iPhone 6 plus messages app freezing crashing iOS 6.1

When opening sms or iMessage messages, screen will regularly pause for 10-15 seconds on a blank white screen to reload content, or if a lock screen shortcut takes me directly to the messages app it will freeze with just the last text bubble visible (no previous messages, no keyboard) for 10-15 seconds before loading.

Resetting iMessage from off to on, and resetting network settings has shown very limited success, but only for a matter of minutes before reverting. Often after 10-15 seconds, the app will crash before reloading.

I have also attempted to do a factory reset and then restore from backup (of the 6 plus) and the problem persists.

I have had the same issue with my iPhone 6 Plus. Have tried restoring, but not a factory reset. I suspect a RAM/L2 Cache issue similar to the same problem they had with the iPad Air. That was one of the main reasons they came out with the iPad Air 2nd Gen so quickly. The increased the RAM from 1GB in iPad Air 1st Gen to 2GB in the 2nd Gen, and the L2Cache was increacsed from 1MB in the iPad Air 1st Gen to 2MB in the 2nd Gen. The same thing should have been done in the new iPhone as they are suffering from the same issue that 1st Gen iPad Air's suffered from. I stick with apple because of quality and this thing behaves like the Androids do. Not happy and Apple should fix the issue or offer refunds!

I agree. When you look at the length of time this problem has existed, you would have thought Apple would have squared it away by now. I have the 6plus with all of the updates and at least once a week I have to turn the phone off and turn it back on again because messages has frozen. You would think that with all of the posts about the issue Apple would have done something about this problem and it is a problem. I've gone to the Apple store and they've done the reset but it still happens. Come on Apple fix the problem and stop acting like it's not happening.

I have the iPhone 6 plus, and I am now having a hard time holding finger on message to get the COPY/MORE option. It takes several tries, different messages, and then finally having to reset the phone. And then it will work for a few times and quit again. It has to be IOS 8.1.3, because I had this issue with iPad Air too and I finally had to do a general reset, a pain.

UPDATE: I had an Apple chat online last night, and I explained about the freezing of my keyboard during texting, aside from other quirky things also related to texting. If I am in the middle of a text and I want to insert a photo from the gallery using the little camera icon, my keyboard remains up and does not allow me to access the library. That's issue #1. Also, if I try to send a photo while in the text box but without having hit the keyboard first, I am then able to see the entire gallery, select a photo, but I have no options to Choose or Cancel. And then it all freezes.

Their answer so far is a temporary solution to the freezing during texting: They made me reset the Keyboard Dictionary, and so far, it's ok. We will see for how long before the frozen keyboard returns.

I have an ip 6 plus and am having the EXACT same problem! I'm not using Swiftkey but I am using another third-party keyboard and the keyboard freezes a LOT of times, mainly in the message app. Other times are when I open my contact list and try to search for a person and the keyboard does not pop up to, you know, type in the person's name. THIS IS FRUSTRATING because everyone uses keyboard for everything on the phone!! I don't know what's the point of posting a complaint/question up here without the Apply guys trying to fix our problem! I currently switch from using Android to Apple and have been liking the Apple design and versatility so far but this is disappointing, to say the least. Please fix!

I had similar problems as the original post on my iPhone 4S:

  • Tapping on a text from the list would be followed by a 3-5 second pause until the text message displayed.
  • Interestingly, you could go back and forth between the list and a particular text sender in a fast (normal) manner, but if you choose a different text sender from the list, that annoying 3-5 second pause would come into play.
  • Sometimes I couldn't even get to my Messages list and was just presented with a blank new Message text screen.
  • Sometimes I couldn't turn iMessages "on" in the Settings page.
  • Sometimes only the last text of a sender would load after the delay; but then waiting a bit, past texts would also be displayed.
  • When sending a text, sometimes the progress bar would stop near 80% done and not send the text until a minute later.
  • Occasionally, people would send me a text and it wouldn't be delivered to my phone (although most texts to my iPhone would register fine).

All of these behaviors seemed to crop up at the same time. I associated them with the 8.2 iOS update.

This didn't solve my problem: Toggling any of the settings in Messages, Shut down/Start up, or Factory Reset (via iTunes) and using Backup Restore.

This did solve my problem: Factory Reset (via iTunes) without Backup Restore.

It is a bit of a pain to reload my apps and other settings... but the Messages section works flawlessly now. The Messages section was so disabled it was essentially unusable. I was "this close" to buying an iPhone 6, thinking that my 4S was just too old to handle iOS 8.2. I would have been wrong. Hope this helps others.

I tried to reply to my wife's message from her iPhone 6 and the screen on my iPhone 6+ locked up. I could not type in any text. I closed down the phone and it worked when it restarted. No need for a complete reset but it was very annoying as I could not respond in a timely manner!! Makes me worried about purchasing the new watch (which I have ordered).

I seem to have solved this with Apple over the phone with support - the problem as my back up from an older iPhone - not a seamless move to iPhone plus I must admit. I should be able to bring in an iTunes back up from an older iPhone into a new iPhone with no problems - but that was causing my iMessages to freeze. When I did not import a back up, they stopped freezing. Well at least this seems to do the trick (I have just done this and no freezing for past half hour or so in messages). Problem is I lost a lot of data (old texts etc) so a bit of a drag. Apple should solve this as many people rely on iTunes backups - they are making us rely more and more on iCloud which is a bit cheeky... I have issues with a laptop I bought too - cannot synch calendars and contacts using iTunes - had to move to iCloud because forced to effectively.
