Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

eIt sounds like you may be having a different issue. The blinking seems to be a common factor to other replies, as well kernel panics.

I can't speak for others in this thread, but I don't have any plugged into HDMI.

Not sure on the blinking issue, as my video cards are older 3000s, and maybe they are not having an issue that causes blinking. Of the folks with blinking and crashes, would be interesting to hear if one or both issues go away if the HDMI is unplugged ...... or even if they are having issues with no HDMI connected.

BTW the crash I get is caused by a kernel panic. Tried to get someone at Apple to look at is since it is repeatable, and is one initiating action specific. No reply unless you want to buy paid support. So I will continue to unplug the HDMI in my "old" MacBook Pro till the computer dies, and get a newer MacBook Pro that, at least from commentary, does not have the crash issue.

I do not have anything plugged in the HDMI connector.

However I have a second Mac Mini connected to the TV via HDMI and NO issues at all after the 10.10.3 upgrade.

I'm not using HDMI adapter... I'm using DVI adapter, but even with it disconnected, the blinking bars show up in main LCD of my Macbook Pro.

There're many videos posted (you can see mine too) in this forum, reunited bellow, that show the problem is exactly the same, after updating to 10.10.3.

Unfortunately, it seems to be more a bad or poor tested graphics driver, affecting HD 4000 chipset.

Kernel panics are another problem after 10.10.3.

I'm now at 10.10.2 and so far, no more of them, Neither blinking bars.

@Ian Isted - Your device also has a HD4000 Graphics?

My video card is even more basic, it is a Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB. Have not had any flashing video problems, just crashes from having HDMI hooked up when the system goes to screen saver or black screen.

I cannot agree more that Apple needs to do something. If Yosemite won't work on the older Macs, in many cases, then they need to figure out the problem or tell us, do not run OS X 10 on the old machines. The problem with our Mac machines is that they are so good they run for years, unlike cheap PC machines. I did not get too upset when they went from a Motorola cpu to Intel, as we have much more capable machines as a result even if we needed "new" machines. But if we are "killed" by OS improvements, then really, Apple needs to rethink their support policy.

While I am not a Microsoft fan, they do have the "new" OS testing idea figured out. Release the "new" OS, as beta, tell everyone it is beta and get the bugs figured out BEFORE releasing it to us who depend on our computers for real work. They still have bugs after their final release, but nothing as broad and affecting as many as is happening with this video and user log off crash .... so Apple, get with the problem and fix it.

we all agree that its most probably an issue with the Intel 4000 GPU or its driver.

Personally I'm not willing to move back to Microsoft, nor to move back to Ubuntu.

It's five years that I own and use an Intel Mac (used to have Motorola Macs in 1984~2000) at least 8-10 hours per day and – before Yosemite in general and now the last update – I really do not have any complain.

But now...

What shall we do?

Waiting someone from Apple to notice the issue and wait for a fix?

Contact Apple support? What about if the support plan is expired? Should we pay to get a bug fixed?

Completely in accord with your comments on going back to M$ for an OS or Linux. Until Yosemite I too had no issues. What grinds my behind, is that Apple wants to charge me to fix something that is obviously a bug in the Yosemite OS not my hardware. They need to setup a service line for anyone that upgrades/dates their OS to the latest, and that should be free for several months after the update install. Apple should be collecting all the crash logs they can and analysing them for what is causing the crash/kernel panic/or what ever is the issue against the hardware generations.

From comments on this forum and others, it appears that the issue is with the 4000 series graphic cards, and older .... mine is a 3000. How do we get Apple to respond/do something, good question. Maybe a few hundred complaining at an annual stockholders meeting, or a petition on the internet to get folks with the problem to sign their name requesting Apple to fix Yosemite ..... public peer pressure is the only thing that will work I do believe. Make it very public, make it loud and someone will pay attention.

well there is a number of users that are having this problem and someone was also able to demonstrate that going back to 10.10.2 the problem disappears.

So if your system runs well lucky you! – but this does not mean that nobody have a problem.

Maybe the problem arises on a more complex configuration – maybe the 3000/4000 cards are only one of the "ingredients" that mixed together create the issue.

For example the issue might arise only on systems with 16Mb RAM (like my system) and does not arise on systems with 8Gb RAM...

How much RAM do you have?

And you Conepatus?

We need to find out more things in common between systems that are showing the problem, but this is not easy to do on this kind of forum.

Should I create a Google Drive shared spreadsheet where all enter our hardware specifications?

It could help to see what there is in common on systems showing the problem.

But we have also to figure out the apps installed as someone figured out that the flickering can be caused by Logitech drivers and an app called Little Snitch.

And this can be more difficult to find out...

Wel i haw this issues to with an Macbook Pro mid 2012 non Retina. Intel HD 4000

But i only get the flickering pixels if my external Display is connected and if i use both Displays.

when i close the Macbook and used only the external Display, no flickering for days.

And if i disconnect the external Display no flickering at all. Only in dual Display mode.

The Display is connected with an Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter from Apple.

And that, without any App running.

I'm the person who have downgraded the OSX to 10.10.2.

I was tired with so many problems and lockups with 10.10.3, and they were affecting my work too.

I agree with you.. a complex combination could be a reason of so much trouble... maybe a compilation like a spreadsheet can help us to ask Apple (internally or public way) to help us with this problems that initiate with 10.10.3.

It's very annoying to hear by phone from a guy from Apple support this is a hardware problem, even with people complaining of identical problems in a number of equipments.

Could I ask for all to post here a complete description of equipment and software like mine, bellow?

Could you build the spreadsheet with this data?
