A follow up question to Introducing Apple Recommends, Manage Subscriptions, and This Helped Me

In Introducing Apple Recommends, Manage Subscriptions, and This Helped Me it was written

Now anyone can click "This helped me" to say thanks to helpful members. When several people mark the same post, it will earn a gold star and appear at the top of the discussion, so it’s easier for others to find. The poster will also earn five reputation points for a job well done.

Does anyone know (or is it written anywhere) just how many is 'serveral'? Is it decided on the fly? Or does it depend on the phase of the moon?

Will the points be awarded to the poster only once, or if say 100 people mark it as helpful will more then 5 points be awarded?

Sounds like a really good system but it seems that a bit more thought should have gone into it, no? Or at least the explanation could be clearer.

Ciao.

(Another question) Can the original post (this one) get marked as helpful also? Imagine earning points for posting :-)

A test to see f the helpful shows up on your own post.

Seems it does. Will this count toward the 'several' needed to get the points?

I thought you have never used Facebook?

I haven't - tried an account once and abandoned it pretty much immediately. Have declined any attempt by anyone to join any social media site/friend/whatever. I prefer trying to keep my privacy intact as best as possible and do not care for these sites collecting and making money selling my private information.

If I had a Like link, I would Like your post.

Likes are different - COMPLETELY - than Helped - it is the facility known as "Acclaim"

in their former life here (hidden from the masses by no direct "link" or "button") and still at JiveCommunity, they are meant to serve exactly the purpose you describe... you could see who "agrees" with your stuff - likes and also Bookmarking you or your posts counts - and keeps track of who does it

Nothing to do with points! Only, well, acclaim...

Gamification is a bona-fide stimulus to participation - the way it is twisted here is not the way it is designed to work effectively

They are just "Like", there is no special meaning and they existed other places long before here or at Jive. I've always thought it unfortunate there wasn't a dislike button on Facebook. For that matter could have used one for your post.

I'm not sure points here really are "gamification" (just love made up words) and I don't understand how they are "twisted" here. Basically all they ever meant to me was someone could see a correct answer if they searched and they allowed me into the Lounge. Past that I really haven't paid attention and have to look at one of my posts to see how many I have. But that doesn't make me any better than those who do like getting the points and keep track of them. To each their own.

Maybe for some. Not for me.

Why on earth would I care or be interested in following or keeping track of people? I'm not in law enforcement.

Neighbor, you know me better than to think that I am talking off the cuff... I'll let Jive Talkin' do it for me

Basic game mechanics are built into Jive and automatic, driving community engagement with points and recognition. But we’ve gone further, offering advanced gamification that really amps up participation and productivity. Create targeted missions, badges and rewards that encourage specific actions, like giving helpful answers, assisting other users and creating shared content. Leader boards let you tap into your community’s competitive spirit and acknowledge top contributors.

Game theory is the backbone of all of it - do some research on how smart folks embrace the theory... a starting point

You'll like the "Criticism" section...

To be honest, I think all this level achievement requirements to gain basic needs for helpING is foolhardy obstacles. This is the only place I have ever 'helped' out that treats me like child from the git-go. Read my CV and let's get to the problem solving. Approve or disapprove any UserTips I write and I could care less about the Lounge or calls or whatever - that stuff is vanity for sure - invite me or not, but "earning" it is crazy.

Balderdash! You said yourself you appreciate a "Thank You" from those you help. Likes are a way that your peers can tell you "Good Job" - all Acclaims are necessary for a healthy and productive workplace. I have been the "Boss" in technical/customer service shops & development teams - the crew "needs" to be appreciated. It is a known fact that these acclaims are more important to job satisfaction than raises in pay. IMHO, points = pay.

Likes are the younger generation's "way" - you can always ignore it, but 'tis here to stay along with a lot more to come likely.

Let's play poker sometime and see if you want to win or not. Darts? Horseshoes? Bridge? Ping-Pong? Monopoly? Chutes & Ladders? We have done it all our lives. It is a "Basic Instinct" to win - and you can't win if you don't play.
