No 2G,3G,4G toggle after IOS 8.1 Update

I don't understand:

What's surprising is that people who are on the 5 have the ability to choose 2g/3g/lte on ios 8.1. Atleast half a dozen people having a 5 I know have this option. No luck with the 5s or 6. Just to be doubly sure, I checked and ensured out that all of them were on the same network.

So, iPhone 4s/5 has switch but other models not.

2G, 3G, 4G LTE have nothing to do with voice calls.

They are for data.

Sorry but you are mistaken.In case of 2G Narrow Band Wireless Digital Network is used. It brings more clarity to the conversation .Both the 1G and 2G deals with voice calls and has to utilise the maximum bandwidth.
Where the option to use 2G in a weak signal area is removed the quality of voice calls suffers a lot of degrading.

It is extremely hard to modify the iPhone carrier bundles without jail breaking or breaking the signature on the carrier bundle itself. There was a way to do it on iOS 7 because iOS 7 did not completely kill AFC2, unfortunately iOS 8 did.

Because (and it should be obvious from this thread in the support forum) there has been an error somewhere along the line and apple actually released a slightly incomplete version of 8.1 to some customers. As already said above they are working on a fix, just be patient.

Firstly, although the first line AppleCare assistants will not know that this is a problem in India, rest assured that a fix will be released globally, not just regionally. Apple already know this isn't just a regional issue.

Secondly Mike, the only correlation so far is that anyone I have heard from who is affected, including those working at Apple, are using devices that run on an A7 processor chip or higher. This also means they have a motion coprocessor in as well. The means of installing has no bearing, otherwise the issue would simply be fixed by performing a DFU restore to your device using a Mac/PC which from experience in this individual case is nothing but an exercise in wasting your own time. Rest assured as soon as I hear more, I'll share with you all.

Its carrier dependant, I have a 4G toggle which is what I had before and with iOS 7. So if your network does not support it, it wont be there. Thats how I read it.

My first suggestion (given I have been attacked by others on another thread in the community) would be to get in touch with Proximus to rule out that they have not limited this option themselves, however given you are within the EU I would guess this is unlikely. Secondly I would suggest that as you are using an iPhone 5S your issue is similar to mine in that it has been an oversight in the software rollout and has something to do with devices running the A7 chipset or above. Either way if your carrier have not limited the settings, then you will (like the rest of us) have to wait for Apple to get to the cause of this issue, albeit a bug in the software or in the carrier settings packages (which are all signed by Apple anyway). Sorry I can't be of more help at the moment 😟

if you're on a carrier who have launched 4G then tough, you're not getting the new toggles.

What about same carrier and same model iPhone? Why switch presence only on one of them?

Ok here is the solution. I Have tried and tested. 100% working. There is no issues with the ios. It is just the carrier update which is causing the problem. According to Airtel, there will be only 3G and 4G from 2015 onwards in India. So they have jump in front of time and updated their carrier setting with the new one. And it affected the battery life very badly. What i have done is port my number to Vodafone. And everything become normal. 2G/3G toggle is back, battery even lasts for atleast 2 days. This is the ultimate solution for this. 🙂

AppleCare were really helpful, the fact that I had pre-empted all the standard troubleshooting tips and saved them the time of having me do this means it has been flagged to the necessary departments already. From another post on the forums I have seen, it is also affecting users of the iPhone 6, so not just down to the A7 chip. I would be willing to put a lot of money on 8.1.1 coming out in the next 48 - 72 hours....

the carrier settings DOES change the celular menu. It's not just the hotspot feature, but also the ability to edit APN settings (inside Celulwr menu) and the 4G toggle. I remember even before 4G, when it was a 3G toggle, changing the sim in my phone from one carrier to another would hide / show this option. I'm positive that the carrier settings can do that (I've used many different carries around the world).

however, per your description, it looks like it's not the problem then. If you saw devices on the same carrier, but got different options, then I'd rule out the carrier settings. I like your theory about A7 and up - maybe a 64-bit bug? Could explain why 32 bit devices are working.

After switching over to iPhone 6 from Nexus i was waiting for 8.1 as many forums has blogs of 2G/3G toggle option to be there in 8.1 update.

Checked the update today morning and it was given there that 2G/3G/4G option will be there. But still the same thing after update. How can apple list it if it wasn't there in the update.

I Have the same problem on my iPhone 6 from T-Mobile... I just upgraded to iOS 8.1 yesterday and have been waiting for the toggle 2G 3G switch... I've been reading all of the comments on here, and yes I think it's a problem in the update... I think that it's really weird that some people have this feature but some don't. It's good that apple knows about this problem and thank you for keeping us updated on what applecare says.
