iOS 8.1 always in extended coverage

I updated to iOS 8.1 earlier today and ever since then I have been on "extended" coverage instead of verizon. I went to places that I go to every day and I never had verizon and it has been about 9 hours. I did a factory reset but that didn't work. How do I fix this? I don't want to be roaming all the time which is what it seems that it is.

I'm having the same issue, 5s, Verizon. I talked to Apple and Verizon yesterday, surprisingly Verizon was more help than Apple. Verizon ran every possible test and even checked out my account. The area I'm in has plenty of towers and LTE service, the Verizon rep confirmed this, saying there is no reason I should be on extended. Apple escalated me to a Senior advisor last night, who instructed me to factory reset as a new phone, which did not resolve the issue. From what little contact I have had with the Senior Advisor for Apple today, she is still adamant that this is a Verizon issue. However, my phone was on Verizon networks leading up to the completion of the iOS 8.1 update. Waiting to get a call from the Senior Advisor sometime this evening. :/

So now my phone is selectively ignoring incoming calls. The apple senior advisor tried calling me twice today, my phone never rang once. I was finally notified at 8:00pm that I had 2 voicemails from the advisor. She has emailed me to let me know she was calling, but she doesn't seem to understand that my phone is not picking up the correct network. She still believes this is a carrier issue, though if I hadn't updated to 8.1 I doubt I would be having this issue. So tomorrow, I will be making a trip to the Apple store to try and get something done. :/

Ever since updating to 8.1, I've had the same issue.

In the 9 years of having verizon, I had NEVER seen or heard of "Extended". I had to research online to see what it meant. Therefore, it HAS to be an issue with the 8.1 update. I've contacted Verizon with no luck on their end.

I notice that my battery is draining faster also, possibly since the network is constantly switching between verizon and extended for no good reason.

Everyone with Verizon is having the same issue with the 8.1 Only Verizon though. Extended is the roaming service and it drains your battery incredibly fast. My dad and I have both been on the phone with VZW for 2 days now to no avail. Basically their answer is it's a bug and there's not a fix. I HOPE that just means there's not a fix RIGHT NOW and that they're at least working on fixing it.

Also, my 5 and my dad's 5S work fine on WiFi but when they're just using the cellular "Extended" connection we aren't even able to get LTE. Every once in awhile 3G but mostly just 1x service. It's the pits. We're in IL and FL respectively.

Hope this gets fixed soon and we can all have function phones again! This might be the last straw for us as Verizon customers....

Here is what I’m thinking:

For some using iOS 8.1 on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ on Verizon when their network name switched to “Extended” after the OS updated they were able to follow mauricefromtampa’s advice of:

Go to settings-->Cellular-->Enable LTE--> choose Voice and Data

And it re-identified the network name as Verizon. I’m thinking this works as the iPhone 6 and 6+ are able to use Verizon’s VoLTE service.

However, when I attempted that same setting on an iPhone 5s to correct my newfound “Extended” issue with iOS 8.1 I did not see a setting for LTE: Voice and Data just “Enable LTE.” (Below “Enable LTE” there was Roaming: Voice Roaming & Data Roaming) I think this is due to an issue with the Carrier Settings within the phone. Supposedly the iPhone 5s can do VoIP (VoLTE) phone calls, but Verizon hasn’t enabled it, likely so they can push more new phone sales.

Anyway, my guess is that both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 are sharing the same carrier software when maybe they shouldn’t or they just need to update it to support the Verizon nuances of VoLTE between the Verizon VoLTE enabled iPhones (6/6+) and the non-VoLTE enabled iPhones (5/5s).

So far my iPhone states its carrier as “Verizon 18.0” with the network of “Extended” in Settings --> General --> About. I’m left to assume the phone is indeed on Verizon’s network even though I am outside of my home area. I have nationwide coverage (it has always said “Verizon” at the top while traveling) and I’m thinking a carrier update will help revert the network name back to "Verizon” even while outside of a home area.

This is a carrier issue I believe – Verizon needs to issue an update.

So far I haven’t noticed any issues with my service, in fact I ran a speed test while it said “Extended” and I was able to achieve over 80 mbps down and 30 mbps up while on LTE. For those speeds I think it could only be on Verizon’s “XLTE” network using the AWS bands.

After two days on the phone with Verizon (Vzw) tier 2 support and Apple support I was able to get an answer, and get this fixed. There are some known issues with the Vzw iPhones staying in extended mode - so check these first! This is a very important issue to get fixed because until you do you are stuck on other cell operators towers and not Vzw and you will not get high definition calling!

1) IMPORTANT- If you are using a Vzw Network Extender in your home or office, since update of ios 8.1 you will always see extended mode on your phone, no matter what, for now. (4g HD calling not yet available through Vpn tunnel)

2) 8.1 apple update defaulted all the iPhone cellular mode LTE setting to data only. to fix, go to settings> Cellular > Enable LTE > Select Voice & Data. a check mark should appear withing 30 seconds and Verizon will reappear on iPhone. If the check mark appears you are now back on Vzw cell network and have High Def calling. If not - complete a "hard reset on the iPhone" Do this by holding down your power button and home button until you see the apple logo on the screen, This actually disconnects the batter on the phone and forces the sim card to reach out to the towers and reinitialize settings.

If this does not work, toggle on and off Airplane Mode

If that does not work; go to settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings

Now if after all that your check mark does not appear or you get a pop box on the phone that says "call Vzw to enable LTE calls" then here is the solution:

Call Vzw, have them add the following 3 codes on your account:

A) Advanced Calling 1.0 - Vzw Feature Code 81143

B) High Def Voice - Vzw Feature Code 81158

C) High Def Access - Vzw Feature Code 81186

If you give the Vzw rep the three feature codes it will make your life easier because this is a very new issue!

Now you can hard reset and select LTE Voice and Data and get back on the Vzw Network

2 days and 4 hours on the phone with both companies solved this issue, I am not that smart, just pushy to get my new HD calling that I bought the dam iPhone 6 for! Cheers! gene

Note: When doing all this you must be in good range of a Vzw cell tower and have at least two bars of signal on your phone, if not go outside.

I appreciate all of that help, but...

When I updated to 8.1, my iPhone did NOT reset to data only... The LTE setting still said voice and data..

Likewise, I have done a hard reset, airplane mode, reset network settings, etc... and my iPhone still says extended..

This NEVER happened before the 8.1 update... I don't know what else to do because obviously something is definitely screwed up since the 8.1 update.

Make sure there is a checkmark next to voice and data when you select it and not just a spinning circle - Some accounts, especially Verizon business accounts need to have the following codes added before you can do this:

Call Vzw, have them add the following 3 codes on your account:

A) Advanced Calling 1.0 - Vzw Feature Code 81143

B) High Def Voice - Vzw Feature Code 81158

C) High Def Access - Vzw Feature Code 81186

Vzw will begin checking accounts but it will take some time so call and make sure those feature codes are on. just dial 611 on your phone

And make sure you are not using a network extender, if so turn it off or go outside and I assume you are in a Vzw area and not roaming

This sounds promising, however, many of us have this "Extended" issue and we are on the iPhone 5/5s. The 5/5s is not enabled by Verizon or Apple to do Advanced Calling 1.0/VoLTE/VoIP. I don't see how those Verizon feature codes could affect it, assuming Verizon would even attempt to enable them for an iPhone 5/5s. Any thoughts for LTE iPhones older than the 6/6 Plus?

Im am not sure either but I have six iphones on my business account. One of them a 5. this fixed the issue and the Verizon Tier 2 support tech who was very knowledgeable asked me to post this info and the feature codes as this is a new issue and the solution was not well covered in their manuals. It took me the last two days to resolve this and only because last night I called apple and a Apple Tech Support rep knew the issue because he just changed jobs and used to work for Verizon as a tier 2 rep. So today after going through two reps who said "we never heard of this issue" I got to the Tier 2 help folks and was luck enough to get someone who knew what to do. This was today, Sunday 10/26/14 so they are aware and are available to help. good luck! gene
