ios 8.3 update, now phone can't connect to car stereo

Brand new problem this morning after ios 8.3 update.

iPhone 5c, connects via proprietary cable to my 2010 Hyundai Sonata. Never had issues, even with the 30-pin:Lightning adapter. Now every time I switch stereo to the 'aux' input (i.e., my iPhone) while phone is plugged in I get "loading error." Tried with Downcast app, Music app, restarting phone after ios update, nothing works thus far

Guess it wasn't worth saving the time on typing in passwords for free apps....

Thanks for posting! I've tried this with mixed results.

Attempt 1: I got the Audible app to load on the third attempt after 2 connection errors.

Attempt 2: I got errors more than 10 times in a row and gave up.

Attempt 3: Worked on the first try!

So it's still an issue. Very strange that it works properly every once in a while. The good news is that I can use my car's Bluetooth audio to play Audible books. The negative is that I have to turn the car's stereo to the maximum audio level to be able to hear it.

I'll post again if my situation changes.

So I am seeing this issue as well and am glad to see a discussion on it. I have an iPod Touch 5G it connects to the lightning to 30-pin then to the proprietary Hyundai cable. I've always had occasional issues with loading errors and usually either rebooting the iPod or just a quick disconnect and reconnect solve it. I recently for the upgrade to 8.1 fully reset the iPod to factory settings since I only use it for music nowadays so it even got a clean install recently.

Over the weekend brought the iPod into the house to sync a few new songs. Got prompted for the 8.3 upgrade and updated. It takes tens of tries to get the iPod to come up now. I finally get the iPod to connect then all it takes is a phone call then I have to start all over trying to get the iPod to connect. Not sure what changed but it has pretty much made my iPod useless in the car.

The reason is new feature in IOS 8.3 :

Wireless CarPlay

If you utilize CarPlay in a compatible car, you'll love this new feature. With iOS 8.3 and compatible CarPlay systems, you can now use CarPlay from your device without the need to plug your device into your car. Consult your particular CarPlay system to find out how to enable this feature.

Apple changed API for car stereo and remove some function from API.

Another data point acquired after a week or so with this (2010 Kia Sorento, stock stereo):

If the stereo is in (say) FM and I just connect the iPhone 5, I get a Loading Error.

If the phone is not connected and I switch to Aux (MP3 Play), the stereo displays ||||Connected|||| (presumably to the proprietary cable/Apple 30-pin-to-Ligntning adapter). If I now connect the phone, everything works fine. Car off/car on and I'm still connected.

The trick seems to be putting the stereo in the mode where it is expecting a connection to a device rather than having it in a non-device mode (FM) and connecting the phone or device.

When it started behaving like this (actually it was me who changed my normal order of operation) I had that weird feeling that the system was somehow learning or adapting. But I am sure that's not the case. Maybe Apple pushed a tiny mini-update while I wasn't watching.

I will experiment with my old iPod Touch and Nano and see if it works without the Apple 30-pin adapter.

2011 Sonata no nav system here with the "Initialization Error" message. I've reverted back to the regular stereo cable as it has been driving me mental. I'd love to use the regular cable with the 30 pin to lightning adapter. Switching songs on the iPhone itself (6plus here) is not as hands free as using the controls on the steering wheel. I will attempt to put the car into Aux mode before connecting the phone and see what happens, maybe it will work for me too!

I was referring to a 3.5mm stereo cable plugged directly into the AUX port on the car dash, sorry!

Unrelated note:

I wish my car was the model were they allowed you to use a regular iPhone usb cable to connect but unfortunately the 2011 is the last year they made you use the proprietary Hyundai cable that couples USB and 3.5mm into one cable.

If I try to use a regular iPhone usb cable instead the phone goes nuts trying to connect over and over again.

Yes, you can plug this stereo cable (I think that's what it is actually called. It's a cable with a 3.5mm end on either side - one plugs into the headphone port on the iPhone, and the other end plugs into the AUX hole on the car itself - which should be beside the USB port).

Doing it this way will give you a reliable alternative to using proprietary cable from Hyundai. There are a few downsides:

  • You cannot see the song title/information on your car stereo
  • You can only change songs on the iPhone itself
  • You need to control the volume on the iPhone/iPod (set it to a reasonably high level) and then use the car volume knob to turn it down or up from there (I tend to put the iPhone nearly at the maximum, and then use the car volume control to turn it down, or even up from that point)
  • Your phone will not charge using this method (you need the proprietary cable for that which won't plug in because you're using that little AUX jack (make sure your device is plenty charged before hand!)
  • If you're listening to a song and turn off the car stereo (using the power button) the song on the iPhone/iPod will continue to play (you just won't hear it). To stop playback on the device, either unplug the stereo cable plugged into your headphone port, or press pause on the iPhone/iPod screen.

I hope this information is useful and helps out - it is by no means a solution though... I wan't the old functionality back.

So here is an update for you guys that needs further testing but I'll keep you in the loop. I took advantage of being in the industry and got a coworker to set me up on his developer account to install iOS 8.4 Beta 1. I haven't had a ton of time to test being at the office but I did take my iPod to the car and hooked it up and on the first try it connected to my car instantly. I unplugged and replugged a few times and it seemed to be working better than ever from a connection standpoint.

However, I saw a new problem. I quickly wanted to play a track off a playlist to test. I went to the playlist and picked a track and it jumped to the first track in the list. Picked a different track and it still played the first track on the list. So possibly fixed a problem and created a new one. It's also possible the iPod was still rebuilding databases from the update. I literally unplugged from the update and went straight to my car. I will tinker with it more this evening when I leave for the day and will fill you guys in.

Somewhat hopeful 😁
