Text message forwarding - no code on iPad or Mac

Hi,

I've just installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone and iPad. I'd like to set up text message forwarding, but when iPhone ask me to enter the code shown on my iPad or Mac - no code is showed on both.

iPad, iOS 8

What worked for me, which I NEVER found on any forum, was to check the SMS box within your messaging settings on your Mac:

Open messenger

Services

Scroll to system preferences

Shortcuts

Services

Text

Check off SMS and BOOM you're connected.

I don't know HOW I finally thought to myself that something must need to be enabled prior to syncing with my phone, but I did. I hope this works and you don't have to reset anything!

ISSUE SOLVED: The key is that all the devices need to have the mobile number checked off in Messages. On the iPad, under Settings/Messages/Send & Receive, make sure that "You can be reached by iMessage at" has the check mark next to your mobile number. Then activate "Text Message Forwarding" on the iPhone side.

Hope that helps.

This worked in terms of pairing the device:

Matt Baker PDX wrote:

  • Signed out of Messages.app on mac
  • Signed in and checked all available emails + phone number for "receive messages at"
  • On my phone, turned off iMessage, turned it back on
  • On my phone, selected all available emails + phone number for "receive messages at"
  • Tried again, it worked

No idea if the above incantation fixed it, or if it was just a matter of time.

But I just tried to send a text from my MacBook to a recipient who does NOT have iMessage, and still go the "this person is not on imessage" error. Wasn't the whole point of text forwarding to be able to communicate with people who are not on iMessage??

This basically worked for me, but I had to add in restarting my iPhone. After I did that (following your list of steps below) everything worked. I can send/receive to SMS from Mac and iPad.

  • Signed out of Messages.app on mac
  • Signed in and checked all available emails + phone number for "receive messages at"
  • On my phone, turned off iMessage, turned it back on
  • On my phone, selected all available emails + phone number for "receive messages at"
  • Tried again, it worked

This is how I got mine to work:

Added on both OS and iOS devices my iCloud address under "can be reached at" along with my phone number still checked.

I then got the verification code on the OS.

I then un-checked my iCloud address on my OS but have to leave it checked on the iOS and it works. It does not work if I un-check the iCloud address from the iOS.

Hope that helps.

That seems to have done the trick--thanks!

This solved it for me:

You have to make the option Text Message Forwarding appear in Messages iOS Settings. It will only appear if you are signed in with the same apple id address on both of your devices IN iMESSAGES specifically. So, bare with me:

On iPad: Settings>Messages>Send and Receive> check your apple id address.

On Mac: Messages>Preferences> check apple id adress

On iPhone do the same thing just sign out and sign back in with the address that you are signed in with on your iPad and/or Mac. After that i got the Text Message Forwarding option on the iPhone, turned it on, received a code on my Mac, and entered it on my iPhone.

The crucial thing for me was to log in with the exact same adress on every device, and mind that the that you are logged in iMessages can differ from the adress that you used to log into iCloud on your phone, iPad or Mac.

Please tell if it works.

I found out on another thread, the other KEY to making this work is make sure you have both your phone number AND your iCloud account email address selected as places you can receive messages. As soon as I activated the email address I got the code.

Hope that helps. I don't know if the shut off and on works or not. I tried that too and it didn't but the key was to add the iCloud account email as another place to receive messages.
