iPad Air 2 touch sensitivity problems

I purchased and iPad Air 2 two days ago. I noticed the screen had sensitivity problems around the outer edges which were apparent when trying to use the keyboard. Keys such as "Q," the microphone button and then pressing "done" as well as the character keyboard button and switching between various keyboards, etc. where not responding well to touch. I exchanged it for another one the next day, brought it home and it exhibited the same problems. Brought the second one back the store and the two sales associates noted the same thing only they had not come across this before. They brought out another one which I tried at the store and it had the same unresponsive key problems. Each iPad exhibited different degrees of this problem. Bouncing between keys "q" "a" "z" in rapid succession or trying to select the different character keyboards at the very bottom of the screen made the problem. Sometimes trying to compose an email or deleting one using the icons at the top of the screen exited the same problems. That was three iPad Air 2's. Several demo units exhibited the same problem while several others did not. Is this a defective manufacturing issue or a potential design flaw associated with the new laminated layers of screen?

The reset worked for me, also. I'm on my second iPad air 2 and was wanting to give up on it. This keyboard issue was frustrating and really ******* me off. I worked with a senior tech at Apple and he was unaware of this fix. I actually got tired of working with him and turned the first one in. As time was passing I was thinking that I was going to return this and go back to the iPad air (original). But, this did the trick for me. Thank you very kindly for sharing your fix and good luck to everyone experiencing this issue. Happy Thanksgiving To all.

Thank You so much for posting your findings. I was having the same problem with my iPad air 2 and after paying almost $800 for the new unit it was very frustrating having the keyboard sensitivity issues. We tried what you had suggested and sure enough....it fixed the problem. THANK YOU for taking the time to post this. We truly appreciate it 🙂.

Hmmm I bought the new iPad Air 2 as soon as it came out and have also noticed this touch sensitivity issue. I use it every day and probably started noticing the problem about a month ago now. The severity varies, sometimes it seems fine and other times it's really annoying and almost unuseable! Originially when I got it I do not remember any issues.

Sometimes I find when I wipe the screen with a moist towel it temporarily gets slightly better. Lately I find if I take my iPad Air 2 OUT of its $99 iPad Air 2 Case it seems to work completely fine again. I wonder if it is getting touch interference from somewhere for some reason? I have not tried the reset all button yet... can't be bothered at the moment.

I have both an iPad Air 1 and an older iPad (3rd generation) which I use everyday too and they have never had any problems with touch sensitivity ever!

If sensitivity issue is only when you are trying to type or use your iPad Air 2 while it is plugged in and charging, Try what GS32 Posted regarding the USB plug. It actually works. For some weird reason Apple decided to lockdown the other cords or USB plugs with the new iPhone 6 & the new iPad Air 2. You can only use the actual Apple USB chargerr that came with your iPad air 2. If you are using another cord to be plugged into the apple USB charger and your iPad Air 2, the cord has to be Apple MFI Certified. We tested this and sure enough....it worked. Just make sure you're using Apple USB charger in the wall and have an apple MFi certified 8 pin charging cable. Thanks to GS32 for posting because we had same frustrating problem & was ready to take new iPad back, but this actually worked and have not had the problem since. Hope this helps others out there too 🙂

I only use genuine Apple adapters and cables... I think I am using the original one that came with this ipad which is the 10W one? Not sure if I have mixed it up since I have so many devices and charging cables... I know I have multiple 12W adapters and was surprised to find a 10W one amongst them now.

The issue is mainly noticed during playing a game that involves swipes and taps. When I'm trying to drag a slider by swiping it stops part of the way as if it thinks I let go when in fact I haven't. But it also affects typing as some of the taps are not responding well.

When the sensitivity issue is noticed if I take it out of the case it seems to get better. It could be that it's not the act of removing the case but the fact I am forced to unplug it when I do remove it from the case that is making the difference? Sometimes I notice the device is very hot when I am removing it from the case so I wonder if overheating could be an issue? Or perhaps the case is putting pressure on the screen somewhere?

A new iOS version just came out since my last post and I installed it. Everything seems normal when I am playing the game so far.

Another thing I am currently noticing is when I hold the backspace button to delete text in this post it does not delete text smoothly. The speed at which it deletes text is erratic, sometimes fast and sometimes slow and sometimes stops. But if I switch to notepad it is completely smooth and after a few seconds deletes everything. So that is probably normal.

Update 12/10/14 The recover worked for a period and gradually the issue has returned. It's not apparent in all apps or web sites,ee bb it just did it there. The issue still exists. Sometimes there are touch issues with screen where you almost have to punch it to make it work. You may be using a web site where you need to ppl just did it again. Need to press an "Enter" box, for example, and it just won't work. you try repeatedly, frustrated until finally it enters. Bottom line is I'm still having major issues with this keyboard and want my old iPad Air (original version) back.

Did everything: reset settings, complete factory reset (several times). Went to the apple store in the end. There they completely reinstalled the software.

Unfortunately this didn't resolve these more than annoying touch issues!! Strange thing is that my new ipad mini 3 has exact the same problems. It is most noticeable on safari website where you can scroll through pictures by tapping on eihter site of the pic. It works for a few pics, but then the screen freezes. Even in such a way you can't scroll the screen anymore.

The air 2 is fast and looks/feels great, but this touch issue makes it an almost impossible tablet! I'm an apple addict, so I trust Apple wil fix this.

I run ios 8.1.2 on both the Air 2 en Mini 3. Done all the reset options and have the software reinstalled by Apple in the apple store.

Has anyone have any suggestions??

I'll jump back in to report additional experiences with this issue. I found reset settings worked very well for several weeks and then the issue slowly came back. After reading several other posts about 3rd party power supplies possibly causing problems I experimented with this also. The power supply that came with my iPad Air 2 was still the box since I had initially used the one from my previous iPad. So before using it, I labeled it for future identification. When using the brand new power supply and cord that came with the iPad Air 2, I still experienced the touch sensitivity issues. Since I mostly play games with the Air 2, that is where I notice the problem most frequently. I could be playing along with it plugged in and my swipes and presses start acting up in the game, I immediately unplug the power cord and my controls start working again so I'm convinced this has some bearing on the problem. Almost like the act of keeping the iPad charged up is interfering with the screen interface. So, if I don't have the Air 2 plugged in while I'm using it then I don't experience the issues. I hope this is some kind of firmware issue that Apple will acknowledge and address soon.
