Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Hi there, I'm the one who posted the video mentioned above.

Everything started right after upgrading to 10.10.3 (I never had installed any of the public betas before that - went straight into the official 10.10.3 release).

Even with the 10.10.3 Supplemental Update released on Apr 16th, the issue still occurs.

As mentioned by Panagiotis above, as soon as I move a window over them, they're gone. They may re-appear after 30 minutes, or 30 hours.

Clear SMC / NVRAM has been performed as well with no success I'm afraid.

I've also been experiencing random reboots and app crashes (ie Chrome, Firefox, Mail.app etc), all of which started right after the 10.10.3 update. My Mac was performing flawlessly since they I first purchased it.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but i'm having the same problem like you.

The only thing i haven't yet observed are the flickering pixels.

My mac reboots at random times and while no specific apps are running.

(Last time it was Spotify, Brackets, Chrome, Safari, Cyberduck)

Is the Mac getting very hot?

Is the fan working?

I still have a 2010 MacBook Pro that began restarting everynow and then (but it's not 10.10.3 related) and I understood it need to get some maintenance.

Can the other users experiencing cold restarts confirm that theirs Macs are not getting too hot?

Maybe there can be a bug in the software that handles the fan, just my two cents.

That panic log may indicate a hardware problem And may be independent of the others.

When you say you did a "clean" install, what does that entail. You could ask ten people and get about ten different answers to that question.

Does it restart or pixellate in Safe Mode? OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support

If it doesn't, the problems may be caused by the Logitech drivers or Little Snitch.

My "clean install" plan was to boot in recovery mode, format the SSD, enter my Apple ID so that the latest Yosemite build gets downloaded and then install the bare minimum apps for daily workflow. Zero preferences or apps transferred from other Macs. For the record, I had cold restarts before installing Little Snitch and the Logitech drivers.

Regarding the Save Mode... I tried it and I didn't get any cold restarts. But considering that cold restarts are so random, how can this help? I mean, I could be working for a day and not get a single kernel panic and then get 3-4 within 5 minutes.

As for the whole thing being a hardware issue... that would be one huge coincidence, considering that I'm not the only one complaining and that everything started with the installation of 10.10.3.

I've got the same Mini short of the SSD and I don't get any cold restarts (or any problems at all, for that matter).

Small Update

I did another format and this time I didn't re-download OS X from Apple, instead I used a USB stick that I had created with OS X 10.10.2. Once the installation completed I installed all of my software as before but I didn't upgrade to 10.10.3! So far it's been one full day of regular work with zero restarts, kernel panics or even these strange flickering pixels!

If this continues, I think it's safe to say that 10.10.3 created all the above issues.

More likely, your incompatible software caused the issues. Again, same Mini, no issues. Only thing different is your software and SSD.

I have the same issue and thought it was a hardware issue but after doing the following things seemed to have calmed down. I havent had time yet to check things out completely but will in the next day or two.

I had to make an OS 10.10.3 Start Up Disk and reboot using that. I checked the disk for any damage then restored from Time Machine Back up. Seems to be working better.

Since upgrading to Mac OSX 10.10.3 supplemental update, I had two kernal panics-- 1 from after playing diablo 3, both my monitors turn black and bam! -- kernel panic and the second one was when i was using safari and reading a wikipedia article.

Today i got flashing bars on my screen just like George T but mines are black-- which started since the Mac OS X 10.10.3 supplemental update-- never happened before.
