ios 8.3 update, now phone can't connect to car stereo

Brand new problem this morning after ios 8.3 update.

iPhone 5c, connects via proprietary cable to my 2010 Hyundai Sonata. Never had issues, even with the 30-pin:Lightning adapter. Now every time I switch stereo to the 'aux' input (i.e., my iPhone) while phone is plugged in I get "loading error." Tried with Downcast app, Music app, restarting phone after ios update, nothing works thus far

Guess it wasn't worth saving the time on typing in passwords for free apps....

Sounds interesting, I'm sure there will be a resolution at some point - I just wish it was now 🙂

For a while I was wondering if my car itself was on the fritz - like maybe the headunit was starting to go, or maybe the cable I was using was starting to fail. It was the consistency of the failure after 8.3 that changed my thinking and the discovery of this thread that made it much clearer. I'm relieved to know that it's not a "crappy Hyundai/Kia" issue but rather a software bug that can be resolved.

I have found the solution!!

I have the same problem when I try to connect my (newly purchased, to replace the one stolen from my car) iPod touch to My audio system in my Hyundai Santa Fe. My iPod touch is a 5TH Generation version with iOS 8.3. I called Apple support and was referred to an Senior iOS Advisor. The only solution that she could come up with was to suggest that my Lightning adaptor was defective. She sent me a replacement for my Lightning adaptor, and also a 30 pin to Lightning cord. I tried swapping the new adaptor with the old one. That did not solve the problem. I sent the Senior Advisor an email stating as much. It seems that she places the blame on Hyundai.

Text of her reply follows:

Hey Carl,

XXXXX from apple here.

I’ve been looking into your case and I have found that I do not have any solutions for your issue.

This is something that Hyundai is going to have to resolve because the cords I’ve sent to you was my last option.

I’ve talked to a collegue of mine about the situation who also has a hyundai and she states hers will not work either.

If I come across some type of solution or hear of anything that may help you I will contact you.

Have a wonderful day!

I started to think about when all of this wonkiness started. I recall that my old iPod (4th Gen) worked fine. That was before the iOS 7 update.

So the solution to the problem is to buy a refurbished iPod touch (4th Generation).

That should work fine because it will not accept anything later that iOS 6.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

This is something Hyundai is going to have to resolve!? This is coming from a Senior iOS advisor? Pretty sure Hyundai didn't sneak into my garage in the middle of the night and change my car's radio firmware. This problem started with iOS 8.3. It doesn't exist in 8.4 beta 1. This is clearly and blatantly Apples fault tampering with the API for the new carplay features that require a brand new car to use. 😠

Sorry so update to my findings. iOS 8.4 Beta 1 does solve the connection issue for sure but I have made some interesting observations.

-If everything is hooked up when the car starts there is a possibility the iPod Touch will show that the attached accessory is not supported and the only way to clear the message and connect is a quick unplug and reinsert.

-Selecting a specific track in a playlist no longer works. This is a new problem I have never encountered before. The iPod will always jump to the first song in the playlist no matter what track you pick. If you manually start skipping tracks backwards or forwards it works fine. I have a big playlist with Amazon purchases and usually I would jump to the new tracks towards the end of the list. Now I have to just play the first track and hammer the back button until I am where I want to be.

I was waiting for someone else to reply before I did - Stromos you and I are on the same page but you said it much nicer.

If the logic of the "Senior iOS Advisor" was correct that would mean our iPhone's and iPod's were functioning properly prior to 8.3 purely by accident.

Anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed for iOS 8.4 as this surely isn't a Hyundai problem (let alone many of the other car makes and models that are also experiencing plenty of issues relating to this version of iOS).

Apple seems to be messing up with older API's for the new car play. Even if we think buying a brand new after market system with car play, still it is a big problem. Carplay does not support google maps and apple maps is nowhere near google maps except some places of USA. And navigation is something that most of people want if they fully integrate/connect iPhone to car infotainment system.

Does apple understand that car manufacturers cannot come up with so speedy software updates with each iOS update?

Update!

The last three attempts to connect to my Audible app have been successful every time. I primarily changed my iPhone prep and the order in which I connect to apps. I can't promise success, but I have received ZERO Connection Errors over the last couple days when loading up the Audible app.

My Setup: Hyundai Elantra using OEM cable + Lightning adapter cable connecting to an iPhone 5s with iOS 8.3

Prep: Before connecting the phone, I go into multitasking (double-Home button) and I close down all apps (upward swipe) that can potentially use audio. These include but are not limited to Apple Music, Audible, Amazon Music, Youtube, etc.

Connecting in the car:

--Start the car (OEM + Lightning cable already connected)

--Verify the stereo is set to XM or FM radio (both have worked)

--On the iPhone, get to the home screen and then connect the cable

--At this point, the phone connects and music starts playing from my main playlist. It always plays the first song alphabetically in the playlist. (This connection used to cause a Connection Error most of the time)

--With the music playing, open the Audible app and select an audiobook. The music fades out and the audiobook starts playing. Success! (Sometimes the playback would pause the first time. Toggling the play/pause button or using the 30 second reverse clears up the issue)

Overall my process hasn't changed much. The only thing that is different is closing down all of the audio-related apps (including Audible) before connecting the cable.

Hopefully this helps...good luck!

I found this would also work until the point that I received a phone call, or turned off the stereo for a moment. Upon pressing the power button on the stereo to turn it back on, I get "Initialize Error" on the stereo display. Fidgeting around while driving to get it working again isn't something that I will keep doing.

Apr 23, 2015 1:29 AM in response to Mark Entel

Exactly, the issue is when you're driving and listening to music. Now you get a call, you talk and after disconnection of call, you get a loading error. It encourages to do steps like disconnect phone, kill apps, reconnect phone and check if you got an error again or it started working. If it works, you need to move to the playlist/song you were listening earlier. This all process makes you prone to meet an accident. Apple, please don't put lives of your users in danger like this.

Agreed - this is why I have stopped messing around with it and resorted to using the old fashioned stereo audio cable from the headphone jack to the AUX port on the dash.

It's not pretty and it has a few drawbacks but it works - and you know what? I've noticed that Siri works a lot better too. For instance, if I was plugged in the old way (using the lightning connector) and pressed the dictation/microphone button to respond to a text message Siri would start listening for a moment and then cancel and continue playing my music. I could never make her listen to me completely. Now, when I press the button, the music pauses and Siri (or whatever) will listen until I've finished speaking without ever interrupting me. This was very cool and a lot less frustrating. To me, it actually makes the phone more useful while driving instead of it just being a fancy music player - I could get used to this to be honest.

I just need to be sure my phone is charged before getting on the road (it always is anyway - it's the 6 plus and has a giant battery). I could also just get one of those cigarette adapter USB converter plugs and plug my iPhone cable into that and charge my phone. Sure, it's two wires connected to the phone at once but at least I won't run out of juice!

After installing IOS8.3 I got a "Loading Error" more than 9 times out of 10 when connecting my IPhone 6 to my 2012 Elantra . I am using the Hyundai IPhone 4 cable and an Apple 30pin to lightning adapter. I reverted back to IOS8.2 and it works every time.

If you are having problems with IOS8.3, I suggest installing IOS8.2 sooner than later. I found that Apple stops "signing" (allowing) older versions of their operating systems after the new version has been released for an undisclosed amount of time, making it impossible to revert back. Version 8.2 is the earliest version which can currently be loaded. I did this by:

1) Download an ipsw file of the software (there are many sites, I used www.ipsw.me) , save it to you hard drive (if you use Internet Explorer it will change the extension to zip so either use Firefox or rename it to .ipsw).

2) Open ITunes, attach iPhone, choose device Summary page, holding the Shift key click on Update (to the left of Restore Phone), browse to the ipsw file, OK

3) After about 5 minutes the software will update and you will have to set up the phone again.

No problems when connecting the phone more than 20 times.

The 4th Gen iPod Touch arrived the other day with iOS 7 installed. It's been working like a charm!

I start the Sante Fe and connect the iPod with the proprietary cable and it loads.

I connect the iPod to my audio system and then start the car. The iPod loads with no problem.

I drive to the store, shut my Santa Fe off, go into the store, come back, start the car. The iPod plays!

I go to work. Finish my day. Start the vehicle and my podcast resumes playing at the point which it left off.

All of this is without any intervention from me.

iOS 7 - it just works. iOS 8 just doesn't!

I found a solution that works great for me.

Keep an audio CD in CD player. Connect your iPhone when cd is playing. It works fine and no loading error.

Now, if you get a call or anything or you switch to FM. If you switch to AUX(iPod) from FM you get loading error. But if you switch to CD, let it play for a few seconds and then press AUX, it loads iPod. No loading error. Also it starts playing from where you left not from first song as in case of killing apps or restarting iPhone.

iPhone 5s

iOS 8.3

Hyundai Verna (I think its known as Accent RB+ sedan)

Success Rate: 90%.

Please check for your cases. For me, it does not seem like a problem for now. Hope it works for everyone.
