Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

Ever since the Yosemite 10.10.3 Supplemental Update 1, my iMac has been rather useless. It boots into a blank white screen after the apple logo and loading bar disappear. I can get in via Safe Mode, but that's slow and the screen is pixilated. Through much research, I've tried all of the tricks provided by users around the Net. I've spent 40+ hours trying a multitude of options provided by both Apple and various 'experts' on the Net. Because I have a backup of my files on an external drive, I decided to resort to extremes.

I only had an OS backup from Maverick, so I went back to that. But, there are incompatibility issues with the old OS and 3rd party software makers whose latest versions are not always backward compatible. Finally, realizing these tricks are fruitless, I repartitioned the 1TB drive and did a clean install from a bootable USB stick containing the latest OS X download from the App Store. After a successful installation, I am experiencing the same issues.

I got in through Safe Boot, and ran EtreCheck to find that the demon 'com.apple.ucupdate.plist' is failing. After searching the Net, I found many other owners experiencing the same technical issues as myself are also seeing this demon failing. Coincidence? I'm not sure, but I would like to know what this demon does and it's importance to the boot process. Any ideas?

I ran EtreCheck on my MacBook Air and this demon is not failing....of course, the laptop works fine with the latest Yosemite patches. Further leading me to believe there is a connection between the demon and my iMac issues.

I have a late 2009 iMac 27" (Mac 10.1) with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 8GB Ram, ATI Radeon HD 4850 VRAM 512MB. I have not installed any additional software since the partition/reinstall.

What a nightmare. However, this thread is mostly about a very particular issue with OSX 10.10.3 and seems different to yours. We are trying to investigate and isolate an issue where Macs with an Intel 4000 GPU, i.e. mostly Mac minis and MacBook Pros, have random kernel panics and random flickering bars on the screen. I think I read about your boot problems in different threads before.

I just came across this thread after I added my 2ct at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6612843. But let me include a comment on the videos glitches this time.

I experienced issues when I updated from the latest Mavericks to Yosemite, 10.10.3.

Suddenly I got kernel panics. The first one I got right after the machine was running for a couple minutes when the Yosemite-update completed. I had no other application running besides Finder at this time.

I also searched the web since the kernel panics re-occurred. For the past week I was having like 4..5 system crashes in various time intervals.

I was made aware of some to Yosemite incompatible kernel extensions. So I looked up the non-Apple ones and downloaded the respective updates there. Only one driver lacked an explicit Yosemite-update. After fixing that I didn't have crashes anymore (for the past two days of heavy system load). But I'll wait until the end of the week until I'm gonna call myself lucky.

For the video glitches that others mention, I have been having them since the very beginning (I think I started with Mountain Lion). I got / get this 'static' pixels rectangle in web content when switching back and forth between applications that require the nVidia graphics subsystem and Safari. Reloading the web page resolves this for me. So this flicker effect might not be Yosemite 10.10.3 related. I also kept getting the entire screen full of static pixels when I woke up the MacBook from a longer time of leaving it in sleep state. Only two times (or three times at most) I had to forcibly shut down the computer at this 'static' pixel screen when it couldn't recover by itself (holding the power key pressed for more than 4 seconds). But I even got this before Yosemite.

My hardware:

- MacBookPro, Mid 2013

- 15" Retina Display

- 768GB SSD

- 16GB RAM

- intel HD 4000 graphics card

- nVidia GT650M (if I'm not too much mistaken)

- not using any external monitors or displays

- no external keyboard, mouse or trackpad

Hopefully that doesn't kill any of the promising theories...

In this thread the most of us are having video problems "after" Yosemite 10.10.3 update...

Most of us never had the problems like kernel panics, blinking bar or artifacts until this update.

I think your video problem is hardware related.

thanks for the info. And, yes, indeed, according to my HW-serial-# my MacBookPro seems to be affected. And I didn't do a PRAM nor a SMC reset (yet).

I didn't know about that hardware problem before I found this thread. As a former Windows user I might have simply tolerated such a glitch in the video representation as things like this does happen there every now and then.

Hopefully I can get this fixed until the program runs eventually out and for a reasonable price.

Boom & Boom (always crashes twice). After almost 6 weeks of panic free operation Yosemite crashed again 😟

This time it was a quite conspicuous behavior however: I opened a site with flash videos embedded and suddenly - boom.

Apple just released the next Public Beta of 10.10.4 - I just upgraded again and will give it a try 🙂

Maybe this could be a little hope: Apple switched back to the "good old mDNSResponder" with this new Beta of 10.10.4 - since the new discoveryd caused problems all the time it might also be the culprit of our crash problem... It's just a wild guess, but let's hope the best 🙂

That's interesting. I remember reading an article by Ars Technica where they where wondering why Apple would rewrite such an essential part of OS X from scratch. Especially since mDNSresponder was not too bad after all.

However, I am pretty convinced that our problem is graphics (driver) related. See also my last post. And also the fact that a particular GPU type (Intel HD 4000) is affected, makes me believe this.

Yesterday I tried to reproduce this problem. I made programs use all RAM, CPU and repeatedly reopened the site that caused the crash before at least 30 times. Every time the GPU would switch to nvidia. However no crash.

Yup, still seems to be the most obvious cause. However, if I take a look at my last panic reports, they always list the smb network filesystem as the last loaded kext - might just be coincidence, but I wouldn't completely throw this possibility away. Maybe the graphical flickering issues are just another unrelated bug *wild guessing*... at least I haven't had the flickering for a longer time now.

I had the flickering again a few hours ago - this time I took a little video and sent it to Apple with a complete report and links to the threads - again.

Does anyone have this kernel[0]: Previous shutdown cause: -62? Today I actually saw the grey screen but there is no log in console...this is the only hint I have...

I have had this same issue too! On minute im enjoying youtube or any other application and a bunch of gray lines will go all over the screen saying that there was a Panic report in my diagnostics test. It would completely shut down my computer and screw up with it. I find it very annoying and i want this Kernel trap fixed immediately!
