Podcast's not downloading

My podcasts on iphone 6 have stopped downloading. All new podcasts are stuck on "preparing to download" but never actually downloading.

Is this a known error?

I may have found another contributing factor. I noticed that my iPhone 6 Plus has been asking me to login to my iTunes account periodically. I didn't make the connection between Podcasts not downloading and these seemingly random requests for my password. I went over to the iTunes store app and saw there were stuck downloads there too. It prompted me to authenticate my password and all was well again. Podcasts working again as I expect.

I'm guessing that turning the phone on and off might reset this authentication and therefore fix the problem by proxy.

This bug in the Apple podcasting app has been around for a few months. I have the same problem with the app on my iphone 6+. Apple has done nothing to fix it; clearly it's not a priority for them. Rather than constantly resetting my phone, which sometimes works and sometimes does not, I stopped using the podcast app in favor of instacast.

I was not able to download anything since I upgraded to iOS 8.4. What actually happened was that the podcasts would download but when the progress circle got full and displayed "Processing," I got error messages. After powering my device (iPhone 6) on and off for a total of maybe 5 times, which did nothing, I resorted to the following steps:

1. Back up my phone on iTunes.

2. Reset my phone (Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings).

3. After the reset process and when my phone turned on, I chose to restore from an iTunes backup (the one I did in step 1).

4. After the restore process, the podcasts are back to normal. One more thing, podcast syncing, which never worked for me, is also working.

I have this problem ... started happening within the last year ... POSSIBLY coincident with my upgrade from IOS7 -> IOS9. Anyway I'm now on IOS 9.2.1 and I still have the problem, and the preceding advice about airplane mode and power-cycling haven't worked for me. From what I can tell elsewhere, IOS 9.3.1 doesn't cure it either.

Is it unique to older devices ? My phone is a 4S.

I am using iOS 9.3 on iPhone 6S and facing same issues with podcast app. Sometimes it won't subscribe saying the link is not available. If that works out randomly, then it won't download the podcast automatically. After going through the forums, I think Apple will not solve this problem so, I guess I need to find an alternative to the Podcast app.
