I can confirm that the issue is related to the Yosemite 10.10.2 developer preview release. You don't need to erase and reinstall the OS. Just go to App Store - Purchases and download the regular (non-beta) Yosemite 10.1.1 installer. You can then install it and it will overwrite your beta with the last production release - without touching your data or settings. At least it worked for me.

Just remember to remove yourself from the beta program so you won't inadvertently reinstall it later.

You're running the beta. If you opted in before Yosemite was released the beta program continued even after the general release. Go to the App Store and download and install the general release (you can install it right over the top of the beta) then go to https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/unenroll and unenroll from the program so you don't end up getting automatic updates

I had this problem as well, spent some time troubleshooting, and found the solution offered here (with the help of an Apple Senior Advisor) to be successful.

I downloaded Yosemite v.10.10.1 (release version) from the App Store, installed over v.10.10.2 (which, curiously, Apple suggests cannot be done), and the iPod Nano 7th Gen magically 🙂 showed up in iTunes. Since I was still interested in participating in the Beta program, I installed v.10.10.2 on my older (mid-2012) MBAir, plugged the iPod Nano into that computer, and lo and behold, it showed up properly in iTunes.

Being curious, and realizing that I could revert to v.10.10.1 easily if necessary, I re-updated the MBAir with the original problem (early-2014 model) to v.10.10.2, and the iPod Nano appears as expected in iTunes, rather than maddeningly unusably in Finder.

Hope that this helps at least one person from losing chunks of hair.
