Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

The theory is: Intel HD 4000 + animated menu bar items + evil secret 10.10.3 supplemental update ingredient makes the Mac prone to crash. (Variant: Intel HD 4000 and an external monitor as the Mac Mini 2012 is mentioned in the majority of the crash reports.)

I will stick to this theory until it is proven wrong just because a) so far the workaround works and b) we don't have anything better coming from Apple.

Note that this theory does not at all say that the combination of these three factors is the only cause for the crashes!

May 21, 2015 9:45 AM in response to Larsen2k4

I really do not believe it's hardware related because Apple exchanged almost every part of my MBA twice (long story) and it didn't help.

I gave the old adapter a new try: Everything is fine.

So yes, I agree. It's a software issue.

I will do clean install with 10.10.4 as soon as it arrives and avoid 10.10.3 in the future.

@Larsen

Since what happened when I uninstalled it I wouldn't if I were you.

May 21, 2015 10:12 AM in response to SnakeMac

This is a long-shot, to say the least... But another menu bar item, this one from Apple, also seems to cause menu bar redraws very frequently: System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Show location icon in menu bar when System Services request your location.

I have it enabled on my Mac mini, which has seen frequent kernel panics running 10.10.3, and disabled on my MBA, also running 10.10.3.

Again, I have not used LS at all, and still experienced frequent panics on my Mini... I do, however, use Chrome browser, which also adds items to the menu bar.

After working for the last month with the crashes happening only every once and a while (and upon opening iTunes) I have a new problem:

Now my Mac Pro (late 2013) crashes each time I try to wake it from sleep! To get it to boot I have to startup in Recovery mode and repair disk permissions.

I was tolerating 10.10.3 and able to work through a whole day without crashing that often. Some days not at all.

But now it's impossible to work -

Anyone have a solution for the crashing while trying to wake?

May 22, 2015 3:19 AM in response to cdolson

There goes my luck... After all these days, I got the next panic - this time right after waking the Mac from sleep (just had it booted up and opened Safari and Mail for a few minutes before putting it into sleep.)

Again I can see the graphics driver included in the backtrace of the panic report and the last loaded kext is the smb-filesystem (has been shown as last loaded several times)...

So I'll send another report to Apple 😐

I really do hope that your suspicion proves true.

Don't get me wrong: I feel sorry for you as I feel sorry for everyone who can not rely on his Mac anymore. But if the menu bar icon of one of Apple's own applications is causing kernel panics they can not blame the crashes on poorly written third party software. Which might lead to a fix.

There are some crash reports mentioning the Macs are crashing right after waking them up from sleep. Your observation would fit into this crashing behaviour as all apps that request the location will certainly do so after waking up. They will also do so when you switch the Mac on, true. But since the starting process takes quite a while (at least on my Mac Mini with an HD) these apps might request the location while the menu bar and its icons are not working yet.

And what would also fit is that I have never experienced crashes right after waking up my Mac. Because I had found the location request indicator in the menu bar distracting and turned it off in the first hours of using Yosemite.

Funnily, just yesterday I had been musing about the menu bar clock that is sort of animated too. The location request indicator did not come to my mind though.

Have you thought of just shutting down for the night? I never leave my mac up and running when not in use - its shut down and start up. Keeps the RAM clean and tidy.

Good thinking about the indicator, but I've checked this and noticed that it was disabled for me already - so the indicator only shows up for the services listed in the main preferences window. Still have had the crashes.

I am on Day 3 of no video glitches and no crashes. Before deleting the plist files I mentioned previously and disabling LittleSnitch in the menu bar, I had video glitches many times daily/crashes nearly every day (and quite a few kernal panics just this past Tuesday before implementing these changes Wednesday morning). I should also mention that I reset the SMC and PRAM Wednesday evening as well.

I don't know if it's complete dumb luck and they just stopped, or if this worked, or if it will eventually come back, but I have been using my computer for 10+ hours a day (Web Dev boot camp), so I am feeling pretty good about this being the magic bullet actually.

Has anyone else tried deleting .plist files in User_Name/Library/Preferences (specifically the ones I mentioned), or testing if they get the same glitches/crashes with different users on their machine?

By the way, I am still running LS in the background, still hooking up to an external monitor via Thunderbolt -> HDMI and still using a Logitech Bluetooth Mouse.

Will certainly let anyone know if my problems return, but I am also curious to know if this might help anyone else.

I'm having the same issue with 10.10.3 with restarts. Thread here: iTunes crashes Yosemite 10.10.3 to black screen

I'm running a Mac Pro (Late 2013) with 1TB SSD and 2 AMD D700 Firepro.

My issue is similar that it happens with different software (I can regularly trigger it by opening iTunes). My Mac freezes the cursor and completely stops responding and then cold reboots after about 10 seconds and a black screen.

I'm going to try to roll back to 10.10.2 this weekend to see if that helps.

It does seem to be a hardware issue. Depending on the type of hardware you have. SSD might be a common hardware theme with those of us who have the crashing.

@cdolson: The problems you are having are very different from what most people are experiencing here. Also you would be the only Mac Pro user afaik. Most people suffer totally random kernel panics and strange graphics glitches. I wouldn't be surprised if your problem is described better in another thread.

Short update from my side: No panics in three weeks now??? The blinking bars appear very seldomly now. However, I have kind of a flashing screen showing weird noise for a millisecond sometimes when some windows are redrawn, e. g. when I move or switch windows.

LittleSnitchand iStat are still active and in the Menubar. I wish we knew what exactly causes this problem. None of the theories holds so far. Only thing that is clear is the 10.10.3 and Intel 4000 GPU. And most often (but not always) LittleSnitch users are affected.

May 22, 2015 10:38 PM in response to Old Archibald Yates

COLORED animated Menu Bar Items, thatsway problems with Little Snitch, iStatMenu, but not with ShareMouse, because it has an animated Menu bar Item. And its not only a theory, removing the colored Menue Bar item and no Square Flickering on Mac Mini with Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Look at: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/152038/prevent-redraw-of-menu-bar-icons -yosemite (this Link was posted some days ago in this thread), I inform Obdev.at (Little Snitch, they look for an Workarround, till then remove the NetStatus Monitor Menu Bar Item). And its a Problem of 10.10, not only 10.10.3 allthrough under 10.10.3 affected more people. And not at first from the graphic supplemental update from 10.10.3 (as other useres wrote), You can find similar bug reports for 10.10.1 ...

May 22, 2015 10:48 PM in response to cdolson

I had both problems, the restart problem and the flickering square problem, the first I solved on the first day myself without the help of the Community: I look for old, outdated and incompatible kext Files and other old and obsolete system files, remove them, install 10.10.3 again, make a SMC and PRAM Reset, starting in Secure mode, and the restarts ends. btw: If you remove old and obsolte system files (in Library and User Library), the Mac is quickly again.

The second problem I solved with help of this Article: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/152038/prevent-redraw-of-menu-bar-icons -yosemite

I remove all colored menu bar items and now no Flickering. And its a software problem. Hope Apple will fixing it with 10.10.4

Interesting. In fact most - but not all of my menubar items are black&white. And I use the black Menubar. I will test what happens when I turn on the color in LittleSnitch and iStat. However, for me the kernel panics started first with 10.10.3. Before the screen froze sometimes but I am pretty sure this was due to GPU switching.

Have you sent feedback to apple - along with always sending crash reports? Problem with fixing software problems of the flickering type - or crash type - is that the programmer has to know how to trigger the crash in order to fix it. If you have not sent the reports - look in Console logs for crash reports - sometimes they do identify the program that crashed.

My concern about compression/decompression of RAM - causing the crash or flickering - has to do with a rare - compressed over modem EDI transmission from a retailer experience -- where after many thousands of transmissions - one dataset had a spot that compressed into End of transmission/hang up the phone -- so wondering if within the compressed memory something is compressing into end of set.
