Yes, you are right: There is no one here with this problem just after updating the iOS. We are all clowns waiting for some applause from apple.

A) yes, we have no lucky, but you. Enjoy it. =D

B) Please, if you are not trying to help, just don't post. We are having a situation here, and doesn't matter what you say: it happened after updating.

I may add one thing here: relationship. Some years ago, Apple was in love with the consumers, and usually was posting here. If they pray attention here again, I think there is a lot of opportunities to improve their relationship with the consumers.

Guys, yesterday I talked to apple via chat. After reporting for the second time this issue with the battery, they suggested me that I should go to a Genius Bar and, after their tests, I could replace the phone. I think this is the answer I would like to hear, and for sure I will update and make all the tests with the new phone inside the store.

Apple changed a lot.

Nothing wrong with that service wouldn't you agree? When you took the phone in and had it tested what did they find out? What did they tell you?

I never said that no one experienced this issue after updating the iOS. But that's not a direct cause-effect proof. It is, at best, coincidental and circumstantial evidence, and there needs to be more troubleshooting to confirm the theory. And the fact that the vast majority of identical devices that have updated to the same iOS do not have the problem is a very strong indicator, if not outright proof, that it's not the iOS.

Most issues on an iOS devices that are not resolved by simple relaunches, restarts or resets are caused by one of the following:

A) Faulty hardware.

B) A faulty installation of the operating system (not the operating system itself), or an outdated iOS.

C) User data or third-party apps causing interference.

And by your OWN POST replying to pogster, you showed that the diagnostics confirmed a HARDWARE issue.

A hardware issue is not an iOS issue. Software updates cannot cause a hardware problem. Your device had a pre-existing problem that was only revealed after some time, that may or may not have been prompted by the process of the iOS update.

In other words, it wasn't the operating system. It was the hardware. Which is exactly what I said.

And Apple NEVER posted here. The closest thing are the community specialists, who only answer questions that have been unanswered after at least 24 hours. This is, and always has been, a user-to-user technical assistance forum.

But I'm sure in your 17 days of being on this forum, you know far more than anyone else about the level of Apple's involvement on this forum

I am reminded of the old saying in science circles that "correlation is not causation."

While there are a number of widespread reports that the iOS 8 update created a great many bugs and issues for large segments of the iOS units out there, not every unit was effected.

The iterative process of releases to now iOS 8.1.2 seeks to correct the issues on the software side of things, but if those bugs get introduced into a unit that is also having hardware issues (like mine for instance) having the two events coincide can very effectively mask the true underlying issues and lead users into misidentifying the true root cause.

I too tried the various steps posted online regarding how to resolve the issue as a function of the iOS updates, but had no luck re: the battery life. There were other minor bugs I noticed that remained but nothing that made the unit unusable for me. So in my circumstance, I was able to deduce a high probability I had a hardware issue, but with no way to really prove it until I stumbled upon the link I posted earlier. Others could be in the same boat, but may be unable to definitively prove a hardware issue if their unit serial number is not within the range that Apple has identified as needing repairs and thus its not "testible" unless you go to an Apple store and have them test the unit.

I have an appt. scheduled to get my unit serviced re: the battery replacement program and will post after I get the unit back regarding how the battery life is.

Yes, there is just 17 days with this login - but believe or not, I can talk to real people without measuring my straight against them. Maybe you could try that some day.

Just look what you just wrote: faulty hardware or installation (regarding it's a new device, there is no other apps here, so I will discard that). So any of YOUR briliant possibilities, happened after updating the iOS. just minutes before it, was everything ok.

Now, smart one, you just rewrote the first post here: There is something wrong, and the battery still draining.

So, if you don't have the solution, please, let me - only 17 days dumb - here, ok?

I had same problem with my 5 months old 5s and I have solved it. My device battery was awesome at first months. I was showing off about my 5s's battery life to android users 🙂 But one day... after upgrading to 8.1.2 I have shocked about apple products quality and stability. Battery was draining wildly! At stand-by airplane mode it was eating itself like a monster : 2 pieces per hour. Normally when I go to bed I take it to airplane mode and it doesn't spend 1 piece until morning (about 7 hours.) So I worked on it to fix this battery nightmare. I have tried following steps and now wow! it is better than ever! I don't know the reason, but it is very good now. I think there is not an engineer to understand and fix this issue. Not in apple nor in microsoft... Technology is developing very fast these days, but this is not a controlled development. So I think apple can't fix everything, because sometimes nobody can not understand the cause of a problem..

So what I did:

- Restoring last itunes backup -> not worked.

- Format via itunes (reset) then restore last itunes backup -> not worked.

- Disabling location service, background apps, etc. -> not worked.

- Reset, clean install, not restore from itunes -> not worked.

- Reset again then restore last itunes backup, power completely off for 20 minutes then power on -> worked 🙂

I say again, I don't know how this is fixed. Closing the device is a good operation for all battery powered devices but I can't say this is the solution. I advice you to close your devices at least 5 hours in a week to get your battery more healtier. I close all of my devices every weekend night until morning. I hope apple will open his ears and can find the correct solution for this problem

Hi All,

Please could you cast your eyes over this lot and see if and process or procedure is missing or wrong in trying to identify this battery drain, which many of us feel is a suspected iOS 8.1.2 related issue, and let everyone know.

To start - Phone perfectly ok on 8.1.1

Phone - 5s 32GB A1457 running iOS 8.1.2 (purchased October 2013)

Back up’s / full restores from MBP on fully up to date OS X Yosemite / iTunes 12.0.1.26

Fully recharged iphone

Restored iphone as new device with no apps/email/apple ID etc.

Ensured all options - Location services, diagnostics etc were off as part of restore but only turned on battery percentage. Checked all apps that are part of ios were fully shut down

Ejected from itunes and unplugged power lead

Put in full airplane mode - no Bluetooth, wifi or network.

Powered down and removed SIM card

Allowed phone to completely stabilize to room temp (20oC) over 2 hours - back of phone all felt the same temperature

Switched phone back on where it displayed 100%

Clicked power button to turn off display and left phone alone

Checked after 1 hour, had dropped by 19% to 81%

Ran my fingers over back of phone, whereby it was notably hotter down the phone in a line with the rear camera. (i.e. opposite side to battery)

Put screen back to sleep.

Plugged in a fully charged battery pack which has in the 10 months I’ve owned it and before / after 8.1.2, can reliably fully recharge the phone twice with a little to spare (genuine apple lead used for this)

Left phone over night and next day in this set up and checked battery percentage drop 9 times in total by tapping the home button. (Screen lit up for the 5 or so seconds it does and then went back out)

Rechecked back of phone several time for temperature with similar results noted

Total standby time with a fully recharged iphone and supplementary battery pack connected was around 26 hours.

Repeated with new IPSW from different source - same results!

Can anyone collaborate my temperature finding? Or have something like a Flir heat camera to try on their phone?

Many thanks for your time in reading this and any input for the greater good!

Same problem here!

iPhone 5S - A1429

Since upgrading to iOS 8.1.2, I have to charge my battery three to four times a day. I tried to make a backup via iTunes, restore iOS and restore backup but the issue is still there.

Zero Petential -> I can confirm the temperature finding!! A heat camera would be a great idea , I find it hard to tell what is the center of the heat but I can definitely tell it gets hotter than usual on the back of the phone.

I checked with 4 colleagues in the office, different iPhone owners that all run iOS 8.2.1

iPhone 4S -> no problem

iPhone 5 A1429 -> no problem

iPhone 5 A1429 -> no problem

iPhone 6 plus -> no problem

So this is weird, I am the only one here. Two colleagues with the same phone, don't have the problem. It seems only a small subset of iPhone models have this problem.

I checked on their phone the model (settings -> general -> about -> model)

My own iPhone 5 with battery issue : Model MD299NF/A

Colleague 1 with iPhone 5 without battery issue : Model ND297DN/A

Colleague 2 with iPhone 5 without battery issue : Model MD299NF/A

-> there is one colleague with the exact same model that does not have the problem, so there must be another variable in play that causes the battery drain.

I also checked settings -> general -> usage -> battery usage

This however does not reveal a specific application that drains the battery, it is just seems that whatever application was most active, consumed the most energy.

Thanks in advance for any additional information!!

I have an iPhone 6 128 Gigs model, after a full charge its draining 15% battery in 20 minutes( approx) and I have found that the phone is using data in the background even when background refresh, location services, iCloud are turned off. after turning off wifi/ 3G, the drain stops. also there is corrosion on the lightning port and this phone did not even get wet. Please suggest as to what shall be done,

Hello Dear,

I was also facing the same issue. This battery drain started after iOS 8 update. I tried many troubleshooting and tips to save battery. But now finally I have resolved the issue myself. I have found the culprits.

1. Turn Off Background refresh (Though it is mentioned on every single website which gives battery saving tips)

2. This is biggest thing and not mentioned anywhere... Notifications... Just go to Notifications menu in Settings and you will see list of all Apps installed on your iPhone. Open each app and turn off the notifications... Please turn off all the notifications. After that turn on notifications for only necessary Apps like FB, WhatsApp etc.

3. Padcasts..

Sync podcasts- Turn it off.

Sync Every - Manual

4. Mail - Keep all settings on manual (Neither on push nor on fetch)

Trust me this works like charm and I'm getting my battery life again like old days.

If this works please send me feedback.

I was able to take my iPhone 5 into Apple for the defective battery replacement program. They were quite efficient with the work and it took about an hour before my phone was back in my hands. So far at least, this seems to have resolved the issue for my particular circumstance. Their diagnostics indicated that my original battery was working at approx. 60% of its capacity -- hence the recall. I will maintain an eye on how quickly the unit drains, but for now its seems to have resolved my problems.

Dear Friend,

I have already mentioned that 2 out of 4 my recommended steps are given on every website which provides you battery saving tips for iphone but kindly focus on step 2nd and 3rd.... and I think this must work as I have been a victim of this problem myself and like you I tried everything else but no luck. I dont believe its a battery hardware issue because my same 5s Gold is working like charm now. I bought iphone 5s Space grey which came with iOS 7 but after using above 4 steps I was able to get full day bettery from my iphone 5s gold so I have upgraded space grey to iOS 8 also.

1 more tip is for you if thats the issue.. If iOS 8 has given you only Enable LTE option and you cant switch among 2G,3G and LTE yourself then also it can be a mess. And after a long 2 month study I resolved this issue using a patch named "GPP 3to2" which you can search and download using safari.. I can not send you link here because Apple team will remove my comment in that case. .

But I must tell you some consequences of this patch -

1. You can not access LTE after installing this patch (Only after a restore LTE will be available)

2. You will get only 2 options then a.) 2G on b.) 2G off

(In 2G off you wont be able to access 2G at all so its different from Enable 3G button available on your 4s in which phone gets 2G signals if 3G is not available)

3. Its safe for your phone.

4. No jailbreak needed.

I hope this might work. Send feedback if you get some luck.

Blessings!!!!
