iPad Air 2 freezes from time to time

I had an iPad Air (1) for a year or so .... it never froze up. I moved to a new iPad Air 2 when it came out. It freezes up from time to time. Maybe a couple times a day, then I might go day or so when it doesn't freeze, and then it will do it again. The screen just freezes. I have to reboot it each time it does this. And there's no discernible pattern to what might be triggering it. It can happen in any app, or when I tap on any app.

I know I can try doing a restore (I'd rather not... I really hate doing that... takes forever). I'll do a restore if this becomes a real problem. It's interesting that for the year I owned the iPad Air (1), it NEVER froze -- it was rock solid. In the couple weeks I've had the iPad Air 2, it's freezed up on me probably about 10 times. I'm hoping that perhaps an update will address this (unless, of course, I have a lemon).

I'm wondering if any one else has encountered this. Thanks....

Yes, it has happened to me as well. Had my Air 2 about 2 wks and it has happened 3 times...random...just locks up...could not even do a hard reset. After a few minutes the white Apple logo suddenly appeared and then I was good to go again. Never happened in the 3 yrs I had an iPad 2. Also one of those who are experiencing the loss of WiFi when the Air 2 goes to sleep mode (Re: iPad Air 2 WiFi Issues).

I had told myself that I would never purchase a Version 1.0 and let the early adopters find all the bugs and defective hardware. I decided that having a faster processor, AC wifi and 64GB was worth it vs. Air (first generation) at a lower price. Hopefully these glitches are short term inconveniences that can be fixed with iOS 8.1.1 or 8.2.

I have a similar issue, but it's when my iPad Air 2 is "asleep" - pressing the home button does not wake it up. It may take a min or so before it finally does, and that's after several button presses. It doesn't do it all the time, and I cannot discern a pattern for when it happens. Very frustrating after having almost zero issues with prior iPads.

The thing is, I'm reluctant to return it because the screen is absolutely perfect 🙂 and I've already returned one Air 2 due to a pink band at the bottom of the screen.

You are correct, my iPad Air has stopped working entirely since upgrading to OS 8, was crashing and freezing and the screen was flickering and now has become unusable. Does anyone know if it is possible for software to corrupt the RAM? During restore attempts iTunes read the iPad as having 11.7 gig capacity, then changing to 14.91 gig capacity, then back to 11.7 gig capacity. One user here reported that Apple told them that he had a "firmware problem" and they wanted $250 to fix it as he was now out of warranty.

Same problem. I've owned the iPad Air2 for only 3 days and nothing but glitches, big time freezing. Last night a black screen totally frazzled me. I did a forced restart and it's been sort of okay. However, my iphone 4S still uses iOS7 and so I'm unable to sync properly. I was warned NOT to upgrade to iOS8 on my iPhone yet as there are so many bugs and there's NO going back once I do unlike the old iOS7 back to iOS6.

I'm seriously considering returning my new iPad Air2 unit. Too much trouble. My old iPad never gave me an ounce of trouble. This one.....BIG TIME!!

I've experienced the black screen freeze-up about 3-4 times over the past 2 weeks. When I open the smart cover, the screen is just black. I have to do a hard restart. Then it comes back and seems fine. I figure the black screen freeze-up issue is the same as the one I originally reported (and others have experienced, too) -- my iPad Air 2 is simply freezing up, and this time is chose to do it when then it was asleep and the screen was black.

I can go days and not experience the freeze-up problem. Then, I'll get 2-3 in one day, and then it's fine again for days. It's frustrating, especially since very other iPad I've owned (and I've owned them all except the iPad 4) never froze up.... they have all been rock solid. The iPad Air 2 so far? Not so much. I'm also experiencing the wifi issues others have reported. From time to time, my iPad Air 2 will lose its connection to my home wifi (I have an Airport Extreme base station.... older model). The other iPad in the house -- my former iPad Air (1) that now belongs to my partner -- it doesn't experience any of these problems.

I sure hope that these iPad Air 2 issues can be addressed via a software update. I'd hate to learn that it's the hardware that's wonky.

Thank you for your response, Brian. I've been so frustrated with this iPad. Sadly, I sold my old iPad yesterday so there's no going back but this new iPad Air2 can go back. I am going to sit tight for one more week anticipating that Apple will recognize this global problem and fix the bugs. I'm planning to travel during the holiday season and take my iPad with me which I usually do but as of today, it looks doubtful that it will be going along with me. Boohoo!

I Have the same problem iPad air 2. 64gb gold version.

the first air I had kept crashing on certain app purchases, replaced it, it was fine.

needed a larger memory version so got the air 2... It freezes up at random, and turns off with a soft static noise if I touch the power button, then it's bricked for at least two-five minutes.

EAch time im worried its bricked.

IT does come back after a few minutes, and not in a way that it seems like its rebooted, more like it went into screen lock mode... Happens most frequently when switching to the chrome browser... Bit happens other times too.

After one week of owning an iPad Air2 and putting up with freezing and Mail and Safari crashes, I returned it and bought another from a different store. It's been a week since I've had the second iPad Air2 and it's been just fine. I can't help wondering if it was a coincident that when I brought the second iPad Air2 home and connected it to my computer and iTune, there was a new software update (8.1.1?) which I installed. I'm of the belief that this update corrected all the software issues that the new iPad Air2 was experiencing
