I cannot delete iPhone keyboard shortcuts. They keep restoring.

I have deleted old keyboard shortcuts that were no longer used and added new ones using the same shortcut. For instance typing "eml" would auto-fill with my old email address. I deleted this shortcut and made a new one - "eml" = new email address. iCloud keeps restoring the old shortcuts, so now I have two "eml" shortcuts with two different email addresses. Also, old shortcuts are constantly being restored! I cannot delete any shortcut! They will delete for a couple of days and then they are "restored" to my iPhone. How the heck do you permanently delete keyboard shortcuts in iOS? I tried turning off backup, deleting, turning on, waiting, updating to no avail. Is there a way to completely wipe the backup/settings file stored in iCloud for an iOS device?

Keyboard Shortcut returning solution

Wow it is insane the amount of people who are having this issue. The reason this error exist because of a corrupt backup/ local keyboard files. Your iPhone has created multiple folders for the keyboard shortcut and iCloud can't delete those and because of this your backups only delete on iPhone and not on iCloud because they are not in the proper folder. IMPORTANT: All your shortcuts are being uploaded to iCloud even the ones you can not delete. Once you attempt to delete them iCloud does delete them (Temporary because your iPhone has a corrupt backup that won't delete it and it just gets restore back)

The solution is very simple.

You could start from a scratch iPhone and lose all your information or you can modify your backup and delete the corrupted files. As I said earlier, your iCloud backup has all your keyboard shortcuts backed up so you won't lose any of them, make sure you do an iCloud backup.

Step one

Backup your iPhone to iTunes.

Step two

You will need a program that can read iTune's backup

Step Three

open the program and select your latest backup from the left hand side of the program

Navigate to

System files > KeyboardDomain

User uploaded file

Once inside the Keyboard domain select > Library > Keyboard

Delete "CoreDataUbiquitySupport"

User uploaded file

Before you delete it let me explain whats inside. Go ahead and open the coredata folder, there should only be two folders (By Default) in here, but as you can see you have more than two. This is all local and because of that your backups keep coming back because your iPhone keeps reading all the folders when it should only be reading the default one that iCloud gives you.

Step four

Restore your iPhone using iTunes and using this backup. Once your iPhone connects to iCloud it will download your keyboard shortcuts and in the corrupted folder there will only be two folders (Or how many your iCloud reads) making it corrected.

Should anyone have questions or answers please feel free to contact me. This modification is 100% safe as long as you delete what I told you to. Any typos or errors I apologize. I rather fix the issue than waste 1 hour explaining or fixing my typos. I came across this issue on a few iPhones at my company and I had to come up with a solution.

No need for an apology. The original question for this thread was " I can not delete iPhone keyboard shortcuts. They keep restoring." But at this point, even after the 8.3 update, there still is apparently no fix. So any information about shortcuts may be helpful in some way. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad your issue was resolved.

The issue hasn't been resolved for me. I was expecting a call back from someone at apple this morning. Unfortunately they didn't call. The issue is so frustrating!!

From what I have discovered is that the issue is iCloud related. One way you could fix this is to create a new iCloud account and use that. However that is a very extreme measure for something of which should be so simple to fix! I am also inconvenienced by the fact I have upgraded the storage option on my account.

Apr 10, 2015 9:17 AM in response to zoso4

I do that…!

Merci (et thanks for the sentences in french…)

Je vous tiens au courant, bien entendu !

Well, count me in guys.... Found myself here after doing a Google search for this insanely hair-pulling problem. If Samsung doesn't start an Ad campaign mocking this ridiculous problem (like the sext-prank victim a few posts ago) then I will!!

I have about 10 or so ultra-annoying shortcuts that I've found are creeping into my everyday texting/messaging, and I want this problem GONE!

I'm going though all the posts, and just when I read there's a fix/solution, it turns out it was a dud. Everyone realizes that everything can, of course, be fixed with the 'nuclear option' of full iDevice restore, but there's many of us that do not wish to go that path, especially for such a seemingly easy fix for the devs to perform...

C'mon, Apple! Get with the program!!

btw: What's with the French?? o__0

Apr 13, 2015 8:17 AM in response to zoso4

Thanks for your feeling…!!

Bizarre…!!

Apr 13, 2015 8:47 AM in response to urbanbike

English:

So I understand, you are saying SwiftKey does not work in Tweetbot on the iPad? Hmm! That may be a Tweetbot issue for some reason. SwiftKey, and other 3rd party keyboards, do not work well for entering contacts information in contacts. the cursor is all over the place. But because of the shortcuts issue and other stock keyboard issues I have, I still prefer SwiftKey. Many have no problems with the stock keyboard. I do. I can not read the low contrast text in the predictive box. Anyways, maybe Apple will eventually fix the shortcuts problem. hopefully in iOS 9.

@zoso4 stop being such an Apple apologist 🙂

First, I could argue that the number of people that are suffering with the shortcut problem is much larger than represented by these forums. A very small percentage of users actually take their complaints to forums. Second, Apple should take the severity of the problem into account, not just the pervasiveness. I accidentally made "a" a shortcut; now every time I type "a" the stupid shortcut phrase pops up and there is no way to get rid of this shortcut 😠. I can tell you about a dozen other iOS bugs that are similarly treated by Apple. Lastly, everything you said in Apple's defense could be validated if there was at least transparency like there is with Android. In other words, we could see Apple's bug reports, know how many people are reporting this bug, development's response, fix plan, etc. Unfortunately, Apple conceals all of this information so we can never really know how many users are really exposed, what the status of this bug is, etc. All of this information is an Apple secret and I for one am getting tired of all the secrecy.

My guess is the the reason bugs like this have not been fixed is because Apple makes quality tradeoffs in favor of new marketing gimmicks that raise short term revenues. Lastly, if I am going to reinstall and reconfigure my phone, then I am going to do that with an open platform like Android.

That was great MustReason, after being scolded by zoso4 by making a sweeping, nuanced statement such as "Get with the programme, Apple!" Zoso, as MustReason points out you sound as though you're defending Apple for a seemingly easy to correct problem.

Please stop attacking the userbase and rather focus your efforts on those who are not addressing the problem to begin with.

Spank you.

Ooops, I mean THANK YOU, that was one of my ZombieShortcuts necroing from the dead.

Where have I been an Apple apologist? I'm just as frustrated by Apple's lack of fixing this as the rest of you. Where did I apologize for Apple? I simply stated the facts as they are. You're all looking for a fix, and there is none, except to restore your device. That's not my fault. It's Apple's fault. They should fix the shortcuts problem. It should have been fixed in 8.3 with that long changelog they had. I'm on your side! But I'm also realistic. This problem is, indeed, serious enough that Apple should fix it regardless of how many complaints they receive. But they haven't yet. Why not? I don't know that! They have to be aware of it. They could at least acknowledge there's that problem and state what is bring done about it. Even though I restored and started fresh with better shortcuts, I still get plagued with email addresses popping up when I don't want them. I reset the keyboard dictionary in settings, but that hasn't helped. So I use SwiftKey. No problems with SwiftKey. And I DID NOT scold anyone. I was whole heartedly agreeing with them. An "a"? GEEEZ! This needs to be fixed! But I don't know what to do other than offer the feedback link. What suggestions do you guys have? Switch platforms? Go to Android? Whatever floats your boat. But Android is not without their own problems. But have at it! The Galaxy S6 looks good.Heck, I bought the LG G3 for my sister in law. I played with it a while. Nice device. I upgrade in August. I may stick with the iPhone and get the 6s Plus or seriously look at the Android options. I'm tired of Apple games. Pre-order an Watch and the ship date is June? SMH!

Apr 19, 2015 11:46 AM in response to Panzershrek

I apologize for my bad writing. As I stated I didn't want to spend a lot of time fixing my mistakes and errors because I was at work. The fix will survive a reboot because the iPhone will no longer be confusing itself reading the local shortcuts backups and thus it will automatically download the ones from iCloud. Once you perform another reboot it will load the local ones which are now in sync with iCloud.

I am glad I am able to put this issue to rest for all of you. I have performed this method on four people and they are all happy. Also keep in mind you can do more advance modification to your backups and it is not limited to just this. If anyone is having any sorts of other issues and you are not jailbroken you can solve them via this program. Once again my apologies for the rushed guide and errors.
