ios crash report due to a third party application

My son was watching something on his iPhone (5c) iOS 7.1.2 and received this message in Safari "http://supportcallnow<dot>com 'warning!! iOS Crash Report' " Due to a third party application in your phone, iOS crashed. Contact Support for an immediate fix - 1800-***-2251.

Fairly sure this is a virus or at least a scam. Have already tried to reset by holding the power and square down until the apple icon appears, but to no avail. I cannot get the message off of the Safari screen .

Help!

Did they manage to use your mother's card? I just had that pop up, I managed to open safari quickly and before it popped up again I hit the x to close the window, took me a few tries but it worked. The number that showed up for me was 1-800-556-2901, I didn't call, knew it was a scam was just concerned about picking up a virus or something. I always tell my dad or older family members not to give any info to anyone.

I followed these directions and it worked!

Prior to this, I called the toll-free number in the pop-up box, telling me that safari had crashed and I needed to call.

I was directed to a call center in India, asked for my name and the serial number of my iPhone, which I gave. Hmm. Probably not a good idea.

The customer assistant told me, after running a check on my serial number, what kind of iPhone I had (a 5S-- thank-you), and that since my Apple care warranty had expired, I needed to pay 39.99 with a credit card to fix it. I said no thank-you, hung up, and found this solution here.

Thanks again!

TThat is most likely just a pop up and can easily be solved by clearing your history and or cookies, preferably both. You can press the book in the safari page and you will see "clear history" written in blue, but if you cant do that then go to settings, general , Safari , and then you can see two buttons, " clear history" and " clear history and cookies" if the problem persists then call or visit apple

Another way to stop this is to go to your email and click a link (that you know is NOT a scam) and it will open another tab in safari and then you can click the "x" on the offending tab to close it. This happened to my wife today and was the first time I had seen it and she didn't know what she tapped to end up there. I went to her email and clicked a link from the bookbub email she subscribes to and was able to "x" out the scam tab. I'm not sure if this has been fixed in iOS 8.3 or not since she is still running 7 and I can't figure out how she got there so I can try it on one of my iOS 8.x devices.
