iTunes 12 Tagging Issues

Quite a few changes have been made concerning tagging options and accessibility in iTunes 12—for the worse. While all traditionally available fields were still available in iTunes 11—regardless the media kind—, the new iTunes update removes many of them. Most options have been adjusted to better fit the respective media. And even though I'd agree that Episode # doesn't make much sense for a record, I would still use most of the remainingvalues for most of my media.

Batch tagging your metadata has basically become impossible for most tasks. And that's not just a little annoying—it's a pain. In fact, iTunes has become somewhat useless over night. Here are just a few examples of what I'm missing:

Maybe unlike others, I've always used the Grouping field for Movies (I group film series, e.g. Planet of the Apes). It's not possible anymore. Grouping has become unavailable for Movies in iTunes 12 (apart from editing the field row by row in List View). Yes, there still is List View—the only good news so far. I also set Track # (1 of 1) and Disc # (1 of 1) for Movies. They're gone, too, meaning I would have to open each movie separately in Subler or iDentify and set those values manually—four times each item in this example. Have you ever tried doing that for a couple of hundred movies?

Maybe unlike others, I've always used the Description, Show, and Episode ID fields for Music (I fill in album release notes, dates and venues for live recordings, among other things). It's not possible anymore. Description, Show, Episode ID, and many other fields have become unavailable for Music in iTunes 12.

This list goes on and on . . .

Oddly enough, I haven't even been able to batch tag the fields that iTunes has left us to play around with. When trying to edit the genre for a bunch of movies today, the error message was "Your selection contains more than one kind of media." (see image), which is, of course, also not true.

I wonder how other iTunes power users—and I really don't like that phrase—are dealing with this, and I'm looking forward to reading about your first impressions, experiences so far, as well as sharing reasonable workarounds.

As I said earlier in this thread (Tagging working differently in iTunes 12 ?): It more and more looks like they're trying to get rid of power users in order to make us buy stuff from the iTunes store instead of managing our own media with their software.

PS: Ripping a CD has become painfully slow, taking almost 20 minutes per album. But I'm hoping this is an issue Apple is actuallygoing to fix soon, while I'm not so sure about the others.User uploaded file

I haven't checked yet, but it seems that Apple may have heard us. Here's what comes with the latest update, iTunes 12.1.2:

Mac

This update improves support for syncing photos to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch from the new Photos app for OS X. In addition, this update also adds several refinements to the Get Info window and improves overall stability.

Windows

This update adds several refinements to the Get Info window and improves overall stability.

Can anyone confirm the "refinements to the Get Info window" part? For better or worse . . .

The new iTunes is killing me. What in the world were they thinking???

I am a DJ and I have spent years tagging and categorizing over 24,000 songs in iTunes, only to have nonsensical programming error eliminate the possibility of managing, searching, or even inserting my tags in the Comments section in one forced upgrade.

There are so many idiotic glitches, it is truly shocking. Is Apple not hiring professional developers? I can't imagine they would allow this level of incompetency.

I am furious with the iTunes developers over this. Time for a competitor to rise up, as Apple is losing ground with old time loyalists like myself. They had 25 years of loyalty with me. No more.

Well, your frustration is understandable. I solved all issues by downgrading iTunes. Still, let me know if you should ever stumble upon a worthy and compatible competitor.

Put your display into a list style view using the option at the top right.

You can then enable the Comment column, or any other columns you want access to.

Click twice, slowly (not a double-click), just inside the left edge of the field that you want to edit, type, and press enter.

This demo is for the Artist field in Movies, but the principle is the same.

Perhaps, but the original workarounds for Get Info in 12 stopped working, and there are plenty of posts from people complaining that there are fields they cannot edit in the new-style editor. Using the list view is a viable alternative in some cases. Batch editing can be done with AppleScript if needed. I've no objection to the new form of the editor, but it wasn't necessary to remove functions from it. 😐

Only viable solution is the one below posted earlier by mathmat.

I multi-select films, then set Kind to MusicVideo, edit the grouping tag, then set Kind back to Film, then hit OK.

I'm using the grouping to store Watched + Fav ( per person) tags e.g: "Watched JS DS" then I can do Smart Playlists for just JS stuff or DS stuff. By using grouping it's embedded within the files metadata so is preserved outside of iTunes.

I'm migrating away from iTunes + HomeSharing which works OK on AppleTV but hasn't worked properly on iPhone/iPad for years, unless you have a tiny library (10 mins spinning circle to load = unusable/joke!). It's Kodi for me now via code I wrote to get all MY embedded Metadata into it.

As far as the Description field, if you don't want to add a script or don't know how to I found a pretty quick and fairly easy work-around. Click Get Info for the file that you want to edit "Description" for. Then change the "kind" from "music" to "podcast" and the "Description" field will come up and you can edit it. Then go and change it back from "podcast" to "music."
