Mail option is missing from share menu

"Mail" is missing from the share menu. When I go to the Extensions preferences in the System Preferences it is checked buy also grayed out. On Apple.Com it clearly shows in the example that Mail is present in the Share dropdown menu. I verified that my Mail account is correct. I have also tried Apple's instructions on this page: If sharing options and Markup are missing after you install OS X Yosemite - Apple Support. Still nothing works. The Apple Help file even says this:

Share Menu

Select the items that you want in the Share menu, and in the Social widget in Today view in Notification Center.

  • The Share menu is available in several apps, including Safari, Contacts, and the Finder. If an item is selected, but you don’t see it in an app’s Share menu, then you can’t use that item to share in that particular app.
  • Only items that allow posting or messaging can appear in the Social widget.

So, it would seem from this that Mail is not available in Photos? I find that hard to believe. I would be nice to still be able to email a photo directly from the new Photos App. Any other help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The "Mail" share icon will only show if you are using Apple Mail as your default mail client _and_ Apple Mail is set as the "Default Email Reader" in Apple Mail.

Open Apple Mail, and goto preferences, under the general tab, the first selection is "Default Email Reader". If this is set to Gmail, or Outlook, etc, it wont show in the share menu in Photos. The solution is to add your email account to Apple Mail, and change this Default Email Reader selection to Apple Mail. Then, it will show in the share menu in Photos!

This is frustrating to say the least, as many of us don't want to use Apple Mail. After you add your Gmail account to Apple Mail ( or whatever account you actually want to send the email's with when you share photos ) you can configure Apple Mail to automatically send messages, or do them manually if you want to avoid downloading all your Imap emails, etc.

Hope this helps anyone who is wondering why such a basic feature isn't working. Apple, please fix this! 😉

I have the same problem. I cannot email any photos which I use constantly for projects. I've tried everything, nothing works. It's worked for all these years and now it doesn't. Help! My job depends on sending photos of plans and projects. It's so annoying, I hate the way Apple is constantly making changes that upset the end user. I am constantly having to go back and reset things or find a complicated route to the same end. Enough. I'm not sure I will buy another Apple product. It's the same with my iPhone. I have a MacBook Pro version OS Sierra 10.12.6. Please fix this I have wasted countless valuable hours on several occasions only to have nothing help.

Well since you have tired everything then by definition there is no solution available

and as to your useless RANT

I hate the way Apple is constantly making changes that upset the end user.

Apple has made no change to Sierra 10.12.6 for several months so this clearly is not the result of an Apple change

If Share options are missing

The Share menu might not show one or more sharing options—such as Email This Page, AirDrop, or Facebook—or the Markup feature might be missing.

Follow these steps if the issue occured immediately after upgrading to Yosemite or El Capitan.

  1. Open the Terminal app, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  2. Type this command in Terminal:/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Framework s/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed
  3. Press Return and wait for the Terminal prompt—which ends in $—to reappear. It may take a few minutes.
  4. Quit Terminal.

You should now see the expected Share User uploaded file and Markup features. If not, go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click Extensions, and make sure that the Markup and sharing features are turned on in the Actions and Share Menu sections.

While this isn't a fix but rather a work-around to the actual problem - this article on Macworld explains how to continue using iPhoto (which is still in your applications folder even after the Photos upgrade).

Just make sure to take note that if you continue using iPhoto, you will need to export and then import any changes you make to files later on down the road when Photos finally works properly.

Thanks for the tip - much appreciated!!!

Unfortunately, not only can't you use Outlook for Mac seamlessly, you also aren't able to easily open images in Photoshop to make more advanced edits.

However, with that being said, I like that the workaround you shared will allow me to use one image library. Dragging raw images from Photos to the desktop then editing them in Photoshop, while a pain, is better than having to manage multiple image libraries.

When I installed the latest version of Outlook and Yosemite I did get the Outlook option in the Share menu - Hooray I exclaimed .. but something has broken it recently with an update. Like you all, I do not see the mail option in the Share menu at all and it is grayed in the extensions section.

If you make MAIL the default client the MAIL option appears in the Share menu. Make Outlook the default and its gone again completely.

So Apple, come on! .. Why do such childish things .... let users choose what they want to see in the Share menu option!

Hello CSound1

Thanks for that, but what you see and what we see appears to be different .. please understand that I used to be able to see the Outlook icon and Outlook label when I right clicked on a file and went to the Share menu option.

Now I see this:

User uploaded file

If I click on More... to activate more options then I see the image following - you can clearly see Outlook Mail is activated, is greyed out for some reason and should be present in the Share menu - IT IS NOT ... this is the problem!

User uploaded file

Why can Apple not sort this out .. it’s a pain.

BTW works if you make Apple Mail the default mail client - so the problem appears to be an Apple one.

Sort it Apple!
