Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

No Fusion Drive but I did install SSD my self instate of the internal hdd but the problem not with the drive because there is others don't have any fusion drive or ssd and still have the restart and flicking problems! the problem mostly related with the intel HD4000 driver the restarting problem was gone for me after El Capitan till the last update 10.11.1 still have some flickering but very rare.

Nov 21, 2015 12:24 PM in response to Panagiotis Tsamoudakis

Update. Same problem here on Mac mini late 2012 since Mac OS X 10.10.3 to 10.10.5 Yosemite so far.

No problem with OS X 10.10.2 installed in 31st January 2015. OS X 10.10.3 was installed on 9th April 2015.

Model: Macmini6,2

Intel Core i7, 2,6 GHz, 4 cores & 8 threads.

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM.

Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB.

1TB Fusion Drive (128 GB SSD).

Kernel panic shows usually while browsing the web with Safari.

It seems that the crash is related to Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB with OS X 10.10.3 to OS X 10.10.5 so far.

I took back my MBP 13" mid 2012 from the authorized service. The MBP passed all the tests, however they replaced the logicboard because they read my extensive bug report with a lot of photos and videos showing the issue. After one week with the new logicboard the flickering artifacts are back 😠. All of them appeared while I was browsing with Chrome.

Dec 8, 2015 3:56 AM in response to -ixen-

This is very strange and I think that there are two possibilities:

a) the old and new logic boards are somehow faulty despite the successful hardware tests

b) the Intel HD Graphics 4000 drivers after the 10.10.2 update have several unresolved bugs.

Does anyone know what kind of graphics issues apple developers try to resolve in the new update 10.11.2?

Dec 14, 2015 3:10 AM in response to MrCamaleo

In relation to the posts by MrCamaleo (page 6) and Duey182 (page 26):

In my experience, Adobe Flash may be the culprit of the Mac mini (late 2012) random kernel panics with automatic reboots. Not a single crash after uninstalling it on 29th November 2015 (15 days ago). I uninstalled simply by removing (and rebooting):

Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins:

Flash Player.plugin

flashplayer.xpt

I will report here should it arise again.

Dec 18, 2015 2:51 AM in response to YouCanCallMeMo

I sent my MacBook Pro 13" (mid-12 with the replaced logic board) back to the authorized service. The engineer says "again" that it passes all the tests and he can't see the flickering no matter what. He tested the Mac with the El Capitan 10.11.1. He also said that he tests a lot of macs that have the Intel HD graphics 4000 but none with our flickering problem or cold restarts.

Do you all have any issues using the new OS X update of El Capitan 10.11.2 ?

Please any feedback will be helpful

Dec 23, 2015 12:32 AM in response to YouCanCallMeMo

Yes, do you see any restarts or flickerings with 10.11.2?

Since my MBP is in the way back form the service, I don't have any experience with the latest update and I can't find any new post that complaints about flickering artifacts with 10.11.2. I found only these 2 new threads describing the same problem but they work on past versions of OS X.

Just before your post apple developers sent me a message asking to let them know whether the issue is resolved.

I guess that they are working on it or they already fix it in the current version.

One more thing:

I asked developers if the following displaypolicyd log is normal.

u>52603393 ERROR: AGDC suppport not present in system

u>52603463 ERROR: Policy engine instance init failed

they said that "displaypolicyd log simply states system is not managed by AGDC and does not lead to any additional information about this panic report"

Dec 23, 2015 8:05 AM in response to -ixen-

I did not install the 10.11.2 update yet I am on 10.11.1 I am super stable there I had no restarts for long time since El Capitan and very rare flickering, I did install the 10.11.2 public test in early stage and I experienced cold restart after long time stable on the 10.11.1 ! I inform them and they said that it's duplicated issue with them and they working on it so I restore back into 10.11.1 and I am there since then, I am worry to start any updates right now because I have so much work to accomplish at the moment, that's why I am asking if someone has tested the new updates!

Dec 29, 2015 11:20 AM in response to YouCanCallMeMo

No cold restarts but the flickering is still here in 10.11.2.
It appeared while I was browsing in Safari, just after a clean installation of the 10.11.2. The only app that I had installed in my system was dropbox. This is a clear evidence that the problem is on the OS X.

User uploaded file

Just one more thing, please check the USB in System Report

In later versions of OS X the default USB device tree/ports was:

▪ USB 3.0 Hi-speed Bus

▪ USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus

and now (after the replacment of the logic board) I can see only

▪ USB 2.0 Bus

▪ USB 2.0 Bus

is this normal?

Either your video has been removed or it's only available to FB members.

When I follow the link I get this message:

Someone else mentioned flashing "bars."

It sounds like what I was seeing on my last Mac mini, but without seeing it I can't tell.

I'd get a line of small rectangles flashing, usually in the same place each time.

I was also running 10.10.3

Apple replaced it with a new one and I haven't seen it again (although I now occasionally have a single line of pixels flickering where the menu bar meets the top of the window).

Pretty sure my old mini had a toasted logic board - besides the random flashing pixel rectangles it also had daily kernel panics, overheated and had USB problems.

The new computer came with El Cap and I DO NOT LIKE IT!

Can't wait for Half Dome to be released! 👿

Jan 19, 2016 10:57 AM in response to Panagiotis Tsamoudakis

I have the same issue, with a Mac mini Mid-2011, Yosemite, an HD3000 graphic card. Sometimes it works, some other times it has a kernel panic when the Mac (or just the display) is going to sleep. I'm nearly sure it started with Yosemite (not one of the earlier versions, since I'm not an early adopter).

The hardware test says the hardware is fine. The kext list is clean, according to EtreCheck. This is the type of kernel panic report I get:

Those rectangles look like the same type of glitch I had on my last mini.

I got the mini and a new monitor at the same time.

Ended up returning the brand new monitor to Amazon because Apple denied it was the computer and Dell has no monitor support and couldn't say if it was their monitor or not. Got an identical monitor as a replacement and began seeing the same glitches.

Last month I got a brand new mini and those glitches are gone.

Pretty sure mine had logic board issues because there were several other problems as well, including USB 3.0 which you mentioned.

Hope yours isn't caused by the board!

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.
