Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

That's 10.11.6.

I keep getting a line of flickering pixels where the bottom of the menu bar meets the window. This is 1-pixel high and it's always in the left 2/3 of the screen. I haven't noticed it every day, but frequently.

I've been unable to capture it because as soon as I click anything in the menu bar or use a capture shortcut it stops.

This is very different from the small flickering rectangles I used to see places in the window before receiving my new 'puter.

Aug 30, 2016 1:02 PM in response to OregonRebel

This is the first time in 10.11.6. I get a straight horizontal line of rectangles across the MBP LCD monitor. I've also been unable to capture it. However, I've checked the Console.app and I found this:

30/08/16 21:46:42,076 MPlayerX[858]: Error: this application, or a library it uses, has passed an invalid numeric value (NaN, or not-a-number) to CoreGraphics API and this value is being ignored. Please fix this problem.

30/08/16 21:51:56,000 kernel[0]: IOGraphics flags 0x43

It was just the time that the issue happened.

The error of MPlayerX to CoreGraphics API was reproduced every time I quitted the app.

I updated the MPlayerX to the latest version and the problem is solved.

Aug 30, 2016 5:26 PM in response to OregonRebel

If you're referring to the one in which the Console log showed a MPlayerX issue, I would highly recommend downloading Malwarebytes (free) online and running it. If that doesn't find anything, download AppCleaner (also free), and drag/drop MPlayerX into the program and put it in the Trash. MPlayerX is known as a "Potentially Unwanted Program." It typically comes installed with a fake Adobe Flash updater or something similar. Most people don't realize they installed it. I've seen it cause piles of bizarre issues.

Aug 31, 2016 5:50 AM in response to -ixen-

Doubtful that Mplayer is causing the issue, but you only see the rectangles when it's when it's playing? Have you used another video player? I usually use VLC, but also have Elmedia Playerinstalled and have been trying out Playr, but its feature set is too limited; Hated Kodi!

The problem does sound like a logic board - same issue I had. So the real issue may be why are you burning through boards? The fact that it "passed all the tests" means nothing, so did mine.

The morons at AppleDoesn'tCare kept arguing with me and refusing to believe my two fan controller apps that were showing temps in excess of 200° even though I sent a screenshot showing 217° at the CPU! They kept insisting the apps were incorrect, but the developers assured me they use the same method of reading sensors as the OS.

User uploaded file

Then they screwed up all the repair jobs they scheduled with our local Mac store (not an Apple store) - I'd pick up my computer and nothing had been done. Once because they said they didn't show that a repair order had been created. Then because the repair order didn't cover the logic board (even though Apple said they were ordering the logic board replaced - no questions asked - it wouldn't even be tested, just replaced). Lastly because the Apple rep who created the repair order had reused the order number from the previous repair order and it had expired.

After months of hassle and many, many hours spent on the phone and emailing various Apple departments and personal, I finally got hold of someone above Customer Relations who exchanged my defective machine for a new one via FedEx.

With the new machine the daily kernel panics stopped immediately, the boxy glitches were gone and temps returned to normal. I'd also been having trouble with USB devices suddenly disconnecting, and that was no longer a problem either.

User uploaded file

If you're machine is under warranty you may have to fight hard to get the board replaced, but don't give up! Don't let them deter you by saying the tests were normal so everything is A-OK.

I recommend TG Pro as a fan controller. Or Macs Fan Control if you want a free one.

Aug 31, 2016 6:51 AM in response to OregonRebel

I don't have problems with temps. I've checked them for a long time and the they are normal.

The apple service provider replaced my logic board but they told me that they do so because of my extensive reports (vids & photos of the issue). They refuse to replace the second logic board or the machine. They deny that there is something faulty in the hardware. I exchange a lot of mails with the apple developers in bug report. They know the issue but for some reason they play with graphics drivers. As I said, 10.11.4 and 10.11.5 were very stable versions. I hadn't any issue. However, they made modifications again in 10.11.6. check this About the security content of OS X El Capitan v10.11.6 and Security Update 2016-004 - Apple Support
