New iTunes 12, not recognizing device?

I just updated to the new iTunes 12 but whenever I plug in my iPod touch 5 gen to my computer, it doesn't seem to pop up on iTunes. I'm assuming it's because it's not being recognized? When I still had the older version, my iPod did show up on iTunes but I can't seem to get it to show up on the new one. I know that on the new iTunes, the device should show up on the left side of the screen instead of the right side, but it doesn't show up. I've tried restarting the computer and my iPod but it doesn't help. I'd really like to get this thing working as soon as possible, thanks!

iPod touch (5th generation), iOS 8.0.2

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I am having the same issue with my iPod Touch 4th Gen. on iTunes 12. I guess I have no choice but to revert back to 11, which is fine. I prefer the icon on iTunes 11 anyway. I hope Apple figures this out because the interface looks really good on iTunes 12. See kids, This is why you don't rush to get apple's newest products. You wait and see if people report bugs and issues. 🙂

Ok, so this was also being a problem for me and after fiddling around for hours I finally solved it and maybe this will help you too. If you are using Windows open the device manager and unnistall all Universal Serial Bus Drivers. Make sure iTunes is updated and restart your PC, then just plug your iPod in and see if the problem is fixed..... Good Luck 🙂

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

NEW, EASY FIX for Device not Recognized by iTunes 12...

Connect iPhone5 to computer via USB cable (device not shown in iTunes)

Select Edit, then Preferences...

Go to Advanced tab

Under "iTunes Media folder location," press Reset button

On same screen, next to Reset iTunes Store cache: press the Reset cache button

Press the Ok button at bottom of screen

Disconnect, then Reconnect USB cable to iPhone...

iPhone will immediately reappear on the icon bar 🙂
