iCloud Photo Library (and the whole Drive) slow beyond unusable

iCloud Photo Library (and the whole iCloud Drive experience) is so slow, it's beyond unusable.

I fully understand the iCloud Photo Library is still in Beta phase. I also understand that during my Apple devices usage over the years I have accumulated about 4000 images and thus the process takes a little bit longer. There might have also been some migration issues with my account behind the scenes over the years which makes it a bit more complicated than the case with just a fresh new iCloud account on a new device.

However, all taken into account, my iCloud experience (and not just with the Photo Library) is really a far cry from Apple events presentations. Every step involving upload and download to/from iCloud is so unbelievably slow (I'm not talking seconds or minutes but sometimes hours) it's almost unusable as a documents storage, let alone for serious work use.

First of all the setup:

- I have iPhone 5S, iPad Air and late 2013 MacBook Pro, all using the same iCloud account. Latest iOS (now 8.1) and Yosemite.

- I have broadband internet connection via fibre optic with 25Mbit bandwidth without any connectivity issues (regularly tested)

- My home WiFi is running on 802.11ac with capabilities well exceeding the maximums of all the devices, all on the same SSID, working like a clockwork, no issues

Now, the problems:

- I have enabled iCloud Photo Library on both iPhone and iPad. The whole process of migrating Photos into iCloud took best part of 3 days (!?) to finish to a state when I can say it's all more or less synchronised between devices. During the whole time both devices had the whole bandwidth available. When I was monitoring the traffic on the router, both devices were hardly using any for most of the time. Apple Services Status website showed all services as green. Sometimes it went completely dead for hours, the only action that seemed to resume anything happening was turning the WiFi off and on again, the device restart, sometimes only reset. Why are not the files synchronised immediately and continuously?

- After the library was finally synchronised, I've tried to take a new picture on the iPhone and wait for it to appear on iPad for further edits. Only once it was a remotely quick action (about a minute), most of the time this simple task took good part of an hour, sometimes more. With regards to the data amount transferred, this should be a few seconds job at the most, I have absolutely no idea why it could be taking so long. There's been nothing else using the bandwidth on the devices itself or my broadband connection (all monitored per device and per services directly on the router). Both devices were simply not transferring any data to or from iCloud, despite connected to an idle connection, anything using internet on them was perfectly fine, internet SpeedTest was also showing full bandwidth available.

- The same problems occur when using iWorks for creating and editing documents. Considering the miniature size of the files, the action should be instant, yet again, it seems to be completely stuck, sometimes requiring the restart or a reset of the device to resume working properly.

I have tried everything, including removing my Apple ID from the devices and then adding it again, when I've noticed these problems for the first time with iWorks. Nothing seems to help.

Any ideas what might be wrong? Anyone having the same experience?

WHY hasn't Apple responded to this. This is the most absolute BS thing in the world to have no ability to "push" a photo to iCloud and instead you have to wait and wait and wait for iCloud to sync whenever it feels like.

I take a Movie on my phone. NO feature for rotating the video. So I have to send to the Apple Computer to try to do it. So I wait to see if the movie uploads. NOT UPLOADING TO ICLOUD. I look for a "Send/Receive" type feature. Nothing. You cant search the internet on this topic because all that comes up relates to just setting up the library syncing.

So I try to air drop the movie. No email has been sent. I JUST WANT TO ROTATE A %#^$&%* MOVIE. Why is this such a stroke-inducing activity. Not my movie, nor any of my photos I took in the last ten minutes are uploading to icloud. WHERE IS THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION. THERE HAS TO BE A WAY TO PUSH A PHOTO TO ICLOUD OR PRESS A BUTTON TO SYNC. Why apple. WHYWHYWYWYWYWYWYH

Latest tests:

- Took a picture on iPhone. Nothing happened. Closed the Camera app, nothing happened. Opened Photos App in the Photos tab - it automatically started "Uploading 1 photo", moments later on iPad started "Downloading 1 photo" followed by "Synchronised Now". So far so good, even though not ideal - no idea why I have to trigger the sync manually by opening up Photos. Did some edits on iPad, those shown up moments later on iPhone and vice versa, as it should be.

- Then I took 4 pictures in the Camera App. Nothing happened. Opened Photos app in Photos tab again - it's showing "Uploading 4 Photos" for last half an hour. On iPad, it shows "Updated xx Minutes Ago" without any change. Nothing appears on iPad. Clearly stuck for no reason. Nothing helps. Tried closing Photos App, switching WiFi off and on, still stuck, data transfer indicator (circle in status bar on top) running around, yet router clearly shows no data flowing in and out of iPhone (other apps work ok).

Switched iPhone on and off and voila - "Uploading 4,3,2,1", then "Updated Just Now". iPad starts "Updating..." but nothing happens. No update, no data flowing, no pictures. Switched iPad off and on, transfer starts, synchronised.

Repeated a few times, same results. You get the picture. Useless.

Same problem, 3 days and it's only uploaded around 1,000 of 5,000+ photos. This is with constant WiFi connection throughout the day and night. seems to me like the only time syncing is happening is when I have the photos app opened (which I am not going to do for 3 days straight)

And backing up that many photos in addition to everything else on my iPhone to the cloud takes roughly 2-3hrs, definitely not an internet connection issue.

I had the bright idea of enabling it on my iPad, and it's been 2 days, and has only downloaded about 700 videos and photos.

I have one large video (about 45 minutes), which finally uploaded.

When I play it in iCloud.com, it shows a low resolution video. If I try to download it (transfer rate stays around 300 kb/s), it stalls and dies at about 130MB. If it try to resume, I get a message saying: "The requested URL was not found on this server".

I have a very fast and reliable internet connection with Comcast Xfinity, over 30 Mb/s download and over 6 Mb/s upload, so it's not a connectivity issue.

I have already tried clearing up DNS Cache to make sure I'm connecting to the current servers. Nothing else to tweak around here.

Something else I don't like is that t won't upload photos and videos over Cellular.

Apple needs to speed up iCloud.com, as it's currently unusable. I take a lot of videos with my iPhone and iPad, and I was hoping this would help me keep recording without having to download what I have filmed, saving me time. But I guess I was wrong.

Now I have a low resolution version of my videos on my iPad, and can't retrieve the high resolution video from iCloud.com.

I'm going to disable it now, piece of cr@p! and going back to using Dropbox for this purpose.

After few days of trying to live with it and waiting for the problem to improve while staring at Apple Services website happily constantly showing "all green" I am now much less hesitant to call this issue

absolutely service critical problem.

It's not only Photos in iCloud, it's not only Handoff in iWork, it's the whole iCloud Drive, that has such a poor performance, that it's completely useless.

Any application trying to access iCloud, even for totaly miniature files, takes ages to perform data access, while being stuck in the process, totally unresponsive.

Apple, please do wake up, iCloud is fundamentally central to your future, it should be totally fluid and quick, this is shockingly bad.

About iCloud Photos Library Beta, it is yet more a preview than a beta

Do not rely on it to store full res Photos/Videos even if you have a 200GB iCloud Store

Major Bugs (according to help description of fonctionality):

-only IOS8 Photos manually edited are uploaded full res from IOS ! If you do not edit you get low res photos in iCloud Library

-uploaded 1080p videos from IOS are converted to 720p 5mb/s as in existing Photo Sharing and not originals.

-No upload button in web iCloud photo Client on MAC for many (all?) users

Also very slow and very often stuck doing nothing.

I am afraid we would have to wait for next year... or later

What is unbelievable is that there are no information at all by Apple about what should word on the beta, and known problems, nor any release date, that is definitely not a beta, just powerpoint preview. I am very angry after all the fuss they have done around "new" iCloud and my 200GB monthly payment that I cannot use.

Not only all the obvious iCloud problems, but when my 5s (8.1) is updating or uploading photos to iCloud Photo Library and appears to be stalled, both the App Store updates and iTunes WiFi syncing are unable to do any network operations. Apps don't update and WiFi syncing doesn't work. This happened to me for 3 days straight, and I thought it was just some strange App Store problem. Disabling iCloud Photo Library (Beta) restores all functionality.... but no more Photo Library photos on my phone. This is consistently repeatable. And I have fewer than 600 photos in the library.

I bought a new iPad Air 2 and started to transfer all data from my old iPad Air to the new one And from the already updated iCloud photo.

The iCloud synchronization takes ages. First, all photos are downloaded and then they are uploaded again. Days and days of transfer of data which is already in the iCloud since my old iPad Air did already its work.

I Really do hope that Apple is updating this service quickly

Status indicator is a really good idea. I think the prominence of iCloud in Apple's services now warrants something like this, perhaps even in the status bar (download and upload indicated). It should be transparent, running in background, but with the amount of data, connectivity issues and number of users globally, it will hardly ever be.

Agreed. It's really bad. Pages documents randomly fail to sync on various devices. In other words, a document may sync between the Mac and the iPhone, but not the iPad. The next day the iPhone will have the sync issues. Apple just can't get this right. Amazingly, Dropbox (with 300 million users and about 600 employees) makes it look easy.
