Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

Update

I installed the 10.10.3 update once again along with all my software, expect Little Snitch and Logitech's drivers (as Eric suggests) and so far it's been a day with zero issues. I don't really care about Little Snitch right now, but my mouse feels crippled without Logitech's drivers. 😟 But I'm not willing to take the risk and do another format. I guess it's a lot easier to buy a new mouse or wait for another update or something.

I'm experiencing EXACTLY the same problem. I have flashing bars on my screen just like yours, sometimes one bar, sometimes exactly like your video. If I drag a window over these pixels or click a menu over them, the problem is gone.

Various kernel panic, the reason varies...

I tried a fresh install 10.10.2 on a spare HD and the problems gone.. Then a update to 10.10.3 and BAM! Video problems and kernel panics back again.

Apple support asked me today to sent my Macbook pro 13 mid 2012 (despite model, is brand new) to repair with an Apple authorized center.

This not a hardware issue or third part software issue: this is a faulty operational system, poor tested, and users like us are paying by their rush.

I will return to 10.10.2 until this problems disappear. Or Apple confirm this is a general faulty hardware, because it's identical in many equipments.

what video card do you have on your MacBook?

I'm facing the problem on a Mac Mini with an "Intel HD Graphics 4000" card but never have seen the issue on a MacBook Air with an "Intel HD Graphics 5000".

Can anybody else facing this problem please add a reply with the name of the video card they are using?

If not sure how to find the video card name open the  > About This Mac menu and select Displays

Is it possible that Apple did not properly tested the 10.10.3 update on the Intel 4000?

I quite agree with you ... maybe the problem is in the compatibility of the video drivers with the specific model of video card, since my model is also Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Intel HD Graphics 4000 here as well. The MacBook Pro with the Intel Iris Pro on the other hand, works wonderfully.

After a few days the problem got worse and worse and now my iMac is completely useless. It will not start up from a CD, Thumb Drive or any other means. It has now become a huge paper weight.

My Mac mini runs on an Intel HD Graphics 4000 as well and I can confirm that it's been more than a week now with zero issues! The exact steps that I toke to end up with this "successful" installation are:

I had OS X 10.10.2 on a USB stick and I used it to boot my mac, format its SSD and install OS X.
Installed all my necessary software, except Little Snitch and Logitech's drivers for my mouse and keyboard.
Once everything was in place I downloaded the 10.10.3 Combo update and installed it.
There was still one update on the App Store labeled "OS X Yosemite Recovery Update". Installed that as well.

It's been more than a week now and so far I haven't noticed any pixel flickering or any other weird thing. Cold restarts are gone as well... or so it seems. Hope this helps.

I'm happy for you too... But I tried to reinstall 10.10.3 from scratch and the problems returned. (until my MacBook was on 10.10.2 was fine).

I've finally finished reinstall my OSX 10.10.2 (after formatted my Corsair 240 SSD), reinstalled all software (Little Snitch included)...

No more kernel panic, no more blinking bars or artifacts on my screens (LCD or external).

I use my macbook to work .. I don't want a capricious OS wich I can not trust. Really.

If this is hardware problem, and Apple force a hardware upgrade, so It will suffer the consequences, because I bought my MacBook recently (1 month ago).

I stil think this is a bad video driver, or something related.

Please, guys, if there is any news, let us know.

I just installed an update for Default Folder X:

Sorry, 10 minutes after my reply the flickering came back...

I'm also think that the issue is with the Intel 4000 driver, tomorrow will try to use only the MacBook Air (Intel 5000) to see if I can reproduce the problem with two external monitors connected.

And yes, I also use Macs for my job and its getting really annoying to work – hopefully someone at Apple is supervising this thread and will let us know something.

The kernel panics seemed to be gone, now that i reset the SMC and PRAM.

But the flickering bars still appear at random and these bars are not visible if I have a window open, they reside on the background desktop wallpaper.

For Mac mini owners-- do you guys use HDMI connection for your LCD/LED monitor? That in itself seem to cause kernel panics and screen problems, but switching to DVI or VGA got rid of problems for me and made my Mac mini more stable.

I do not have the flickering video, but with 10.10.3 on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011), 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, & Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB, I can tell you that it is a video issue, whether driver or hardware.

After installing 10.10.3 I started getting crashes from being logged in to a log-in screen if you have anything attached to the HDMI port. I appears to occur when the screen saver kicks in or any other operation "blanks" the screen. For example I can be playing a movie in VLC through the HDMI port to a Sony KDL55HX857 tv. As long a it is playing all is well. When the movie stops, and the screen tries to go to screen saver or blank out the OS crashes.

If I just pull the HDMI plug out of the Mac, touching nothing else, all is fine .... no crash when the screen saver starts or blanks the screen. So it is obvious to me that the crash is caused by a combination of the HDMI system software and/or the video card/software and its ability to go from one state to another.

I suspect that if folks that are getting system crashes are ask, many have some sort of HDMI device continuously hooked up.

My solution, remember to unplug the HDMI cable immediately when not actually having something "running" in the foreground on the Mac.

BTW, I have an older MacBook Pro 15 that runs continously doing all sorts of stuff, remote connection and in and out of blank screen with no issues ...... and it is running 10.10.3 and NO HDMI connection.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.
