as receive phone calls. It's the Continuity features that aren't available to us.

I seem to be having the same problem, both Mac Air (2011) and brand new iMac have been upgraded to Yosemite, can find each other in Airdrop but when I send a file across nothing happens, it says waiting then sending with the blue circle but then nothing, file doesn't appear to be sent! Tried sending from both devices but nada!!

Anyone able to help on this please?

I had the same problems with 2 MacBook Pro (early 2013) and it also had worked with Mavericks. I managed to get it to work as intended after removing my Bluetooth headset entry from Bluetooth Preferences. Seemingly Yosemite tried to connect to this switched off headset (a relict from Mavericks), ignoring AirDrop altogether.

I am having the same issue. I have an iMac (2009) and a Macbook Pro Retina (2013) and both are on Yosemite. (before i was able to use the Airdrop function easily), now it does not work at all. I have clicked on the "search for older mac" button, which then finds my iMac, but the connection doesn't last for more than a few seconds. This is frustrating because I am used to swap files back and forth.

Apple if you are listening, please FIX this ASAP !

(also i have gone through all the steps from the bluetooth menu, rebooting.... etc etc. Nothing works.)

I have 3 macs - a mac mini and two macbook airs (all mid 2011) One of the MBAs is on Mavericks and the other two are on Yosemite. I can transfer between Yosemite and Mavericks with no problem, but cannot transfer from a Yosemite computer to another Yosemite computer. I've gone through a number of suggestions on a few different threads and I believe this is a bug. Hopefully they get it soon.

I am at a school, so I have 24 computers, a range of iMac's (from 2010-2013) and my Macbook (Late 2013). I also have two networks to choose from, one Cisco, one Airport. I also have a range of log-ins depending on the hour of the day. I am seeing that it does not matter on that age of machine. I just got a 2010 machine to airdrop, while I had a newer 2011 work one hour and not another hour. My 2013's work just fine no matter. The only thing that is different about my 2010 machine that I can think of is that the airdrop that worked was under a login that has administrator privileges but would not drop previous hours that have managed accounts. Also, more perplexing is the 2011 machine that would work for one managed account, but not the identically set up account another hour. Tried all the things above about going in and out of networks, and closing/opening airdrop. Still can't seem to get things to work 100% of the time. If you hear of an answer, please email me.

Same problem on mid-2011. It worked on Mavericks, not working on Yosemite :-(.

No options to select contacts / everyone anymore, doesn't find my iPhone or my other MacBook Air.

Opening AirDrop on newer mac didn't help (it works on that one).

C'mon Apple, the whole reason I pay a premium is that the hardware & software will "just work". It did. You broke it!

I had a problem between two 2012 MBP Retinas. The first could always see the second one in the AirDrop but the second never saw first. It looks like that if my iPhone was connected (to receive calls and SMS) to computer via bluetooth it never got time to deal with other connections. Right after i deleted my iPhones connection from Bluetooth preferences the first mac popped on the AirDrop window.

Annoying.

I have a late 2013 iMac and mid-2012 MacBook Air, both running Yosemite. The MBA recognized the iMac in AirDrop, but the iMac didn't recognize the MBA. I changed the option on bottom of the screen to allow a search for "everyone" and also clicked search for older Macs. THAT allowed both machines to recognize each other sitting only a few inches away. Hope that helps someone else.

Similar issue here. I have a Mid 2012 Macbook Air and an Early 2014 Macbook Air. I am able to see the 2014 on the 2012, but I cannot see the 2012 on the 2014 while in Airdrop.

I can send a file from the 2012 to the 2014, and when that happens, the 2012 shows up on the 2014 long enough for me to accept or decline the file. Once I make a selection either way, the 2012 disappears from the 2014. I have tried searching for older Macs from the 2014 to no avail.
