Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(1.4)[70E2B65E-A91A-3522-A1A0-79FD63EABB4C]@0xfffff f7f82ecb000->0xffffff7f82ed3fff

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

Hey there,

Little update after a few days: After uninstalling iStat Menus my Mac mini has been crash free and without any flickering for 3 days now (to be honest, I've just worked 3-4 hours with it the last days - so: Trying not to be too happy until the next days). 😁

Yesterday I installed and checked my replacement RAM from Corsair - and I will continue to see what time shows.

Did you upgrade ISTAT MENUS to version 5 Maverick and Yosemite compatible - and did you check for any current fixes. Just looked up the launch article on Mac-Addict web site - and saw the conversation about having to pay for the upgrade to version 5. Running this type of program is a double edged sword - consolidates what is going on - but also requires memory to do so - thereby reducing RAM for other activity.

Yup, running the current v5.1 🙂

(I've already informed the devs of iStat about this thread and that there "could/might be problem with the SystemUIServer" etc. - so that at least they can keep an eye on it)

If the flickering starts again after re-instal keep an eye on how long until - and what is running. As Yosemite compresses active applications in memory before it starts killing inactive applications in RAM to make more room for active ones before resorting to VM -- there is an extremely rare chance it could be a compression-decompression problem where an instruction does not decompress exactly as it compressed

Update....

So, I did a complete format of my HD (highest settings) which took 18 hours for a 1TB drive. With nothing else connected to my Mac and no iCloud account, I downloaded (WiFi) and installed a fresh version of Yosemite. Install went fine. Of course, blank white screen once completed. But, I was able to get in via Safe Boot (held down Shift key during startup). Once I got in....there are personal files in my Documents folder!?!?!?! How in the world are there still any files on the HD from before after waiting 18 hours for the system do perform a supposedly DOD approved super-duper-format? What else is possibly still on my HD that may be affecting by bootstrap? Virus? Malware?

The flickering problem no longer appears. But, under normal boot-up, I can't get past the white screen. I can only get in via Safe Boot mode which is horribly slow.

Ideas anyone?

Hi MacAddict,

I'm not going to be able to answer your question - but your comment raised another question for me.

If you download a fresh version of Yosemite wouldn't you be downloading Yosemite 10.10.3? I think we are finding out that 10.10.3 is the problem. So even with your "fresh" install you'll still end up with the bug filled build of 10.10.3?

I am starting to think that the problem is 10.10.3 and what needs to be done is to restore from a backup with Yosemite 10.10.2 (or earlier).

So that's what I tried to do this weekend. However - I found that when trying to recover from a Time Machine backup with 10.10.2 the machine wouldn't boot up afterward. It just keep booting up to a half filled progress bar (with Apple logo) then restarting again to the same position in an endless loop.

Anyone have ideas on how I correctly restore to 10.10.2?

Much appreciated.

May 20, 2015 11:41 AM in response to cdolson

cdolson,

You are correct, it would be best if I could get 10.10.2 or earlier. Actually, I believe it was the 10.10.3 supplemental patch here OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Supplemental Update 1.0 that caused the problem for me because everything worked fine until a couple of weeks ago. When I spoke with the folks at Apple, they confirmed that the latest release of the Yosemite OS available from the App Store is bundled with all updates released to date and they don't offer previous versions. I've been searching the Web and have not found a way yet to get a previous version of the OS without going back to Mavericks (note, I mentioned my failure to perform regular backups).

I installed Mavericks a few days back just to confirm that it's not a hardware issue, and that went fine. But, I couldn't install the latest version of other applications because they are no longer compatible with OS X 10.9. So I've been trying to find a way to make Yosemite work for me with no success.

Aslo, I spoke too soon this morning...flickering problem has returned even in Safe Boot mode 😟

May 20, 2015 11:47 AM in response to MacAddict571

Hi MacAddict,

You don't need to do this highest settings format, because this is a security measure, i.e., to clean your data to sell your macbook.

This type of format should have done a total clean in your HD.. I don't have a answer why you still have personal files in your folders, without have seen the process.

I have a suggestion for you: with your mac connect with a cable to your router (will be fast), boot in recovery mode.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314

Then, after OSX loading, enter in Disk Utility, select your disk and do a repartition. After repartition, do a verify disk - repair if necessary.

Install a fresh install again. This error cannot be happening.. If it persists, should be a hardware problem.

... and cdolson is right: the version you are downloading es already 10.10.3.

Best Regards.

Hi MacAddict571,

I'm now at 10.10.2 and my macbook now is solid like a rock.

Fortunately, I kept the original 10.10 dmg installation, so I could do a bootable USB to reinstall it.

So, after the reinstall, I did apply the 10.10.2 combo update, and my macbook pro have no more kernel panics or flickering bars.

I did some research on the net, and I couldn't find how to download again 10.10 version.

You will need this version if you want to back to 10.10.2.

Best Regards.

FINALLY!

I have been checking this thread: Yosemite random Crash - discoveryd_helper[147]: Basic RemoteControl com.apple.discoveryd_helper Starting XPC Server

as I was having discoveryd crashes too, but that was all I could find.

However, the videos, and everyone here's description of what is going on matches my problem EXACTLY.

Here is my story regarding this issue

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 9,2

I installed 10.10.3 the day it was released and the problems began immediately. The supplemental update did not help.

I had a 1TB HDD that I purchased WITH the laptop ORIGINALLY from Apple (was on online only upgrade).

I brought my laptop in 2 weeks ago and the genius thought it was a logic board issue, so it was sent in (still under warranty).

They replaced:

The Logic board

The RAM

The Optical drive

The Display

The Optical drive cable

On top of that, when I got it back, I cloned my hard drive (onto a Samsung 850 evo 1tb) and installed that. Basically all of the hardware is new except for the battery (or is that all of it? I'm not 100% sure but I think it might be).

After 2 days of having the machine back, the video glitches began again. So, it is 10000% software (even though they replaced nearly all my hardware).

Yesterday was 5 days having it back and I had my first Kernal Panic (before that I was just having the black screen and it would restart. When I checked the CrashReporter logs there would be something about discoveryd so that's how I wound up in the other thread).

I read through this entire thread.

I will say that I found these things interesting:

1) I have the Intel 4000 card

2) I use Little Snitch

3) I have a logitech bluetooth mouse I use at home

Ironically, while my computer was sent out, I bought an external display and have only recently been using HDMI/thunderbolt with it, though that apparently has no effect. All of my kernal panics were while I was not home and had been away from the external monitor for some time.

Since this begun, there have been good days and bad days, but I will say that today NOTHING has happened at all, and I can not remember the last time that was the case, if ever. I have no idea if this is a coincidence, but I did delete some plist files late last night. I was reading through the other thread and made some kind of connection - I am doing a coding boot camp at the moment so my brain is a bit spent (and that's also why I sent it out, got a second monitor, etc all very quick).

The plist files I deleted (from library/preferences)were:

com.apple.finder.plist (8 of these)

com.apple.loginwindow.plist

If today was a lark, I plan on booting 10.10.2 from a USB (which I have) this weekend, but like I said - I can not remember a day like today since updating to 10.10.3. Many days I'd just have the video glitch with no crashes, but today was nothing at all. I brought my machine home and have been using my Logitech mouse, LS running, and dual displays with HDMI as well.

I'm under AppleCare until August 12th (the day after I finish my bootcamp), but I have the fact that this has persisted documented and they said I will have until August 18th to bring it in if anything else needs to be changed fixed. I have a friend who works in an Apple Store pointing the Lead Genius in his store to this thread tomorrow.

I really hope we are collectively able to figure this out, or get Apple to do something about it, as it has been terribly frustrating.

I'll be checking in with this thread often about how my machine is running.

Thanks for all the tips so far.

PANIC LOG:

I had 3 kernal panics yesterday - 2 were right in a row

I was only able to get a log for one:

I can report one crash-free week. The first since 10.10.3's supplemental update.

Little Snitch is running, just not the animation of its menu bar item. No other software is running that has an animated menu bar item.

I will wait a little longer and then—adventurous me!—I will re-activate Flash in both Safari and Google Chrome to see if I can rule it out as a course for the crashes.

Same issues, same symtoms (screen artifacts, usually green bars and usually while running Safari) and frequent kernel panics -- only since updating from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3 on my Mac mini (Late 2012) 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU: 4-core, 8 GB RAM.

I've tried ALL of the troubleshooting steps that everyone else has tried here, and now my Mac mini is at the Apple Store having been tested for the last day. Predictably, they found no issues and have wiped my drive and reinstalled Yosemite. I'm thinking that in real-world use, the Mac will exhibit the same issues as before, though I remain hopeful that that will not be the case.

I will report back here once I've got my Mac mini back in regular operation.

Other info:

- Using OEM Mac HDD (not SSD)

- Not using Little Snitch

- Not using iStat

- Using Carbon Copy Cloner

- Using a Samsung monitor via the HDMI port and a Cinema Display via mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter

- Connected via USB to a CyberPower CP1350PFCLCD UPS device

I have panic logs and EtreCheck system reports if anyone is interested in seeing them.
