iPad: Facetime not ringing under iOS8 if screen is locked

Hello community,

Facetime does not ring in our iPad since we have updated to iOS8. Facetime is still working though, but only if the iPad is active (screen on) it will ring. Otherwise (if screen has been locked for more than 2 minutes), the iPad does not ring or give any notification about an incoming call.

In my familiy, we have 3 different iPad (2x iPad Air + 1x iPad Mini) that we are using at different locations and in all three devices we have observed the same facts:

  • if iPad is active (being used), Facetime incoming calls are properly notified and iPad rings: no problem.
  • if iPad is locked (screen has been blocked for more than 2 minutes), iPad does not ring neither displays any incoming call notification. If unlocked later on, FaceTime won't show any missed call at all.
  • if iPad is locked but charging (plugged), then Facetime incoming calls are notified and iPad rings: no problem.

All this is happening in each of our three devices just after we have updated them to the newest firmware (iOS8, now at iOS 8.1.2). After asking around, other iPad users have been experiencing the same issues.

I find it very surprising, not to find any similar issues in these community forums. So far, most FaceTime related problems were solved by either:

  • Checking date/time settings
  • checking volume settings
  • checking "no disturb" mode is off
  • checking Facetime Notifications are allowed.

I have tried all possibilities and I can almost certainly say that nothing in my settings is wrong. So far I can observe, it is an issue related to any iPad with the newest firmware and it has apparently to do with the management of incoming Facetime notifications while the screen is locked.

Any help or advice to solve this matter will be kindly appreciated!

Kind Regards

I'm having the same issues, but only since the update. I HATE Every. Single. Thing. About the update. Anyhoo, none of my calls come in when it's locked. Did you ever get a solution to turn the stupid silence off? Obviously I've checked the dnd and volume. I'm BEYOND frustrated. I also have cell service on my iPad so it's not the wifi.

I think I found the answer. My wife and I had the same problem. The problem is that even though Do Not Disturb isn't turned on for everything else, it is turned on for FaceTime (only)—at least that is the default setting on both of our iPads. 😠

Solution:

1. Settings>DoNotDisturb>AllowCallsFrom. Its default setting is “No One.” Change it to “Everyone.” (Or make a custom setting.)

2. Settings >Sounds>RingersAndAlerts. Yours may be set to zero. Slide the button to the middle, or to whatever is a comfortable volume.

After we made those changes, it will now ring when called, even if in sleep mode. 😁

Hope this fixes it for you as well.

found an elegantly simple reason for the problem elsewhere in this forum- FINALLY! The switch on the side of my ipad was set for use as a mute switch in the settings, AND it was turned to MUTE. Can't believe didn't realize this (but other sounds were generally working so didn't think of it)! Hope this helps someone else. Saved me a trip to the Genius Bar!

See my response above - the side switch on my ipad was set for Mute in the Settings (as opposed to Lock Rotation) and the switch itself was set to mute! Another suggested fix has been to be sure your "Do Not Disturb" setting is not turned on. This has nothing to do with the "Silence - Always or Only While Locked" setting; Be sure the Manual & Scheduled buttons are also off; and, in your control panel, check & see that the "moon" is not highlighted. See also CrPa's response above about checking your settings under Settings / Facetime

I had exactly the same problem with my iPad Air 2. After reading these posts, I tried all the suggestions but nothing worked But I rechecked all sound settings and found that the ringer & alerts volume had been turned all the way down (not by me). I reset to a middle level and now FaceTime rings again. Go to Settings - Sounds and move the Ringer & Alerts slide bar back to normal level. Hope this helps.

I have had the same problem and have spent hours reading forums trying to fix the problem. I have now solved the problem on my iPad 3. Just above the volume button is a small switch. This switch is like an on/off switch that controls either "Lock Rotation" or "Mute". Under the Settings > General Tab you will find "USE SIDE SWITCH TO: Lock Rotation or Mute. Which either you choose you then turn "Lock Rotation or Mute" on or off with the SIDE SWITCH. So if you check "Mute" and have the switch in the down position your iPad will be muted. Move it to the up position and Mute is off. Or if you have Lock Rotation checked and you have the switch in the down position the iPad's rotation will be locked and if the switch is in the up position your iPad will rotate. Hours and hours of trying to solve the problem for a little unknown switch.😠
