Am I the only one (still...) having issues with Bluetooth after upgrading to iOS 8.1...?

Hi fellas,

I guess my expectation level was way too high regarding this upgrade from iOS 8.0.2 to 8.1: my iPhone 6 still can't connect to Bluetooth peripherals, whatever they may be...

I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and a PC with Windows 8.1 update on it, and none of them can pair with the iPhone, no matter how hard I try.

Have you guys found workaround measures or (hopefully) solutions?

I swore today was my last day going to work with the crappy Apple-issue headphones that came with the phone, and I'd pack my faithful Sony Ericsson BT to work tomorrow... 😠

When I started this thread, I thought I'd be the odd duck, and that everybody would say, "Hey, you must have done something wrong, do this, do that, and your problem will go away!".

Well, I was mistaken, but from your replies, people, I think the Bluetooth issue on iOS 8.x can be broken down into three categories:

- That of people trying to use their iPhone running iOS 8.x in their car to take and place calls, listen to music, flirt with Siri, etc...

- That of people trying to swap files between Apple devices using AirDrop, or to use new features such as Continuity or Handoff;

- That of people trying to use Bluetooth accessories such as headphones or earphones.

Do you see other cases that don't fall into one or two of those categories?

How do you think those three categories intersect, one way or another?

What common feature or bug can affect all three, or two out of three?

How come Apple Support can sometimes solve the issue(s) by simply making the user restart their phone or reset it, or erase all settings, etc... when some other times, this won't work at all?

Ideas, anyone?

Heck, seeing the level of frustration most of us feel at the moment, I'm tempted to say, "Ideas, everyone...?"

I Agree with French Toast ref thee issue has three themes.

WRT the bluetooth not seeing other devices I have tried all the suggestions with no success:

My issue is all my Apple products can not see Bluetooth devices which they could prior to ios 8 updates.

1. Resetting iPhone.

2. Switching bluetooth off/ on.

3. Switching icloud of/ on, other combinations including bluetooth.

4. Replacing battery in my Polar H7 heartrate monitor.

5. Left bluetooth selected looking for devices overnight and still not picked any devices.

None of the above have solved the problem.

This issue is the same on my iPhone 4s, iPad 4th gen, girlfriends iPhone 4s and her iPad Mini.

A Spread of devices with the same software fault/ glitch or however you wish to discribe the systematic error of Apples programming.

I have to confirm the issue too. I have an iPhone 4s with iOS 8.1 upgraded on Tuesday 21st of October. My pairing with Polar H7 was working until Thursday, my last exercise was recorded in Polar Beat successfully. On Friday morning I switched off my iPhone and switched on back and at the evening when I run again I realized my iPhone Bluetooth does not see my Polar H7 at all. For 2 days I could not force my Polar H7 and iPhone 4s to work together.

I do not know what to do, contact Apple or contact Polar. Apple please help and repair Bluetooth technology to work with many accessories.

I Can tell you that I think some file or config is now writen to the cloud so other devices know about the blutooth devices. The sharing factor, but it may also get corrupt.

WHat at fixed all my Bt issues for car music, air drop, and hotspot was to reset ALL settings. I will caution you that when I did this on iOS 8.0.2 I did loose access to some numbers files I had on the cloud. So back up any documents your working on in the cloud first.

but to my surprise when 8.1 came out my documents were back. To late since I had already had to recreate them. But backup always fist, don't make my mistake. These things are now tied with this cloud so tight and nothing in the reset warming said anything about affecting any files in the cloud.

Now for he weird, I only reset the iPad mini retina. But after just resetting al, setting with the iPad mini eve thing else works like the iPhone BT to car stereo, and air drop between the iPad, phone and MacPro. So if you have multiple devices using the same cloud login ID you may only need to reset just one of them and test.

good luck

You got me thinking there (no small feat, I assure you...), so I checked the content of my iCloud storage (the regular 5Gb, never upgraded), on which I am sure I never tried to back-up the content of my iPhone, if only because it couldn't contain all the data I've got on it, and I found one iPhone back-up there, for a grand total of about 750Mb.

I don't know what it was doing there, or why it was that small, compared to the 12+Gb of data I have on the phone, but I deleted it. I don't know what's going to happen next, but after rebooting my iPhone, I was hoping against hope that my (our) Bluetooth issues would be solved.

And I was terribly disappointed...

This exact same behavior is happening to me but it's with my Jaybird Bluebuds X bluetooth earphones. They'll connect fine and work for a few minutes then randomly disconnect/reconnect or just disconnect entirely and I have to manually go to the iPhone 6 (running IOS 8.1) settings and force a reconnect. To make sure it's not the Jaybirds I paired them to a Nexus 5 Android smartphone and they work perfectly. Apple really needs to address this situation ASAP.

After getting annoyed I couldn't connect the Bluetooth on iPhone 6 to my car (for voice calls only) I rang the apple help line to help me resolve.

Car is a 2 year old Audi and has no issues connecting iPhone 4, 5, 5S, Samsung and LG. All voice calls are perfect and still are.... except for iPhone 6 which doesn't even connect.

The super technician I got through to on the apple help line, typical apple know it all 'confirmed' to me that it was not an issue with the new iPhone 6 or its IOS, but in fact the problem was my car. My cars Bluetooth firmware had to be upgraded. He insisted I needed to contact the Audi dealership to obtain the latest version and load it into my car.....

??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He said Apple could not make Bluetooth pair with EVERY SINGLE MANUFACTURER OUT THERE - its simply impossible and its the responsibility of the manufacturers to pair their devices (in this case my car) with their (apple) product.

I'll leave it there for this post. Its ******* me off even thinking about the conversation I had.

It sums up the arrogance of the company!

They forget consumer power! Nokia, Motorola came un stuck as are Tesco. A big name isn't big enough to ignore the consumer in the long run.

Apple you updated your iOS not Audi, Polar, Ford etc. Your systematic error (glitch, snag, bump are just slang for a programming error in the code) may be your down fall!

Samsung here I come!

I Am also having this problem. Have iPad air and iPhone 5s. Logitech k811 Bluetooth keyboard.

simply does not connect anymore to iPad, just keeps saying device is switched off or out of range. Have reset iPad settings, restarted and restored iPad to factory settings, but still nothing.

however, keyboard still connects to iPhone 5s. Cannot work out what is going on, or how to fix it.

I don't know if this helps anyone, but neither of my Bluetooth headphones that worked with my 4s worked with my new iPhone 6.

I contacted the maker and they advised the following...

Usually, to turn on and pair I would hold the on button for several seconds until the light went blue.

To force a pairing, I had to continue to hold the button down until the light went red.

The headphones now appeared on my 6 blutooth list.

This worked for both sets of headphones.

Oct 28, 2014 11:39 PM in response to jacksosi

Jacksosi, you are a genius, scratch that, you are a god! It was that simple, really, at least for me: I kept the power button pressed on my Bluetooth headset, and seconds later, voilà, my iPhone finally recognized it and paired with it...

If you ever come to Paris, the beer's on me!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! 🙂

[Paint me a happy camper]

Note: it's working for me, but it may not solve other people's issues with Bluetooth on iOS 8.1, so I'm not considering this thread as "solved".

Guys, try jacksosi's suggestion, and see it it works for you, but in the case of cars Bluetooth or Macs not pairing, I don't see how you can perform that kind of force-pair.

I've not had an iPhone since the 2 series, so I don't know how Bluetooth worked for file transfer on recent models, but it's not really a selectable option on the 6 for file transfers.

I cannot just select an image and send it to my desktop using Bluetooth for example. I'd have to send it to Flickr, or in an IM, or email, or to Facebook, or Google Drive, or my free iCloud account. I can't even send it wirelessly to iPhoto, which is a surprise. My 2011 iMac desktop picks up my iPad 2 wirelessly and iPhoto reads the images off my iPad no problem, the way Apple used to do it. But not the iPhone 6. That wants to do everything through cloud apps.

My iPhone 6 also won't talk much to my iPad 2, except as mentioned above through the cloud.

I reckon this is all about making us pay for iCloud Drive. The 5GB we get for free with iCloud is insufficient if you're using it for music, videos, photos, etc (rather than using the 1TB storage on the iMac). But if they've been chipping away at Bluetooth's functionality in the iPhone 6 to funnel us into purchasing an iCloud Drive subscription it seems quite feasible to me that they inadvertently cut out some functionality with other devices such as headsets and car systems.

Also, I've had to give permission from one Apple device to allow another Apple device to connect to iCloud. I think Scott.J.D. may be onto something that the iCloud is in the mix, but my overriding impression is they've castrated Bluetooth in the iPhone 6.

NO IPHONE EVER MADE HAS SUPPORTED PAIRED BLUETOOTH for anything other than tethering. The 6 is no exception. You can transfer files using WiFi. You can transfer files via USB using iTunes. You can transfer files using Dropbox. You can transfer files using Box.com. You can transfer images using any computer application that can download from a digital camera. You can transfer using Photo Sharing to iCloud. The iOS 8 offers more ways to transfer than have ever existed in the past. I suggest reading the manual. Or just some of the other messages in the thread you posted to. And this: Get help using Continuity with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. And this: Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices.

Oct 30, 2014 12:54 AM in response to PabloSkils

because airdrop depends on blutooth for mobile devices and apple is cautios of battery life only mobile devices that have blutooth low power 4.0 support airdrop. So yes, your iMac does meet the requirements but your iPad 2 does not. This is why file transfer or airdrop won't work for you.

Use AirDrop to wirelessly share content

As for iCloud prices apple has lowered the price now, 0.99¢ a month for 20GB which is in line to other cloud prices from other services.

for pictures this may be worth it to you, or use iTunes and the plug. Their are other app in the App Store that will make your ipad 2 into a mini web server so you can use your iMac browiser to connect to files on your iPad and pull/download them to your iMac. This would be a one time purchase for the app.

AS for music if you have a lot of music I choose to use iTunes match. I currently have over 18K songs matched in the cloud and this is separate from iCloud space. So for $24.99 any device, iphone, iPad, iMac can stream your own matched or uploaded music from the itune match cloud. The benefit is if your iPad 2 is only 16gb model you would never be able to get all your music on it. Not you can access all your music without using the space in your iPad. As an additional benefit you get commercial free music from iTunes radio when you subscribe to iTunes Match. This is cheaper than the $5 a month for commercial free music from Pandora, plus you get to store all your music and a separate clout to be accessed from any of your Apple devices.

JIst oust a few suggestions. It saved me recently. My MBPR recently had a bad upgrade to yosimite when the flash drive failed. A week later the power supply blew out in my 4TB NAS. But I still have all my music in iTunes match and once my stuff is fixed I can download all my music again. So no loss....
