Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

This will be the 4th time that my MBP returns from the service with no result.

The Apple Authorized Service, here in Greece, is called iSystem. I mention the name of the company to inform all the greek Apple customers about their services and policy.

The ‘experts’ in iSystem was from the first moment unable to detect the problem. I sent them reports, logs, photos and videos but they refuse to accept that the MBP produces those graphics glitches. At the 2nd appointment they decided to replace my logic board although the MBP had passed all the hardware tests, but with no final result. The graphics glitches was never gone.

So I sent it back once more (3rd time) and then they started to say some peculiar theories: they try to connect the graphics problem with my home power supply, my external disk drive, my external monitors, my installed applications or something else that nobody knows…!! In sort they imply that somehow I was responsible for the issue.

I took the MBP back from the service and I made a clean installation of the 10.11.2. One hour later the flickering was back having only the default Apple applications on my system. I captured the video https://vimeo.com/149924044

I sent the MBP back with this video which actually proves that the problem is caused by the hardware or the OS X or both.

Once again after one month of ‘tests’ they were unable to see the problem while my hardware (once again) is just fine.

An ‘expert’ told me that if the graphics glitches were real they should be shown in a log file in my system, but he was unable to show me the exact location or the name of the file.

Ha!! One of their strong arguments is that I am the first that mentions the problem so OS X is not responsible for this.

In sort, they imply that I’m crazy and the issue is a product of my (our) mind.

I’m very very annoyed with their policy and I think that we should do something with those people.

Do you remember the specifications of your last mini?

Did you have the intel HD graphics 4000?

I went round and round with Apple over my issues too.

My computer was in the shop three times and was returned twice without any repairs having been made, despite AppleCare telling me they submitted a work order to have the logic board replaced no questions asked - just do it - even though hardware tests showed nothing wrong.

The first time the shop said there was no sign of a work order actually being created, so they didn't fix anything.

The second time a work order was created, but they'd used the number from the first work order and it had expired!

After months of fighting over the issue, Apple replaced my computer with a newer model with slightly faster speed but only half the CPU cores, thus my new computer is even slower than the last.

Since I don't know how the Apple warranty works in other countries, I can't provide any helpful suggestions other than to say keep fighting with them until you're satisfied.

I continue to have similar issues even after taking it to the Apple store and getting the logic board replaced on my Macbook Pro Mid-2012 with the Intel-4000 video. I think it is a video driver issue myself, and have reported it to Apple. The only fix I have currently is to use Windows 7 on my Lacbook Pro (installed using bootcamp). When I run Windows 7 on the same machine I don't have any issues, only when I boot into Mac OS X. Seems to point to a Mac OS software issue based on my testing.

Once again the MBP is back from the service. It passes all the hardware tests, and nobody there can see the flickering artefacts.

I tried a clean installation of 10.11.3 but the artefacts are back. The service asked me to check my connected devices... I don't know what to say.

I can report that I solved my ongoing issues with cold restart. After testing some software combination, it was the Soundflower kext probably conflicting with the most recent Yosemite security update. After a week without that kext, and I have not seen cold restarts.

So, while security updates can seem harmless, they can introduce compatibily issues with software working at low level, like the extensions.

The flickering appears in my external monitor every 3-5 days with 10.11.3. I had also 2 log offs (2 crashes). Todaythe flickering artifact appeared in my MacBook's LCD. My system was connected to an external monitor via Apple adapter.

I checked the messages in Console and I found that the time of the issue was the same with the message "kernel: IOGraphics flags 0x43"

Do you have any idea what this message means?

just wanna let you know that my issues have resolved. One year after the issues first occurred I again went to the Apple Store lately to have my machine checked as the crashes got worse - I couldn't even power up the machine anymore, only after some minutes of heavily trying out all keys on the device the machine sprang back to life. This time they indeed found the issue since the hardware check program said in bright red letters 'TEST FAILED!'. So I got my early 2013 MacBookPro's logic board replaced and the crashes are gone. Repair was done within hours.

I only wonder as to why the crashes began after I installed Yosemite... Mavericks didn't provoke these issues... Hm, strange.

Michael, these are good news.

I don't have any crashes except two logoffs in 10.11.3. My major problem, after 4 successful hardware checks and one logic board replacement, is these flickering artifacts that appear out of nowhere when the MacBook Pro (mid-2012) is plugged into my external screen.

The problem is that nobody is in a position to tell me what causes these graphics glitches. I know that Apple engineers check my reports. Once they 've asked me to unplug the external monitor and check if this fixes the issue. This solution sounds quite odd to me since I miss what the Mini DisplayPort in my MacBook is designed for....

I hope that the 10.11.4 will fix the problem

The cold restarts and flickering issues have slowed down greatly as of late, but there's a new issue happening now, which has happened every other week for me over the past three or so months: the system will randomly log out. I think it might be happening due to a memory leak, but I'm not 100% sure.

I forgot about the flickering pixel boxes - haven't seen them in a couple months or so.

I'm still running Flash, so it doesn't seem as though that was the problem. Still gotta have Flash for a lot of sites.

Now what I see almost daily is some odd flickering where the top of a window meets the menu bar.

It's not a continuous flickering line all the way across, but a broken line of about 3-4 segments. It's 1 pixel high and maybe 2-3" long sections.

As soon as I press a key or click anything, it stops, so I've been unable to capture it - I don't have a cell or camera to use.

Hello. I have been silent for a while, since the issue reduced greatly somewhere around March. The only thing I still observe from time to time is a crashing Firefox when I open flash videos. Just now however I realized something very strange. When I press (relatively hard) below my MacBook Pro's (non-retina 15" mid2012) keyboard the flickering occurs right away and disappears when pressure is released. If this is done repeatedly the MBP will crash. Not sure what is going on but I feel like this could be one more indication that the Intel 4000 GPU Macs suffer from some kind of hardware design flaw.

the flickering artifact is back in 10.11.16. It appears in my LCD of the Mac Book Pro while I minimized the chrome and the firefox from my external monitor!!!!!
