FaceTime call will not rotate to landscape on Apple TV

I have been using FaceTime and AirPlay mirroring to put FaceTime calls on my living room TV via Apple TV for over 2 years. After the recent upgrade to iOS 8 and Apple TV the orientation is incorrect. I turn my iPhone to landscape orientation, but the video shows on the TV in portrait orientation, and the video is rotated 90 degrees. I believe this to be a bug in either the AppleTV update or iOS 8. Anyone else have this issue?

Same problem here.

Yesterday I bought the Apple TV 4th generation (32 GB), I´m using it with the iPhone 6 s.

I called my parents (they use iMac) but no landscape mode available for Facetime, if I rotate the iPhone to landscape mode, they see me correctly in full screen, but they appear on my screen vertically. It just doesn´t rotate to landscape mode.

I don´t have problems with other apps, like watching photos or videos saved in my iPhone, they are displayed in full screen (landscape mode).

When making the call, I mirrored (duplicate) iPhone´s content. Am I missing something?

This morning, Apple TV installed an update but I didn´t have time to check if they fixed this bug. I´ll try it this evening and if they fixed it, I´ll post it here.

The update didn´t fix this issue.

It seems (as someone posted here) that the problem is in the Facetime app itself which, connected to Apple TV, doesn´t support landscape mode in iPhones.

So, it´s up to Apple to fix it (I wonder if they are aware of the issue).

Meanwhile I´m using the app LINE to enjoy video-conferences in full landscape mode in the TV screen, which works just fine and with good image and sound quality.

Everyone who is frustrated by this problem, please take a brief moment to report the issue on one or both of these pages:

  1. iPhone Feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
  2. Apple TV Feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html

Example of my report: (Feel free to copy/paste, or write your own.)

  • Subject: FaceTime Won't Rotate to Landscape on AppleTV
  • Feedback Type: Bug Report (or) Report a Problem
  • Comments: When sending an iPhone FaceTime call to an AppleTV via AirPlay, the AppleTV will not display the FaceTime call in a horizontal/landscape orientation, regardless of how the phone is held.
Holding the iPhone vertically displays correctly on the television; however, rotating the phone horizontally does not also rotate the video on the AppleTV, which results in a sideways view constrained within a vertical/portrait orientation.
This is an ongoing issue which has been reported by many users with a variety of iPhone, AppleTV, and iOS versions/combinations. More information can be found in this support thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6650493

If we all submit this feedback, Apple will take notice and fix the issue. Thanks for helping!

Apple TV 4th generation (version 9.1)

iPhone 6 s (iOS 9.2)

It wasn´t fixed with the update.

---------------------------------------------

Last Saturday (2015/12/5) I called Apple TV´s support. After explaining the issue to the operator he put me trough to a technician. Once he reproduced the issue, he called me back and told me that this is an iOS´s issue that has been on board since iOS 8.

He said he was going to check out with the development team to see whether they are going to fix this bug or not (and leave it as «spec») and will contact me this week. I´m still waiting and I´ll post any update here.

They gave me the impression that they were not aware of this issue.

I live abroad and being able to Facetime my family with a big screen was one of the main reasons of purchasing this Apple TV. Before buying it, I went to an App Store to check if Facetime is working properly, we made a Facetime call test on an iMac and it worked, though we didn´t try the landscape mode (I took it for granted that it´ll work). How wrong was I!

This has been going on far too long already... I think this is the only way forward...and so I have done it too.
