Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Another panic with the latest 10.10.4 yesterday during the shut down. 😠

I've now installed a little Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 (oh irony...) so I can at least do some basic daily surfing and listening to music until Apple delivers the next update. Getting really tired of this.

Nope, 10.0.4 is currently in public beta state 🙂

But you're right... Sad thing to see Windows running more solid on the same machine (so it obviously is NOT a hardware fault like Apple Care still tries to tell people ).

But to be fair after all those weeks of being frustrated: Until 10.10.3 I didn't have any big problems for years. So I'm still optimistic that Apple will manage this soon. At least with 10.11 in some weeks after the WWDC 😝

According to the test at the Apple Store today my hardware is okay and hence not affected by the faulty logic board. Hmmm...

The crashes keep on coming. I did fix file permissions and removed all kernel extensions (using the providers' uninstall tools). Still crashing...

Update from me again 😝

Still happens with the latest 10.10.4 Public Beta from Tuesday (The usual Flickering on wednesday, kernel panic just an hour ago)... I'm writing another report to Apple now and I have uninstalled Macs Fan Control since it's the only "hardware bound background app" that I still can imagine as a 3rd party cause. We'll see.

Maybe the public beta of v10.11 El Capitan will finally change the game next month.

My MBA crashed/panicked on the 4th, 6th and 8th.

Yesterday I waited and waited...no crash for me on the newest beta, although it would have been time for the next one...😝

Yup, I'm sending them all I've got - including live video from the flickering. Maybe I should also sing and dance to make them fix it faster. 😁

Something very strange: The kernel panic occurs always twice. Usually I get a random crash and after that I will land in Filevault pre-boot authentication screen (full disk encryption). There it will usually crash once more before I can enter my password. Yesterday however, the second crash occured approx. 20 sec. after OS X was loaded again. Do you observe that as well?

I wonder if this hints at a certain type of bug. RAM? VRAM?

Yup, it's the same procedure here almost every time: Panic, reboot, Panic again sometime between a few seconds after login up to several minutes after login - followed by roughly 2-4 days without a problem.

Just installed the new 10.10.4 Public Beta... so: Next round, next hope. 😝

At least it included a firmware upgrade, which changed the boot screen of my 2012 Mac mini from grey to the new black/white. So even if OS X continues to crash, it will do this more elegant now. 😁
