GMAIL Accounts unusable after 8.3 update!

I have lost access to my GMAIL accounts after upgrading to IOS 8.3 !

IOS Settings does not provide me a way to enter a new application password for the account - there is NO PASSWORD box displayed anywhere in the GMAIL configuration. So I tried deleting the account and re-adding it but i get stuck in an endless loop of two-step confirmation and it "appears" to add the account (prompts me for which features - mail, notes, calendar, etc.) but then when all is said and done NO GMAIL ACCOUNT shows up in my list of accounts. WTH?

And trying to navigate Apple's support screens has become an exercise in frustration and futility!

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this mess?

I also had experienced this issue. You need to power off the iPad or iPhone.

To Power off this is to hold the On/Off button and slide the power off. Wait for a couple of seconds when it's done loading.

Another way is to remove your Email account from settings and add it back on settings.

Most bizarre. This started happening with my Gmail mail account on my iPhone 5s last Thursday 11th June. Read this thread today, having found time to sort it, and am pleased so say it's now resolved. Strangely enough, my iPad wasn't affected and my husband's mail was fine too, even though I also check that through the Mail app. So, deleted my Gmail account, powered down the phone, left it off for about 15 mins. Powered back up, left it alone, on home Wi-Fi, for about half an hour then re added the Gmail account. All fine and new messages downloaded immediately. Thanks for the posts in this forum.

The password is kept in the iCloud key chain. On iOS, the only way to get access to it is via Safari.

If you notice, via the Mail app in IOS for the Google account, there is no way to change the password once the account is set up. (iOS 8.3)

Its one of those "make it simpler" tricks that Apple does that sometimes bits you in the butt.

In my case, (see a few posts back), I changed my Google password and needed to figure out how to set it properly for iOS mail to resume working. It can't be done via any interface associated with "Mail". I had to do it via the path I described above. There are other posts in this thread that echo this as well. I didn't discover it but someone else posted on this thread.

If you are afraid of deleting stuff from the keychain then it might work to go to gmail in Safari (or anywhere in Google) and log in. That will update the keychain and that should affect mail.

I had to stop mail and restart it for the change to take affect.

Good luck

I was not positive my Google calendar works so I added an entry via the web site, waited a bit, and then it shows up on my iPhone's calendar app.

On the iPhone, using Safari, try going to the Google calender page and just log in and see if that "fixes" the issue. What I'm hoping / expecting is Safari will ask to save the password and at that point, it will work. You may need to stop the calendar app on the iPhone and restart it (via the multitasking screen).

I'm curious about your results so please update with what you find out.

Another thing to try (worked for me today): TURN OFF CELLULAR DATA / LTE. (In Settings->Cellular).

You'll need to have a WiFi connection, of course. Then add the gmail account.

I deleted my gmail account as it was giving me the error

“The mail server 'gmail.com' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings.”

and that's what the Apple support doc [Gmail account cannot get or send email in iOS - Apple Support] said to do.... but I could NOT re-add the account.

I am a university Google Apps user, so password verification is done via a second site, but even with correct password the account would not persist (get past "accept", and then next screen is grey for mail/contacts/notes/calendar sync, and then fails back to add account page)

I did notice that the error occurs only when on cellular, and not when I'm at work on wifi, so I turned off the cell modem, and that worked.

Go figure...

Easy steps

On the iOS device, touch Settings.

Touch Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Touch Add Account.

Touch Exchange. Note: iOS 4.0+ allows multiple Exchange™ accounts. However, if you're on a device that doesn't let you add a second account, you can use IMAP to sync Gmail, CalDAV to sync Google Calendar, and CardDAV to sync contacts.

Enter the full Google Apps email address and a password and touch Next.

In the Server field, enter m.google.com.

Leave the Domain field blank.

In the Username field, enter the full Google Apps email address.

The password should already be in the Password field, if not, enter it again and touch Next Notes about passwords:

Select the Google services you want to sync, such as Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, and touch Save. To receive and respond to meeting requests on your device, you need to turn on Mail and Calendar here and New events in the Google Calendar settings. See Customize Mail, Calendar, and Contact settings for more information.

Starting synchronization: If Push is enabled on your device, synchronization will begin automatically. You can also open the Mail, Calendar, or Contacts app and wait a few seconds to start synchronization. If you recently signed up for Google Apps for Work, Education, or Government, it can take up to 24 hours before synchronization occurs.
