airdrop with yosemite on two mac's not working

After upgrading my two mac's (iMac late 2009 and MacBook Air 2012), AirDrop does not work anymore. The two mac's are in the same WLAN.

With Mavericks it worked perfectly!

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Same issue for me. AirDrop used to work, but now it useless. This is pretty "un-Apple". There really shouldn't be any hokus-pokus or a voodoo chant to get this to work. Here's how it should work:

- Toggle AirDrop on or off on whatever Apple device you are using.

That's it.

No logging into iCloud should be necessary, No Apple ID

From another post. Just saw this suggestion and not sure if this workaround is practical to 2011 and prior iMacs. My USB Bluetooth 4.0 dongle on the way.

This workaround works with Bluetooth LMP version 0x4. The new iMacs have 0X6. You can check your Bluetooth LMP version under System Report>Bluetooth

Summary: You don't need to replace the $80 bluetooth card in your computer. You can use a cheap USB dongle instead!

"I wanted to use the Knock to Unlock app with my late '11 MBP 15" so I could tap my iPhone to unlock my Mac's screen, so I bought a USB bluetooth 4.0/BLE donglefor under $15 at a major online retailer (I don't see any bluetooth 4.1 dongles available and don't think it's a big deal since 4.1 is so new).

To use the dongle, plug it in and follow these directions. tl;dr: download the "Hardware IO Tools for Xcode" bundle, which requires free registration to access. Get the bundle here by searching for "bluetooth" on the downloads page. Install the "Bluetooth Explorer" app by dragging it to your applications folder and run it. Hit ⌘-k or select Tools>"HCI Controller Selector" from the menubar. Change the option to the listing that isn't Apple (often the name is Broadcom, a major bluetooth chipset designer) then hit the "Activate" button and you're done! Anytime you remove the dongle and reinsert it you will need to activate it again.

I expect this will also work just fine for AirDrop since you're setting the dongle as the the system bluetooth device.

Enjoy living the future again! 🙂

P.S. Did you know our machine unofficially supports up to 16GB of RAM (double the 8GB in the specs)?!"

I have two MBP 15" Retina mid-2012 macs running Yosemite. I could not get Airdrop to work between them, but both laptops could see my iPhone in Airdrop. I tried a number of the things mentioned on this thread to no avail. My wife--far less techie than me--stumbled onto something that seems to have solved the problem. She discovered that if you click on "Bluetooth sharing" in System Preferences/Sharing, Airdrop begins to work. It still seems flaky, but this is the first time it has worked between our two laptops. So the Bluetooth Sharing had at least something to do with the problem, even if only tangentially. Both of us used Airdrop on a regular basis under Mavericks and Puma or Tabbycat or whatever the system before that was. Time for a drink to celebrate, even if it may be only a partial victory. Hope this helps.

Having played around with our Airdrop function some more, we have discovered that its better than dead, but not fully alive. We have noted that one of us can sometimes see the other, but it's not two way. Then if one or both of us open Bluetooth Preferences, suddenly both laptops can see the other. Also, when I can see my wife's laptop, but she cannot see mine, if I drag a file to her Airdrop icon, suddenly I show up in her Airdrop window...for a while. So Airdrop is still broken, just not completely dead.
