GMAIL Accounts unusable after 8.3 update!

I have lost access to my GMAIL accounts after upgrading to IOS 8.3 !

IOS Settings does not provide me a way to enter a new application password for the account - there is NO PASSWORD box displayed anywhere in the GMAIL configuration. So I tried deleting the account and re-adding it but i get stuck in an endless loop of two-step confirmation and it "appears" to add the account (prompts me for which features - mail, notes, calendar, etc.) but then when all is said and done NO GMAIL ACCOUNT shows up in my list of accounts. WTH?

And trying to navigate Apple's support screens has become an exercise in frustration and futility!

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this mess?

I also had experienced this issue. You need to power off the iPad or iPhone.

To Power off this is to hold the On/Off button and slide the power off. Wait for a couple of seconds when it's done loading.

Another way is to remove your Email account from settings and add it back on settings.

I have had a similar problem, though with my iCloud mail, and have tried all the suggestions on these pages, and in desperation a trip to the local Apple Store, all to no avail, until I saw your message and the magic word "wait". I turned the iPad right off and left it off for a while, and have just turned it on to find mail in the iCloud account. Wonderful! Thank you so much for the inspiration!

I recently had the very same issue after updating my iPhone 5 to iOS 8.3. After very similar frustrating experiences I found an article on Google that resolved my issue. In short you add your gmail account back as an EXCHANGE account. Here's the link --

Exchange is only available for paid Google accounts, not free ones.

FInally! Thanks a ton to dbrooks312. This worked perfectly and now that he said it, this does ring a bell and I think I remember this discussion before.

I think Meg is also correct in saying this does not apply for free google accounts, but I am using a university google account so this did fully work for me.

I did get some weird prompts on passcodes, but I was able to make it work.

Thanks again!

This appears as a "Known Issue" in Google. https://support.google.com/mail/topic/3394244?rd=1 For now, it is the no. 1 "Top Issue"

Click on I Can't Access My Account in the aforementioned link and follow the procedures for not being able to access account in a non browser app AND the option for getting error messages. It forces you to change passwords once you do the error option. However, following all the procedures, it still failed for me.

This worked for me:

Delete your Gmail account under Settings on your iOS.

Then:

Go to your Gmail account on web and login.

Then open a separate tab and type in myaccount.google.com (most people don't know about this page)

It should open with your Account Settings (i.e. not gmail account settings, but general google account settings.)

Scroll down your profile and under the 'Signing In' tab, go to the last option 'Access for less secure Apps'

Toggle the switch 'Turn On'

(for some reason, the gmail account deems iOS Mail as a low security app, and blocks the password so it reports it comes up with failure to log in but on mine, it was just slow to send in emails)

Now go back to your iOS and install Gmail again.

It should set up as expected and download and function as you expect.

NOW, go back to myaccount.com.au and TURN OFF the Access for less secure Apps.

Your iOS should not pick up on this again as it hasn't for me.

If all goes to plan as detailed, you can exit the myaccount.com.au and get back to business.

If not, toggle again to 'Turn On' with your gmail account remaining on iOS. Once it is turned on, go to your phone and turn your Mail, Contacts etc to off, then turn back on and check your mail again to see if it works as normal. If so, then go back and TURN OFF the Access for less secure Apps and exit.

I don't know of other solutions that has worked otherwise.

I changed my app specific password for one of my gmail accounts and was shocked to see there was no password to fill in on my iphone 6.

What I did that worked after reading on here.

I powered off the phone - doubt that made any difference.

deleted the account

went to add a google account and signed in my with gmail password not the app specific one and if worked.

oh well there goes app specific password protection for my gmail account. I wonder if its apples way of making gmail less secure because it always seems like I get spammed on my email accounts that do not have app specific passwords when checking email at an airport / public wifi.

OK, i've just tried something, which seems to have worked so far.

I had the problem that I had deleted my gmail account on my iPhone 5s (running iOS 8.3) under >'Mail, Contacts, Calendars', and when I went to reload it as a new account, could not get the phone to accept the Google Authenticator passcode (it at first asked for my gmail account and password, didn't accept app specific password etc.).

Anyway, I kinda gave up, and went into my google account on my MacBook and turned two-step authentication off. Tried adding gmail as an account again to my iPhone and it accepted my username and password. Access to Mail, Calendar etc all working a-ok.

Then I went back to my google account and turned 2-step authentication back on. It warned me that some apps would no longer work without app-specific passwords. Went out of Mail on my phone and back in again - still working!

Hope this helps some of you folk.

Someone was trying to guess my password so Google suggested I change it so I did. Then mail on my iPhone stopped because it had the wrong password.

Based upon a suggestion here, I went via Safari to Google.com and signed in with the new password. Safari asked me if I wanted to save the password and I said yes. I then stopped Mail (via the multi-tasking screen) and started it back up. It had the new password and connected.

Hope this helps others.
